Here is an insightful look at Ma Yansong of MAD Architects ground breaking design for Chaoyang Park Plaza located in the heart of Beijing’s central business district. Construction is underway — albeit 2 years after its initial plan — and the project explores the relationship between architecture and its natural environment, creating a strong dialogue between the man-made structure and its immediate context.

Purposely positioned on the southern edge of Chaoyang Park — one of the Chinese city’s largest green spaces– the design is a reinterpretation of classical Chinese painting, transforming natural scenery into modern city landscapes. Highlighted by a pair of asymmetrical towers, the façade, ridges and valleys characterize the structure, giving the impression of being affected by erosion or other forces of nature.
