'Introducing' Joshua Petker
For this current installment of Introducing, we look to the Los Angeles based painter, Joshua Petker, as the topic of discussion this week. Petker is fresh in our mind as he just had a show entitled, “Black Sugar,” that opened on October 4th at Los Angeles’ Corey Helford Gallery and although I could not make it, I made it a point to follow up with friends who attended the opening and the overall consensus was the same — it was amazing.
That is no surprise as this graffiti artist who has turned into a very skilled fine-art painter creates exquisite paintings with women as the focal point to portray women as these beautiful beings. Petker is said to draw influence from Gustav Klimt, who was known for ornate and beautiful paintings of females, and you can see it in Petker’s work. Both do an excellent job of capturing the mood, but one thing that I appreciate coming from Petker, is the focus on the actual woman and the encompassing beauty.
