Rob Pruitt opened his show “Artworks for Teenage Boys” and “Artworks for Teenage Girls,” at Gavin Browns Enterprise and Maccarone on September 11th. Featuring series of colorful, chopped up self-portraits, the show also includes an installation of painted types, referencing the late yet highly celebrated Jean-Michel Basquiat.

    It’s appropriation, not plagiarism. To quote Wikipedia: “In the visual arts, to appropriate means to adopt, borrow, recycle or sample aspects (or the entire form) of man-made visual culture.” and “Plagiarism is defined…as “the wrongful appropriation, close imitation, or purloining and publication, of another author’s language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions, and the representation of them as one’s own original work.” Rob Pruit is’nt passsing the image off as his own work, he’s just used the image as part of his work, there’s a world of difference.
