The Tennis Classic has always been one of Hiroshi Fujiwara’s favorite Nike shoes.  In Holiday 2008 he brought in the low-key vintage interpretation; Nike Tennis Classic Pack in suede featured in four different solid colors.  Last summer, Hiroshi worked with Japanese brand uniform experiment (developed by Hiroshi and Hirofumi Kiyonaga from SOPHNET) on two versions of Air Zoom Tennis Classic: white leather and blue suede.

For spring 2010, Hiroshi picked white upper with slightly shiny leather, mixed with gold foil accents on the heel and tongue. As we have seen in previous seasons, the shoe continues to play with subtlety and minimalism.   The Swoosh design trademark is perforated on the side of the shoe, and the fragment design logo, a Hiroshi trademark used only for Nike project collaborations, quietly placed on the back heel.

The Air Zoom Tennis Classic HF will be available at select Nike Sportswear retailers on Jan. 19th.

Levi’s continue their long line of collaborations, if you take note at those relationships that have really stood out, you can’t go past the likes of Junya Watanabe, Damien Hirst, Robert Geller and Hiroshi Fujiwara’s Fenom line, Jean-Paul Gaultier is likely to be added to that short list. The iconic french designer takes his own signature approach to the classic denim items, by using horizontal stripes and bondage detailing. The small capsule collection consists of 2 jackets, denim jeans and shorts.

Since taking over at the helm of Dr. Martens, Andrew Bunney has really turned the brand around, not only through a more directional marketing philosophy, but with new make ups and styles, and probably most importantly through a number of high profile collaborations. The latest to be announced, is a project with Hiroshi Fujiwara and Hirofumi Kiyonaga’s uniform experiment. The brogue boot appears to feature Soph’s signature side zip, we’re looking forward to seeing more, as I’m sure this isn’t the only shoe in the collaboration.

If you have picked up the latest issue of THE NEW ORDER you would have seen a preview of the Neighborhood x fragment design Vintage Custom Works collection. A hugely impressive project which injects new life into the vintage rider jackets from the past. Applying patches bearing both entities names as well as an all new lining to these well damaged jackets defines the collection. While the addition of cotton jackets, zip parkas and tees completes the whole project between Shinsuke Takizawa and Hiroshi Fujiwara.

Here are more signs that we can look forward to a really interesting spring/summer collection of footwear from Nike Sportswear. Adding to the Footscape Motion we have already seen which is a project that includes fragment design, we can have a look at two products that have an indirect influence from fragment design or Hiroshi Fujiwara at least. The first is a high cut version of the All Court we witnessed during the summer of 2009. In addition there is a Woven Boot with a rainbow finish, well associated with the HTM Woven while the addition of the Lunar sole makes for a nice touch. Take a closer look below.

2009 was a big year for menswear, and alot of that rests on the fact that menswear has become a trend within itself. This year saw the rise and rise of authenticity as a philosophy of design, and along with that came the resurgence of numerous heritage brands, not to mention a host of brands sharing the same philosophies of their forefathers. While heritage was the stand out trend amongst menswear through 2009, a selection of brands came to light in their effort to create what could be considered the complete opposite, creating something new for the future, the likes of Damir Doma and Rick Owens managed to reinvent menswear as it’s seen, without in anyway losing its sense of integrity and quality. 2009 was split between what was good about menswear and what is to become. In my opinion one of the stand out years in sometime on a number of different levels, and while we can all sit and find hate in the fact that our favoured staples of workwear garments have become trend driven, the fact is, we can’t possibly complain at what’s become available due to this.

While we have been careful not to rank our Top 10 picks from top to bottom, we have to admit our favouritism toward Adam Kimmel, its been said over and over that the New York based designer is the new Martin Margiela, we hate these sorts of comparison’s but one thing is obvious, the belgian and the young New Yorker share a similar philosophy in creating a timeless wardrobe from top to bottom, a wardrobe that will without doubt be just as wearable today as it is in 10 years.

Uniform Experiment, the collaboration between Sophnet and Hiroshi Fujiwara’s Fragment Design, has been consistently successful in taking men’s staples and making them a bit more special and different.  Their latest release the Winter White pack sees them tackle the most enduring item from everyone’s wardrobe, the white shirt.

By adding a series of white studs to the humble blank canvas of the  button down, they bring a luxury, yet punk rock aesthetic and create three really quite different designs.  The first features studs running half way down the placket to give a formal dress shirt effect, whilst the second recreates the patterns of the typical western shirt.  However, my personal favourite is the most minimal version which only features studs around the cuff and would look amazing poking out the sleeve of a blazer.

BAPE are perhaps the most celebrated of Japanese streetwear labels, but the high profile success of the brand and the lure of the $ has seen them squander their hard earned and fully deserved brand equity on a series of collections aimed squarely at the mainstream.
