Sign Painters, a feature-length documentary shot by Sam Macon and Faythe Levine, finds the art of sign painting alive and well in the US. In this short re-edit for NOWNESS, we are introduced to Mike Meyer from Minnesota, Seattle’s Sean Barton, Marjory Garrison from Echo Park, Los Angeles, and the men behind New York’s Colossal Media, representing both the old and new school of hand-lettered sign painters in North America. In production since 2010, the project has also evolved into a book, with a foreword by Ed Ruscha – himself a former sign painter – and the feature-length is now set to debut on screens across the globe. Take a look at the special edit above and head over to NOWNESS to read an interview with the filmmakers.
