Japanese artist Ernesto Neto has created the Armoury’s first commissioned work titled ‘Anthropodino’, hundreds of yards of diaphonous material make a suspended canopy from which long ’stalectites’ descend. On the ground cavernous walkways and rooms have been created where various talks and participatory activities will take place over the exhibitions duration. This work has been created to be experienced and although the majority of us can only enjoy the pleasure of it’s scope through our minds eye the concept is awe inspiring and captivating. Being dwarfed by such monumental scale in this context could only be a pleasure. That pleasure would only be enhanced by the olfactory sensation contributed by the hundreds of pounds of spices which the said stalactites are filled with: tumeric, clove, ginger, black pepper and ginger. The work spans the three dimensions of the space and is roughly 100 feet wide by 192 feet long. If you look at the above link there is a film that documents the construction of this epic and sensory installation. This makes me want to spend some time thinking about the possibility of scale, and brood over life’s potentiality.
