The-Hoerengracht-detail-001

The National Gallery in London have brought famed American artist Ed Kienholz’s ‘The Hoerengracht’ to London for the first time.  The life-size, walk-through recreation of Amsterdam’s red-light district with brick walls, glowing windows and mysterious doorways of Amsterdam’s claustrophobic streets and half-dressed, garishly lit mannequins of ‘The Hoerengracht’ reveal a theatre of grim sociology, filled with the most vulgar, ugly and ramshackle aspects of society.  The controversial work will be uncomfortable bedfellows for The National Gallery’s collection of great masters and often reserved visitors, but surely marks it out as a truly modern masterpiece.

‘The Hoerengracht’ is on display at the National Gallery in London from 18 November 2009 – 21 February 2010.
