Portuguese-born artist Pedro Matos is set to open a new solo show at LA’s Martha Otero Gallery next month. Building Castles Made of Sand will feature a new series of oil paintings on canvas and azulejo panels – a traditional Portuguese medium of hand-painted, tin-glazed, ceramic tile work. These works incorporate Matos’ rich and complex layering and deep color schemes – a style which he has developed with an eye to tradition but has executed in stunning contemporary detail. Combining texture, patterns, realistic figurative painting, new media, digital and text references, Building Castles Made of Sand begins a conversation between the work and viewer surrounding the impermanence of social and cultural values in our society.
Castles Made of Sand opens May 17 and runs through June 15, 2013 – Don’t miss this exhibition if you’re in LA.
