Statement from Projections Organizer Aaron Rose

There are few things that move people as much as seeing a great film. As the organizer of this festival I use the term “film” loosely here as I do the word “festival”. Because in this context, I do not necessarily refer only to feature films. In fact some of the most inspiring films I’ve ever seen have been under five minutes long. Projections is a celebration of these types of works. While the focus of this collection is mostly on young filmmakers, I have also chosen to include some masters from the past who, for many reasons, have created things that have moved me in some way. Additionally, it is my hope that by removing all these films from their usual theatrical setting, and instead presenting them in an art gallery context, that people will perhaps look at them a little differently. Not just as entertainment, but as the works of true artists, who contribute greatly to the visual culture of our times.

Aaron Rose is an artist, film director, writer, musician, and independent curator currently living in Los Angeles. For ten years (1992-2002) he was owner/director of the Alleged Gallery in New York, which launched the careers of many contemporary artists. The gallery inspired a book, Young, Sleek and Full of Hell which was released in 2002. Since then, Rose has been working as a freelance curator, choosing artists for the Undefeated Billboard Project, a public art project in Los Angeles produced in conjunction with Nike. He was co-curator of the successful museum exhibition and book Beautiful Losers: Contemporary Art & Street Culture which toured the world through 2008. Rose was director of the feature documentary film Beautiful Losers and recently completed the short documentary film Become A Microscope based on the life of 1960’s artist/activist nun Sister Corita. His publishing imprint, Alleged Press (in conjunction with Italian Publisher Damiani) releases hardcover books by contemporary artists. He is also co-editor (along with Ed Templeton & Brendan Fowler) of RVCA/ANP Quarterly, a free arts/culture magazine. Aaron’s writings have been published in Index, iD, Dazed and Confused, Self Service, Flash Art, and numerous exhibition catalogs. He plays music and tours with his band The Sads, infrequently exhibits his paintings and continues to organize exhibitions in galléries and museums worldwide.

Last week, SlamxHype let you know about mindthegap, Barry McGee and Phil Frost’s exhibition at Prism, LA’s most exciting new gallery. I checked out the preview tonight and was really impressed by what I saw. With a space designed by award-winning architectural design firm PATTERNS and an inaugural show curated by RVCA founder PM Tenore, co-owners Jared Najjar and PC Valmorbida are definitely off to a good start.

(from left) Jared Najjar, Andy Valmorbida, Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld, Stavros Niarchos

Not only is Prism is a fun addition to the Sunset Strip, it’s great to see more galleries sprouting out here that support the urban art scene. Says Australian born PC, “We are trying to close the gap between blue chip art and street art and make it accessible to everyone. When I first came to Los Angeles, it struck me that there was less activity here than in New York and there was some room for a place like this. I want to attract a lot of young people. It’s not your conventional, stuffy art gallery.” It’s definitely far from that. If you’re a Beautiful Losers fan and anywhere near LA between now and February 20th, you have got to check Prism out.

Mark FLOOD
Entertainment Weakly
November 22 – February 7, 2009
Opening Reception: Saturday, November 22, 6 – 9 pm
Press Release

Javier Peres is pleased to announce “Entertainment Weakly,” a solo exhibition by Houston-based artist Mark Flood. Inaugurating Peres Projects gallery in the Culver City section of Los Angeles, the exhibition will include mixed media drawings, paintings, sculpture and installation from the past and present.

Flood is a Merry Deformer, romping through the art world’s carefully arrayed aisles with a stencil and a can of spray paint, rearranging its face. Matters of identification are fertile ground upon which to sew mischief, and yet Flood never abandons the potential of a beautiful phenomenon in favor of just being stabby. The surface of a text panel or lace painting still holds all the subtle irregularities and shiny moments prone to seduction.

The works exhibited here cover three decades of Flood’s output, from the defaced advertisement drawings of the early 1980s to brand new assemblages fashioned from the local Texas debris of Hurricane Ike. Bathed in a acid-lime light, the group together presents, in Flood’s words, “topics for non-discussion: our relationship with pictures of celebrities, the effects of vibrant community on layers of dust, market correction fluid, accidental suicides, casual sex with photographs, healthy stalking, shared recipies for aesthetic disasters.”

Mark Flood (b. Houston, TX) lives and works in Houston, Texas and will be present for the opening.

“Entertainment Weakly” will be on view at Peres Projects (2766 S. La Cienega Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90034) through February 7, 2009. Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, from 11:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M and by appointment. For further information or reproductions please contact Sarah Walzer at tel. + 1 213 617 1100 or sarah@peresprojects.com.

And if you live in Berlin or NY, Mark Flood will have solo shows at Peres’ Belin space in March and at Zach Feuer Gallery in NY in May
