February 6th, 2008 |
Uniqlo is without a doubt the most well put together no branding concept in the world today, from its original concept, to its recent re-invention and introduction to the western world in europe and the states, and all its progress in between. To me, the story of Uniqlo is incredibly interesting and also an outstanding [...]

Pierre Hardy Colorama Sneaker
February 6th, 2008 |
Asa fashion fan, one of my favourite movements of late has been that of looking to the future within design, using obvious futuristic colours and shapes I feel is a big relief within an industry so often caught reinventing the past. These Pierre Hardy sneakers are a great example of this, alongside recent collections from [...]

Singapore Guide
February 6th, 2008 |
The next part of our series of City Guides, Singapore is a growing nation in many ways, not just streetwear where it’s gained o lot of attention lately, but the economy is always thriving and its arts are growing. Thanks to Frank for the coverage. Check out Singapore!
Queensway Shopping Centre
One of Singapore’s mainstays in the sneaker game, the two Limited Editions in Queensway seems to be a bit of a meeting point for shoe and street fans alike. A huge selection including one of Singapore’s only legit SB accounts, lots of quickstrikes, and the usual NB/Adi/Reebok/Puma/Converse fare.
Heeren Shopping Mall
The Limited Edition chain’s flagship Tier0 store, this is located in the Central Orchard Road shopping mall called Heeren. Nice wooden finish on the interior and a great Tier0/SuperTeam33/Quickstrike collection, with a bit of sportswear mixed in. One of Singapore’s main stores and definitely worth the visit.
LEFTFOOT
Far East Plaza, Cineleisure, Holland V + more.
The institution in Singapore that started off the ’sneaker’ culture to speak of in Singapore. They’ve been around for the better part of half a decade and they’re still holding it down. There’s an impressive range of shoes to look at, including a few styles exclusive to them. The original Leftfoot resides in Far East Plaza but there are quite a number of them dotted around town, including Cineleisure, more in FarEast, and Holland Village. They also recently opened their Taipei chapter of their store.
CLUB21
Hilton Orchard Road
Club21 seems to be like the department store for Japanese designers. A huge boutique tucked away in the shopping area inside the Hilton it houses a pretty impressive collection of some of the world’s top shelf designers – Yamamoto, Kuwakubo, Margiela, Watanabe and more. Prices are steep but worth the visit to see it all in one place and if you’re feeling a bit generous. Divided into a men’s and women’s section although it seems the men’s collection far exceeds the women’s.
NO SIGN BOARD SEAFOOD
East Coast Seafood Centre
One of Singapore’s longest standing and most famous Seafood destinations. The chilli crab with the little fried buns (mantou) is a must have, and people (like us) flock to this place from all over the world.
WARPED
Far East Plaza
Singapore’s first consignment store, very flight club-esque. Prices are pretty steep but we managed to find a couple of deals in there. Thanks Ken.
COMME DES GARCONS GUERILLA STORE SINGAPORE
Mount Sophia OLDSCHOOL Complex
It was quite hard to find, but I think that’s the point with the CDG Guerrilla store concept. Located in the amazing design/art hub called OldSchool it is styled with vintage classroom furniture, and aside from the normal Homme Plus and Junya ranges they also have a beautiful selection of photo albums of their other Guerrilla store concepts worldwide.
BLACK CHAMBER
Far East Plaza
A stockist of some of the finest labels coming out of the States, Rogue Status, Huf, Alife, Undefeated, DQM and the list goes on. Located on 14 Scotts Road, Far East Plaza add this as a must visit if in the area.
Cathay Building
A small hole in the wall that houses a few brands from HK and the USA. Stussy, Know1edge, Subcrew caps, and a few other bits and pieces.
GALLERY
Pacific Plaza & Far East Plaza
There seems to be a major link between this store and Singapore customiser/friend SBTG, evident with the amount of imagery of his work and custom pieces displayed in the store. Another large selection of Nike SB, DC, Converse, and more. A lot of teeshirts on offer too, from Futura Laboratories, Obey, Maiden Noir, Kikstyo, Stash, Dave White, Sneakerpimps and more.
BUTTERFACTORY
Memory forbids me to remember exactly where this is but we were taken there on a weekend night at some private function. Pretty cool art based interior where we spotted a few works from Fortress and The London Police, along with local artist Killer Gerbil. A nice spot to hang, and to have a drink or ten.
SURRENDER/AMBUSH
Devonshire Rd (behind Youth Park)
Located all in the same boutique heritage shop on Devonshire Road (behind Cineleisure) is the Surrender/Ambush/Hysteric Glamour store. Beautiful build and you’ll find straight-talking staffers with a true passion for what they represent in store. Top shelf brands like NBHD, HeadPorter, HPP, OriginalFake, DITA, Hysteric Glamour, Visvim, W)Taps, Fenom and others call this building their home. A must visit for the discerning consumer in you.
OLDSCHOOL
Mount Sophia
Although it doesn’t seem like too many people make their way to this complex, OldSchool is an art/design/culture hub that houses a number of galleries, design firms, studios, and more, including the current CDG guerrilla store. There’s an amazing café – "Recess", although the atmosphere probably exceeded the actual cuisine itself. The entire complex is built into the site of an old school, hence the name. Everything is therefore school-themed, from the lavatory signs to the classrooms where all the offices & galleries reside. An amazing concept.
HAJI LANE
Haji Lane (parallel to Arab St)
It’s quite hard to find this street and even harder to explain it to most taxi drivers but Haji Lane is turning into somewhat of a gathering point for independent store owners and small boutique companies. White Room, Know It Nothing, and more showcase a more avant-garde and progressive brand listing including some amazing local design and art talent.
BLANCO PRAWN MEE
Haji Lane
Eat with the local flavour at this prawn mee stand at the start of Haji Lane. Dry or wet, the egg noodles are some of the best I’ve tasted ever. Typical Singaporean dish but recommended by all the locals, so you know it’s good.
MANDARIN CHICKEN RICE @ CHATTERBOX
Meritus Mandarin Hotel, Orchard Rd
Local chicken rice snobs kept telling us that this is the one of the best chicken rice in town. Walk through the Mandarin towards the back of the Lobby, where you’ll find the local restaurant Chatterbox, home of this infamous chicken rice.
Haji Lane
Located in the growing independent design/art hub of Haji Lane, KIN boasts a more mature brand list and definitely has one of the better fit outs we’ve seen here for an independent store in Singapore. The owner is more than happy to shoot the wind about fashion, art, sneakers and whatnot. Great service given the norm here in SG.
KANTONG SPOON LAKSA
Queensway Shopping Centre
A local favourite, this little laksa stand is situated in the middle of an equally small ‘plaza’ in the centre of the ground floor of Queensway Shopping Centre. Known for being eaten without chopsticks, its creamy coconut soup with the laksa is one of a kind. You might have to line-up for a small table but it’s worth the wait.
PRIVE BAR & RESTAURANT
Keppell Bay
Located in a new Marina complex, this bar & restaurant provides relaxing views of the harbour front, private boats and seaside complexes. It really does look like something out of Singapore, service is top notch, and the outdoor area with the marquees is great to kick back and have a few drinks with good friends. Worth the quick trip to get there if you’ve got nothing to do on a certain night.
NEWTON CIRCUS
Newton Circus
The tourist friendly hawker centre, and one of the biggest in town, there’s a mundo selection of everything Singaporean hawker food is known for in one place. The hawkers hawking tables near their stands and their menus gets pretty annoying, but you can tell them to go away like we did. Fried Carrot cake, Char Kuey Teow, Satay, and barbecue seafood is what this place is known for.
