News is breaking today that Levi’s seem to be shutting down their local operations in Japan.  Whilst it seems they aren’t retreating from the Japanese retail market their new global strategy is seeing them shutting their Japanese office and moving any key remaining employees to their Hong Kong base, which will now be their sole office in Asia.

Levi’s Japan has been responsible for some of our favourite denim projects over the last few years, including the collaborations with the likes of Tommy Guerrero, Neighborhood, Krink and of course lines such as Fenom and LVC.   LVC is now mostly being produced in the United States, and designed in Europe and Hong Kong, but it is currently unclear what will be happening with Fenom and the other high profile collabs we have seen come out of Japan.

Levi’s continue their long line of collaborations, if you take note at those relationships that have really stood out, you can’t go past the likes of Junya Watanabe, Damien Hirst, Robert Geller and Hiroshi Fujiwara’s Fenom line, Jean-Paul Gaultier is likely to be added to that short list. The iconic french designer takes his own signature approach to the classic denim items, by using horizontal stripes and bondage detailing. The small capsule collection consists of 2 jackets, denim jeans and shorts.

Levi’s Fenom have created this Western Shirt to accompany the Denim that is part of the Turquoise Package Collection. Following the minimal form of the denim the shirt which comes in light blue and white both feature light blue buttons and the trademark detailing we have come to know from Levi’s Fenom with the logo on the inside of the pocket most notable.

Clot’s much in demand Levis collaboration has seen itself take yet another form, thanks to the surgical prowess of Dr Romanelli. Numerous styles from Edison Chen’s ongoing collaboration with Levis have been used to make a selection of custom made jackets. This example below uses the Levis Fenom X Clot collaboration that saw such massive queues last year. Stay tuned for a release in the coming weeks.

One of the things I like the most about fragment design’s ongoing capsule collection with Levis Japan, Fenom, is the way Hiroshi Fujiwara has been able to reinvent classic items without losing any of the garments integrity. With such high standards himself, and a huge understanding and interesting in authenticity, the Japanese designer/icon has been able to add value to items and give his personal touch without losing any of that craftsmanship of classic shape and feel. This new Western shirt is a good example, the materials keep the shirt true to its background, the cut is the same as that used by Levi’s for some time, and the details added merely add to the feel of the shirt, while at the same time adding some sort of modern touch.

The shirt is available in 2 colourways through Levis Japan’s online store, as well as Fenom stockists around Japan and priced at ￥21,000.

The latest release from Levi’s Fenom sees a move away from denim with two shirts which really epitomize the label. The Metallic DISCO Western Shirt and the Metallic DISCO Flannel Shirt are a continuation of the western theme with the minimal feel more that subsequent. The LEVI’S E-SHOP have them available now.

Levi’s Fenom have come up with another timeless piece with these 505 Rustic Cropped Chino. Most definitely epitomizing the aesthetic which we associate so well with Hiroshi Fujiwara it will be interesting to see how these are received.

Earlier today we previewed Levi’s Fenom creating a women’s line, now for the men the much anticipated shirts. Fenom has released these clean and simple chino shorts with signature side zipper and all the Fenom label detailing. Next to the left pocket bears the encircled lightening and on the back stamps the FragmentDesign. Fenom also added slightly frayed bottoms after the seam to appeal to the worn utility look. The chinos come in four colors, black, khaki, charcoal, and navy. Check e-Levi for purchasing.

This Fall will see Levi’s Fenom debut a women’s collection. The label which is strongly influenced by Hiroshi Fujiwara and designed by Kazuki Kuraishi has already got a huge male following and by the looks of this first release we can expect this women’s collection to be a huge hit. To be honest, I am quite jealous about the wash of the damaged denim, as it is hugely impressive.

Fall/Winter 2009 promises to be another extremely exciting series of work from uniform experiment & Soph by the look of this preview. Perhaps the strongest statement of all from uniform experiment is the Levi’s Fenom denim. While Soph continue to strive from their typically astute aesthetic which has now been the source of great things for more than 10 years. Here is a look at a distinctive plaid shirt and some impressive  knitwear. The Soph collection will be available from this Saturday, while uniform experiment will follow the Saturday after.

With summer at its peak fragment design have created a series of tees entitled “SUMMER OF HPP” for Hea Porter Plus, hence the title. Represting the latest neon works from fragment design and Levi’s Fenom the tees feature an oversized pair of thunder bolts in the usual circle.
