Tom Sachs ‘Bricolage Magazine #2′
Following the release of Bricolage Magazine #1 in November 2009, Tom Sachs presents the next limited edition zine in the series. The D.I.Y aesthetic of the magazine, photocopied and staple bound, is recognizable from the artist’s previous installation work and other print-based projects. Like much of Sachs’ work, the magazine takes its cue from various hallmarks of contemporary culture, re-tooling familiar imagery through bricolage to shift meaning and find a new sort of critical syntax.
Bricolage Magazine #2 –“STREET WOOD”—is built up from appropriated images and text that have been degraded, reproduced, cut up and roughly taped together. For Sachs, process is clearly integral to the final object, and here as elsewhere, his work retains the visible traces of its making, a record of the labor spent. Whether constructing an elaborate full-scale model of the Apollo 11 Lunar Module, or hand-assembling magazines, the artist’s keen sense of materiality and assured craftsmanship is apparent.
Published by Tom Sachs Studio, Bricolage Magazine #2 is 26 pages, 8.5” x 5.5” and retails for $15.00. The book can be purchased at Printed Matter.
The launch of the second issue of Bricolage Magazine, by Tom Sachs will be held alongside a signing on Thursday, December 16, 6-8 PM. Printed Matter is located at 195 Tenth Avenue, between 21st and 22nd Street in New York City.
