Every season, COMME des GARÇONS features particular artists on the mini catalogue that it sends as direct mail to select buyers and recipients. For 2013, manga artist, (some would say deity), Katsuhiro Otomo was chosen. Otomo is perhaps best known for his Akira series, and a slide from his globally-revered manga adorns the cover of COMME’s SS13 direct mailer. Also included in the catalogue are a number of images first seen in comic editions by British art and comic publisher, Nobrow. The general idea is that when these images are put together, they read as a book in their own right. Designed and coloured by Rei Kawakubo herself, the comics appear as a series of collages in their new context. While this isn’t exactly news to COMME des GARÇONS fans, we think it’s time to take a look at some of the incredible work by Otomo and Nobrow that the brand has used.
