Los Angeles’ Family Bookstore will take up a month long NYC popup space. The project is called Thirty Days and runs April 8 – May 7. Based in a 4200 sq foot Tribeca storefront they’ll play host to a Family Bookstore, an ‘artists in conversation’ series, live bands, performances, author readings, an art exhibition, and art project space. All events are free and open to the public.

The interior of Thirty Days is designed by Ben Jones of Paper Rad. Thirty Days is curated by David Jacob Kramer and Sammy Harkham.

Here is a brief list of happenings, but stay tuned for more news as a website devoted to Thirty Days NY will launch in a few days. We’ll keep you updated.

Artists In Residency:

Meryl Smith: April 8 – May 7. Smith will transfer her studio to Thirty Days for the month to construct a giant sculptural work

Aska Matsumiya: April 8 – April 17. Matsumiya will spend the opening week and a half improvising with selected musical guests, and recording. Various sound-making tools will be set up for visitors

Mathew Thurber: May 21 – 24. Thurber will be recording books on tape and lo-fi animations on rolls of paper

Sumi Ink Club: May 4 – 7. Sumi Ink Club will be hosting open, group drawing sessions

KING KONG – An exhibition of art from Los Angeles (Line-up to be announced in the next few days)

April 8 – Opening party. Live sets by: Eric Copeland (Black Dice) + Brian Degraw (Gang Gang Dance) + Aska Matsumiya (The Sads) – accompanied by psychedelic light show by Gary Panter and Josh White

April 10 – Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth perform live as Mirror/Dash. Followed by a signing of the brand new Sonic Youth art book SENSATIONAL FIX, and the limited edition KIM GORDON: THE NOISE PAINTINGS.

April 11 – Comedy by Fred Armison + Andrew Jeffrey Wright

April 12 – Aaron Rose presents rare and unseen short films and VHS tapes

April 13 – Author Readings by A.M. Homes and Sean Wilsey

April 18 – Flicker: Films on a Screen. Short, unseen 8mm films presented by Lance Bangs

April 20 – Albert Maysles in discussion with Peter Sutherland

April 21 – Will Oldham in discussion with Hugh Nissenson

April 24 – Lee Ranaldo and Alan Licht perform Text of Light accompanied by psychedelic light show by Gary Panter and Josh White

April 25 – Tim Barber’s Mystery Night

April 27 – Charles Willeford symposium. To celebrate the reissue of Charles Willeford’s I Was Looking for a Street, co-published by Family and Picturebox. Symposium with crime writer Lawrence Block, Jesse Pearson, and publishers Dan Nadel and Sammy Harkham

April 29 – Patrick Smith premiering new animated artwork

May 5 – Art Spiegelman in conversation with Ken Jacobs

May 6 – Performance and screening by Shana Moulton, followed by performance by Lucky Dragons
