Imaging and optics company Olympus has just announced their PEN E-PL1 camera today. Hot off the heels of the E-P2 comes this new model that boasts a built-in flash and some interface tweaks that result in a more user-friendly and cheaper package. It uses the same sensor as the Olympus DSLR’s and takes 12-megapixel images. The cool thing is that it has a dynamic 14-42mm lens and you can change it. It seems with the E-PL1 Olympus has managed to let point-and-shoot users have a bit more customization and fun in an easy to use and cheap package. Priced at $600 on the Olympus site.

Retro designs with modern technology has been the trend lately and Pentax looks to continue this trend with their Optio I-10. It seems to us this camera is the more affordable version of the Olympus EP-1. There is a list of features including “Eye-Fi connectivity capabilities (for wireless uploading), 5x optical zoom lenses, 2.7-inch LCD screens, high-res 12.1 megapixel sensors, and face, smile and blink detection.” Another thing that is common now is digital filters that can be applied on the camera itself without the aid of a computer which includes sepia and monochrome as well as “toy camera” and “funburst.” The Pentax Optio I-10 will be priced at $300 and check the Pentax website for dealers.

Only five months after the lauched of the much talked about E-P1, Olympus has announced it’s up-coming release of the E-P2. Featuring minor upgrades such as the addition of a port for a new high resolution electronic viewfinder (or external microphone), two new Art filters and a pearlescent black finish.

It also gains AF tracking and includes a new i-Enhance ‘colour boosting’ function. While it seems that the talk around the micro four thirds market very much shifted towards the Panasonic GF-1 when it was released in September. It’ll be interesting to see how the EP-2 will compare.

Panasonic officially announced the release of the GF1, their answer to Olympus’ EP-1 and a strong contender in the much talked about micro four-thirds camera market.

Shortly after release of much talked about Olympus EP-1 earlier this year, some leaked images appeared around the web of an up-coming Panasonic Micro 3/4’s prosumer compact, stirring up huge discussions around photography community. Well, the rumours can now be put to rest as Panasonic officially announces the up-coming release of their compact Micro four-thirds model, the GF-1.

As with the existing compact micro four-thirds on the market, the GF-1 stays compact by removing the traditional SLR mirrored viewfinder, while still allowing for itnerchangable lenses. Not only will the GF1 be the smallest and lightest camera in its class with an onboard flash (its 10-ounce body measures 4.7 by 2.8 by 1.4 inches), the Live MOS sensor captures images up to 12 megapixel and is also capable of taking high-defintion video (1280 by 720). Allowing the user to adjust depth of field to shift focus while shooting.

Also note-worthy is that a Micro four-thirds specifically compatable lense from Leica will be released alongside the GF1 come October. It will be the first Leica lens to adhere to the Micro Four Thirds standard, bringing with it a reputation for superior image quality and the ability to shoot sharp, clear images in macro mode.

The Panasonic GF1 will be available in 2 optional bundles. One of which includes a new LUMIX G 20mm/F1.7 ASPH compact, fixed lens; while the second has a LUMIX G VARIO 14-45mm/F3.5-5.6 ASPH/MEGA O.I.S zoom lens. (As seen below)

For those that really want to know more about this camera, I’d recommend you read the full dpreview here.
Or the official Panasonic site here, for a full 360 degree look.

I’ve long been a user of Olympus’ four-thirds DSLRs, but at the same time a huge fan of Panasonic’s compacts like the LX3. So I’ve been fairly neutral in the EP-1 vs GF1 debates, but since the official announcement and going through a number of reviews, I have to say I’m alot more excited about this up-coming October release than I ever was with the EP-1.

Panasonic and Olympus agreement to share a common format for interchangeable lenses last August was big news. Resulting firstly in the Lumix DMC-G1. This coming July will see the release of Olympus’ first camera built with this arrangement in mind. While detailed specs, model name and price are still yet to be revealed, what we do know is that this camera looks great, functions like a compact digital but is compatible with DSLR lenses. Bring on July!
