21 Mercer Street Store Opening
We at SlamxHype were granted a very special opportunity to take a trip to one of the world’s most electrifying cities, New York City, to attend the festivities put on by Nike for the opening of their 21 Mercer Street Store in SoHo. The store itself is located in one of the liveliest neighborhoods rich in shopping destinations, eateries, hotels, artistic expressions, and many other great cultural experiences. 21 Mercer is not just any old shop with any old regular materials that make up its aesthetics and interior — it is an experience created with a story behind it. The wooden boards and bleachers that adorn the inside are all taken from New York gymnasiums, which capture the essence of athletic competition and the desire to be at the pinnacle of performance. And now, Nike has presented to the world the products and shopping experience that reflect that very same drive and spirit.
21 Mercer’s inventory consists of the entire catalog of the freshly unveiled Nike Sportswear (NSW) collection, plus items exclusive only to this location. The collection is centered around eight icons: the Air Max 90, the Air Force 1, the Cortez, the Dunk, the Windrunner jacket, the Eugene track jacket, the AW77 fleece, and the NSW Tee. These items were selected for their relevance to Nike’s past, present and future, and for their timeless existence.
The four footwear styles offered make use of the most premium materials including the Nike Flywire technology — with updated twists in some cases. The AM 90 utilizes Flywire to reduce the weight of the shoe and it also features the Current sole. Chinese characters emblazon the tongue and when translated, the characters read “Run Like You Fly,” a most poetic sentiment for this dynamic shoe. The other three icons for footwear feature premium materials and fantastic colorways. DJ Clark Kent collaborated on colorways for three Air Force 1’s with the inspiration drawn from New York sport teams: the Jets, Knicks, and the Yankees. Rasheed Wallace also stayed true to his “old school” beliefs and stuck to his signature Sheed Highs — the only Air Force 1’s to ever grace an NBA court during play. Though not mentioned as one of the icons, the LunaRacer and the Air Rejuven8 will also be available at the 21 Mercer Street store. These two special styles reflect the ever-evolving designs and technological greatness that Nike is known for achieving.
The four apparel icons are some of the sharpest and most innovative pieces of apparel produced by the sportswear giants. The classic Windrunner, designed by Richard Hollister, made its debut in 1980 and has seen some amazing treatment from NSW. It has shed some weight and has also been enhanced with Flywire. The icon has also been seen on the bodies of our Olympic heroes in this Summer’s Olympic games and will be indelibly etched in our memories as the jacket worn by Olympians accepting the greatest prizes awarded during the greatest of sporting competitions. A true testament to innovative sportswear design, the Patchwork M65 jacket with all its technical splendor can be found here exclusively at 21 Mercer. All patches have been uniquely placed throughout the entire jacket and they were ultrasonically welded to create a true marvel of design and innovation. Also present is the AW77 fleece, which stands for Athletics West 1977. The fleece was Nike’s first foray into apparel back in 1977, and now it has resurfaced and made in collaboration with the world’s greatest fleece maker, Loopwheeler. It does not get any better than this in terms of quality and comfort.
21 Mercer also will house Nike Sportswear Bespoke. Bespoke is a whole new experience for customizing and creating shoes. The program offers 82 different materials and endless colorway possibilities. With your scheduled appointment, you will be able to sit side-by-side with Nike designers to maximize your customizing experience.
The 21 Mercer shopping experience is unparalleled and truly in a class of its own. The footwear, the apparel, the icons that all reside in the neighborhood of SoHo further demonstrates Nike’s desire and ability to be the best and with this latest endeavor, they make it tough to disagree.
