Born in New York, based in San Francisco, Photographer Jon Dragonette is the latest artist to be featured with our upcoming “Bailout” show in mind. You can check out his work this Saturday at LA’s Continental Gallery, details here, check out Jon’s thoughts of the show and more after the jump.
SLAMXHYPE: Please introduce yourself and what is your background?
JON DRAGONETTE: I feel like I am at an AA meeting. My name is Jon Dragonette and I am a photographer. My background is Italian, Native American, and I think – a little Irish. End result: a bad temper, the ability to track all sized game and the bomb building techniques of the IRA. Perhaps I should change my profession?
SXH: Can you tell us a bit about your artwork for the show?
JD: Hmmm…that’s a trick question. If I don’t tell you about it then it will be a surprise…but if I do tell you about it, maybe it will interest people to come and check it out…Catch 22…So I will say this: my work for the show is based around the idea of “Consumerism”. It deals with the past, the present, and maybe a little of the future. It’s kinda fucked up, kinda funny, and a little true.
SXH: How did you interpret and execute the title “Bailout”?
JD: It’s been hard; because when I was thinking of the title “Bailout” what really came to mind was getting my family out of jail. They are a rough bunch!
SXH: What is your take on commercial art?
JD: I’ll take it.It seems like I see a lot of corporations sponsoring a lot of shows. What’s the difference between getting paid to do something for corporate America, or producing work to be sold at a show that is paid for by corporate America?
SXH: How do you plan to celebrate the holidays?
JD: I’m not sure? Maybe I will wait outside a Wal-Mart at 4:00am and get into a fistfight trying to buy the last Nintendo Wii. Then my Christmas present would be a “Bailout”.
