When you’ve reached the status that Jay Z achieved in 2013, you can pretty much do anything you want: release your newest album as download through a phone company, drop $2,590 leather boxer shorts as part of your collection with Barneys, start a sports agency and threaten the Yankees with a full page photo in the New York Post of Robinson Cano as a Met.
You can now add “getting a piece of art into the Miami Art Basel show” to that list, as Jay Z has collaborated with New York-based collage artist David Datuna on a wall sculpture that will be debuted at the Contessa Gallery’s Art Basel booth on December 5th.
The mixed media piece uses hundreds of eyeglasses to create portraits of a young Jay Z alongside a grizzled Picasso. Read what you what from that juxtaposition, but the work, titled “Jay Z/Picasso: Opposition of Imagination”, has already received an out-sized heaping of buzz thanks to Jay Z.
