The women Sylvia Ji paints are all beautiful, each in their own way. Regal or flirtatious, seductive or sorrowful, her skill for portraying emotion is undeniable. Each subject she paints, whether its a portrait based on a real person or a ficticious personage, has an air of sexy self confidence. When looking at her paintings one gets uneasy with voyeuristic self-consciousness; like they are breaking the rules and getting a glimpse of something they’re not supposed to be seeing. Her show “Haute Epoch” kicks off next Saturday at Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City. If you can, try and make it down to So. Cal to check it out, should be a cool night.
