Nike Summer 08 Tech Pack “DAY AND NIGHTâ€
April 1st, 2008 |
NIKE created its Tech Pack collection in order to take something familiar and reinterpret it through our signature innovation process. It’ an evolution: taking iconic pieces from NIKE’s DNA and fusing them with innovative fabrics and design embellishments. Together, Michael Leon and Jarrett Reynolds, the designers behind Tech pack, created the Summer 08 collection by combining cutting edge performance materials and diverse fabrications with sophisticated design techniques and original graphics, and then adapted each garment for everyday use and the culture surrounding sport.
The same philosophy that saw the evolution of the NIKE Windrunner jacket, and includes subtle references to NIKE ACG (All Conditions Gear), was used in the modernization of the humble polo and NIKE tee, allowing for the inclusion of other iconic elements in the Tech Pack collection. For Summer 08, designers Jarrett and Michael are adding cycling-inspired elements to the Tech pack theme. Throughout each piece in the Summer 08 collection, subtle attributes such as 360-degree reflectivity, accessible pockets for quick storage, and packable qualities , easily translate each product from morning to evening.
Graphically, Michael stayed true to the “Day and Night” theme, which is echoed in subtle design allusions to dark city landscapes and the ultimate nighttime creatures – howling coyotes. Materials selected for this collection are at times so minimal that they are transparent (as seen on the Windrunner), yet retain performance properties such as being water repellant and breathable. The silhouettes designed by Jarrett easily move with the wearer throughout the day, such as the packable jacket that folds up and can be hung from a belt loop when the damp morning clears up in the afternoon.
Firefly Packable Jacket
The Firefly Packable Jacket is completely new to the Tech Pack collection for Summer 08. In nature, living things characteristically shed layers as the warmer seasons approach. In a natural day, the mornings begin damp and chilly, and warm up in the afternoons – the need to shed an extra layer is inevitable. The entire Firefly Packable Jacket folds up into it’s own chest pocket – allowing you to shed that extra layer and save it for later. With the fabric weighing in at a mere 38 grams, the result is a signature Tech Pack piece that is diverse, breathable and water repellant.
Firefly Lightweight Bonded Windrunner
“The Windrunner is the most famous icon in NIKE’s sportswear history,” says Jarrett. The Firefly Lightweight Bonded Windrunner takes the same design, however uses a 2.5 layer 93 gram nylon material in the Tech Pack construction and incorporates No Sew zippers strategically bonded onto the garment. True to form, this Windrunner features the classic ribbing at the cuff and waistband with the addition of subtle changes to integrate the ethos of Tech Pack, such as a bike messenger-style pocket on the inside back flap, water resistant zippers and seam sealed black taping rather than stitching for construction.
NIKE Tee’s
Coyote Moon Tee and Firefly Tee Taking the classic cut and sew tee-shirt construction, the NIKE cotton/polyester tee is amped up for Tech Pack by incorporating NIKE Dri-Fit technology into the shirt. The Dri-Fit fabric helps maintain a cool and dry environment during any activity. Taking the silhouette, Michael then created the graphics, adorning the Coyote Moon Tee with a silkscreen image of three photos blended together to create a nighttime cityscape and a coyote howling at the moon. The Firefly Tee features an elongated drop hem favored by cyclists and runners, and 360-degree reflectivity.
Coyote Moon Polo Also a new addition to the collection this summer, NIKE again takes the normal polo silhouette and adds a Tech Pack twist. Taking the single knit pique fabric and incorporating the Dri-Fit combination of 55% cotton/ 45% polyester fabric, the Coyote Moon Polo helps maintain a cool and dry environment. Graphically, the piece is emblazoned with a single coyote paw print and subtle embroidery depicting the various phases of the moon.
