A Decade Of CITY Magazine’s Photo Retrospective

For 10 years now, CITY Magazine created arresting, wholly original images with a multitasking staff you could count on one hand and a office you could fit in your pocket. Full disclosure: 60% of us were members of the team. That’s why the recent announcement that CITY just released a collector’s edition coffee-table book collecting the best of its influential, industry changing visuals has us thinking about our old cubbyhole HQ.

CITY: A Photography Retrospective is 336 pages of eye-popping fashion and luxury goodness featuring ASME-winning spreads by the likes of acclaimed photographers such as Alexander Deutsch, Anthony Cotsifas, Torkil Gudnason, Patricia Heal, Phillip Toledano, and Kenji Toma. Said the book’s editor, and former CITY creative director, Fabrice Frere, “The book for me was about closing a chapter after 10 years at the creative helm of CITY with my mighty entourage—a career haiku of sorts. This is only a small percentage of the award-winning work produced by a tiny team in a tiny office.” Frere is still multitasking in a small office—this time compiling a second edition while entertaining his newborn baby, all on one desk.
