Richard Phillips Solo Exhibition at Gagosian Gallery
On display at Gagosian Gallery until October 20 is a new eponymous solo exhibition by artist/filmmaker Richard Phillips. For Phillips, critique is as much an intrinsic material in the conception and staging of his work as the materials of their making. His conflating of subject and genre continues to provide challenging comment on the condition and reach of contemporary art. Examples of Phillips’ pop art are shown throughout the exhibition, including his recent phase which hinges on the self-awareness of real-life subjects. Having portrayed Sasha Grey and Lindsay Lohan in 2011 films, the two starlets make a return, this time represented by large-scale paintings, alongside an additional collaboration with Brazilian supermodel Adriana Lima to create a new series of paintings that depict her against backdrops of iconic Brazilian landmarks.
