On the 11th November 2007, Remembrance Sunday, the Ministry of Defence stated that 171 British Soldiers had died in Iraq since the beginning of the war in March 2003. A new series of prints by Mark James explores the current attitude towards the war in Iraq focusing on the seemingly irreverent way human lives are being sacrificed and our apparent emotional disengagement from such atrocities.
Another Soldier was originally created as a one off piece for the Action Man 4040 exhibition in May 2006 (www.am4040.com) the original piece sold at auction, but as time has passed the work has become a more potent symbol for the frivolous and disposable way soldiers lives are being used by our government to fight in an unjust war. As the war in Iraq blunders on the stories of horror and tragedy occurring on a daily basis are routinely being glossed over while the latest celebrity tittle-tattle and Big Brother headlines are given front page prominence. The toy soldier lying in his coffin is intended as a stark reminder of our increasingly desensitised attitudes towards the concept of war, its brutal realities and our apparent acceptance of the government and the media’s portrayal of war as a game that is played in some far-off land, with soldiers discarded like broken playthings unrelated to the real and significant, needless loss of human life.
Another Soldier will be an edition of 171 screen prints, each representing a soldier. Taken from one original image, each print varies slightly as the ink dries and fills each screen; the image gradually decaying at each stage in the printing process.
The prints will be for sale with 10% of proceeds going to the Royal British Legion. Printed on 250gsm white Keycolour, B2 (700×500mm) Each print will be signed and numbered.
Available from December 3rd through Scrawl Collective.

The description reads "Misty Pully-Border Stripe Crew Neck Sweater", but this wool sweater by Goodenough is a classicly inspired piece of knitwear reminiscent of 9’s skatewear. Available in Japan now at GDEH Stockists, most likely the likes of ELT, Soph and Figure where this image was found.

November 28, 2007 was the official opening of the Burton Los Angeles store on Melrose. With it Burton adds yet another amazing shop to the growing neighborhood around Hollywood which is quickly becoming one of the major centers of street fashion culture in the world.
The Los Angeles Burton store houses their whole family of Burtons board sports starting with the original snowboard brand but now also brings along Anon, Analog, Gravis and Channel Islands. For the opening event Burton brought together all their athletes, and divided up the shop in to the three section to give each board-sport its own space. The outcome is a shop that merges everything together under one roof. The Surf shop feels like a space that would be welcome near the beach, the skate shop feels like a small classic local store, with the addition to the fact that the whole shop is skate-able including interchangeable grind rails. The snowboard area is built to look like a ski chalet all along with original vintage Burton boards.
For the evening Burton hosted a huge party to welcome everybody in. The music was provided by legendary Dj Muggs who added a great sound track to go along with all the amazing legends from the sports world in the crowed, such as Shaun White, Kelly Slater, Rob Machado and Arto Saari along with many more. On the roof of the building Burton put together a skate ramp that their riders could perform on along with other local pros. Upstairs was also treated with a live performance by Trevor Andrew, Burton snowboarder/vocalist.
Congrats to Burton for throwing a sick event.
