Currently on show at London’s Maureen Paley gallery, Central Nervous System marks both a departure from and extension of Wolfgang Tillmans’ celebrated Neue Welt project, with a return to more traditional portraiture photography. Focusing on a single subject for the entire show, Central Nervous System is “as much an intimate portrait of a nuanced relationship as it is a portrait of Tillmans himself.” The photographer’s most recent work experiments with new developments in inkjet printing that allow the incredible sharpness of his images to look hyper-real and yet painterly. This results in Tillmans showing us the world as it is, in its often overlooked strangeness and beauty. Central Nervous System runs 14 October – 24 November, 2013.
