A first image of KAWS’ ‘Companion’ in balloon form has been revealed ahead of the character’s appearance in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Photographed during a test flight in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the 40-foot-long balloon, made from urethane-coated nylon, has been a work in process since Parade executives approached the artist two years ago, with actual physical work on the structure happening over the last seven months. The balloon holds roughly 4,500 cubic feet of helium and will go down in history as only the fifth balloon to be included in the Parade by a living artist, alongside Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami, Tom Otterness and Tim Burton.
