Can you tell us a bit about growing up and how it shaped you as an artist?

I grew up in the San Fernando Valley of LA, and became immersed in the visuals of 50s cars and the pop googie architecture that surrounded me and forced me to see the world in this futuristic fantasy inspired way that I love. When the 70s kicked in, and futuristic fantasy gave way to boxy bland, I decided to continue the fantasy
through my art.

Following installations at Emmanuel Perrotin Gallerie in Paris and Deitch Projects in New York, the much talked about STAGES exhibition will open tonight at Art Basel. Nike and LIVESTRONG have worked together with O.H.W.O.W. for the final leg of the tour which features some new names amongst the list of artists. Here is a small preview of Richard Prince’s (THE NEW ORDER issue 1) piece entitled “I’m Not Coming Home” which will be on showcase come the opening on December 4.

With a strong debut in Paris, STAGES launched at Emmanuel Perrotin Gallery with a team of the world’s most accomplished and promising international artists, including Ed Ruscha, Cai-Guo Qiang, Richard Prince, Catherine Opie, KAWS, Eric White, José Parlá, Christopher Wool, Tom Sachs, Dzine, and Rosson Crow. The second part of their journey took place in New York City hosted by Deitch Projects where the team picked up four extra members with new works: the Os Gemeos twins, Futura and Dustin Yellin.

The finale will take place at one of the art world’s biggest global events: Art Basel Miami Beach. To create an even louder voice for the LIVESTRONG message, STAGES calls in Los Angeles based Christian and Rob Clayton, aka the Clayton Brothers, the furious paintings from Erik Parker and the black and white portraiture genius of artist Tomoo Gokita for a high energy show full of talent and spirit. All artwork on display as part of STAGES will be available for purchase with proceeds directly benefiting LIVESTRONG.

Starks are developing in the right direction, having collaborated with Nike and LIVESTRONG recently they have followed this up with a project that includes Timberland. using the classic 3-Eye Handsewn Shoe as the canvas which certainly has a distinctive feel looking at the first teaser. Tom Sachs has been a big supporter of Nike and LIVESTRONG’s STAGES, since it launched in Paris earlier this year, not only creating one of the most talked about pieces of the show, but being on hand at the exhibitions and generally throwing alot of support towards the project. For the iconic artist, this project is close to his heart, not only a close friend of Lance Armstrong’s but also an avid bike rider himself. Nike and LIVESTRONG’s WNW space, will, this Friday, play host to a discussion and demonstration by Sachs looking at Bike Theft, a problem most cyclists experience at some point. The chance to see one of the icons of our time speak is something that can’t be missed.

Reminiscent of previous UNDFTD AF1 collaborations, this time in conjunction with Lance Armstrong’s LIVESTRONG foundation, as part of Nike Sportswear’s continued support of the great cause. As far as I can tell from a scan out of a magazine, this is my favourite Air Force 1 in sometime, not sure whether its that aesthetically its well done, or its my great belief in this cause, either way, with the funds going to LIVESTRONG, its a must get. “The pack was developed for the Nike Sportswear LIVESTRONG Collection in conjunction with eight riders: Kyle Demers from New York City, Jupiter Desphy from Los Angeles, Superted from London, Takaharu “Hal” Okada from Tokyo, Yorgo Tloupas representing Paris, Berlin’s Henrik Kuerschner, Massan from San Francisco, and Lance Armstrong representing his hometown of Austin. Each color represents a different rider and their respective city. For the upcoming three, the design of Paris takes on subtlety with reflective black on black while the Berlin design adds some detailed colored stitches on white. The San Francisco version goes with dark cinder highlighted by stitches and Swoosh in orange.”

The Nike Sportswear Air Zoom Tiempo is fast becoming a hugely popular sneaker, having come of the Livestrong collaboration. Now is this quite impressive piece designed by journalist, graphic designer, photographer, and DJ Artoo. Simple and clean, this all white construction features a series of colors for the stitching around the entire sneaker which is influenced by fixed gear. This Nike Air Zoom Tiempo will be available in Berlin and Nike Sportswear at 21 Mercer this Fall.

Nike x LIVESTRONG’s STAGES exhibition has opened in Deitch Studios on Friday night in NYC. Featuring the same outstanding line up from the Paris show; Tom Sachs, KAWS, Jose Parla, Richard Prince and Ed Ruscha, the New York leg of the exhibition has picked up a few more artists to join the team; Futura and Dustin Yellin. Here we get a look at the Brooklyn based artists work that is on show and what he has to say about the STAGES art exhibition and what it means to be involved. 

Dustin Yellin, on his piece for STAGES: “Lance Armstrong and the Livestrong Foundation contacted me about STAGES, I guess Lance had been aware of my work for some time. I met him as part of this show, and these two pieces were made specifically for STAGES. I was thinking about the body and how cancer affects it and how disease in general affects it. The body is this perfect machine, and we’re continuing to figure out ways to fix it and build it back up again. These are life-size humans that are pretty much all ink and resin.

 “The pieces are created by stacking layers of drawings poured over a four-month period. For this one, I used computers, to build the men, and I sliced them up digitally, like an MRI, to create the 2 dimensional layers. The process works by pouring a layer of resin, letting it dry, and then painting a layer on it. The next day, I repeat the process, pouring another layer of resin on the previous drawing, letting that dry, and then painting on top of that. The form slowly builds as the 2-D marks build up. It’s about 70 drawings, stacked to make one composition over a 4-month period. This is how I work, these forms are a language that I am creating. I do all kinds of different biological and abstract forms, you can see additional work at dustinyellin.com.

The much blogged about “Stages” exhibition finally opened in the US yesterday at an event that was attended be a litany of the a-list art stars exhibiting. Hosted by Deitch Projects at a specially created pop-up gallery in New York’s Soho the show features the works by Ed Ruscha, Tom Sachs, Jules de Balincourt, Eric White, Christopher Wool, Rosson Crow, Shepard Fairey, Kaws, Cai Guo-Qiang, Yoshitomo Nara, Jose Parla, Richard Prince and Raymond Pettibon, which were initially exhibited in Paris earlier this year joined by new pieces from Os Gemeos, Futura and Dustin Yellin. Check out the images of the opening for the exhibition, which seeks to raise awareness and money for Lance Armstrong’s cancer charity the Livestrong Foundation.

STAGES is open to the public in New York from today through November 21, 2009. The show will then move to Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach in early December.

Lance Armstrong and Nike united earlier this year to launch the global art exhibition STAGES. Inspired by Lance and his fight against cancer, over twenty renowned artists have donated their time and creativity to express the LIVESTRONG message and raise funds for the Lance Armstrong Foundation, which is committed to empowering people affected by cancer. The result is a unique celebration of human potential bringing together art, philanthropy and sport. The work of each artist is available for purchase with proceeds directly benefiting the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

The show features some of the world’s most accomplished and promising international artists, including Ed Ruscha, Cai-Guo Qiang, Richard Prince, Catherine Opie, KAWS, Eric White, José Parlá, Christopher Wool, Tom Sachs, Dzine, and Rosson Crow. After its debut in Paris at Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin in July during the Tour de France, STAGES will have its official New York opening hosted by Deitch Projects on October 30, 2009. In New York, the Brazilian artists Os Gemeos, also known as “The Twins”, Futura, legendary for his contributions to early NYC graffiti culture, and the enigmatic 3-D painter, Dustin Yellin, have all created unique works that join the exhibition.
