JR “Wrinkles of the City” Exhibition at the Shanghai Biennial
Renowned French photographer JR, has made a name creating giant portraits of people from all facets of life, is an artist and activist is preparing a large scale project with an exhibition entitled “Wrinkles of the City”. The project seeks to capture the memories of a city through the testimony of its elderly inhabitants through interviews in which each person recalls the changes that their city has undergone. Then, each person’s portrait, printed in a monumental size is superimposed onto the facades of the city. The superimposition of the portraits and their wrinkles shows the city’s creases, highlights traces of history, sometimes even in a painful way for a city that has also lost certain aspects of its own youth.
For the Shanghai Biennial, Galerie Magda Danysz will host JR who will offer a fascinating thought in a city that has witnessed the establishment of the Communist Party, World War II, Mao Zedong victory over General Chiang Kai-Shek’s troops, the Cultural Revolution, and the Great Leap Forward, all of which has shaped the development of Shanghai. JR will begin his work throughout the city’s streets on October 23rd and the gallery exhibition will open on the 26th.
