OK.. so it’s not quite what I imagined my return to Football would be like, a few hours notice, and on a poorly lit 5-a-side field in NY… but after injury ended my career in football over 10 years ago, I put my boots on again for the first time last night. I always refused to play casually, not wanting to let people down who might have expected me to live up to something, but I figured, 5-a-side in the US in a place where no one knows me, isn’t going to put too much pressure on me.. The result, heaps of fun, a shit load of mistakes, all expected after not touching a ball for that long, and not even going for a run in almost a year, and the sorest body imaginable, I can barely walk today, and actually fearful that I won’t have recovered in time for next Monday nights fixture..

I’ll try to get some action shots next week…

I thought it would be ironic and funny for a New Zealander to wear an Australian jersey in America, where everyone thinks I’m Australian anyway, probably a little less funny, and a little more ironic, as of course, it just meant everyone had more reason to think I was Australian.

  • Mad Men Barbie’s

I’m not sure who these are targetted at, but great still! Mattel are making 10,000 of each of these Mad Men Barbies based on the show’s characters Don Draper, his wife Betty, Roger Sterling and Joan Holloway. Retailing at $74.99, they’ll be sitting on agency desks all over the world soon enough.

And while I’m here, welcome me to NYC, great first half a week in my new home! Not even that cold ;-)

  • Tap That…

    sung-3

Where I live, drinking Tap Water is as good if not better than bottled water. And while its not everywhere, there are filtering systems that enable it to be. With the environment in the shape it is, the last thing we should be doing is adding millions of plastic bottles to landfills around the globe, I’m a big advocate of drinking from the tap!

My RSS just got bombarded(was literally on a bunch of sites within 5 minutes) with this new Bottle design by Korean born designer, Junggi Sung. Sung is currently based in San Fransisco at LUNAR Design, and is held in high acclaim amongst product designers, I can see why!

I’m about to relocate to a city where tap water isn’t so clean, but I’m sure I can figure a way around that, and in doing so, find a use for this bottle.

  • Razzle Dazzle

I’m posting these for aesthetic reasons, but the story behind these ships and their unique makeover is well worth remembering also..

British Artist and naval officer Norman Wilkinson pioneered the Dazzle Camouflage movement, known as Razzle Dazzle during World War I. That might not be anything of too much interest, other than the age of the modern geometric design, the rationale on the other hand…

If you think about the simplistic technical nature of warfare around 1914-18, destroying a battle ship was as simple as following these 3 steps..Step 1: Locate your target’s position and plot its course; Step 2: Determine the ship’s speed and confirm the direction it is heading: Step 3: Launch torpedo not directly at the ship, but where you think it’s going to be by the time the torpedo reaches the ship.

Wilkinson devised that Step 1, was a given, how can you hide a large ship above water?! so.. concentrated on protecting the combat of Steps 2 and 3… by using Razzle Dazzle and its unique bright colours, and geometric shapes and stripes, that these ships would be able to disguise its speed, size and direction.

I can clearly see why this didn’t take off past World War I, but none-the-less.. the result is impressive.

  • Style Icons Version 3.0

I think I started this blog at the worst possible time, as you might have seen, there’s a lot going on with slamxhype right now, we’re pretty busy moving into 2010, with that The New Order Issue 4 is in full swing, amongst some big changes we’re making to both publications. Anyway, thats my excuse for the lack of updates, funnily enough I’m the first person to give people shit for not updating, saying it only takes 10mins…

When we look for Style Icons, and inspiration we almost solely look to the past, I wanted to give myself a challenge and see if I could put together some images of icons of today in menswear…

  • Jack Kerouac Literary Estate in Limbo

    jack_kerouac4

This is a great article, it’s not often I get caught actually ‘reading’ something indepth on the internet…

When Jack Kerouac wrote his will shortly before his death in 1969, he was broke. Forty years later, a ferocious battle rages over his multi-million dollar literary estate. Kerouac, at odds with his third wife, Stella Sampas, had left everything to his mother, Gabrielle Kerouac. But when Gabrielle Kerouac passed away in 1973, her will indicated that the entire estate would go to Sampas, news that had shocked Kerouac’s remaining blood relatives—his daughter, Jan, and his nephew, Paul Blake Jr. When Sampas died in 1990, her siblings inherited the Kerouac literary estate, with the youngest brother, John Sampas, acting as executor. It was a stunning series of events for Kerouac scholars and fans, but the real surprise was yet to come. Last July, a judge in Tampa, Florida ruled that Gabrielle Kerouac’s 1973 will was a forgery.

Gerald Nicosia, author of the acclaimed Kerouac biography, Memory Babe, first suspected foul play in 1994, when Jan Kerouac saw a copy of the will for the first time and noticed that her grandmother’s name was misspelled.

I’ve always been heavily interested in era’s, movements, and probably most importantly the icons of the times in question. Looking deeper, and trying to figure whether they were equivalent of idols of today, and if its even practical to make comparisons. I’m not afraid to admit that I’m obsessed with aesthetics, I’m obsessed with what people wear.. I’m smart enough to consider there’s more to life, but indulgent enough to keep it in mind.

To be remembered you need to be memorable, is a look enough to stand the test of time, or is a look what you need to take advantage of your talents, if your talents are your look, will that out weigh the reason you’re remembered. These icons above, seldom did they consider their look, often did they consider their drive and ability.

  • Bad Boy Tiger Woods

    TIGER-WOODS-SHIRTLESS-VANITY-FAIR-1

Im assuming Tiger Woods had these photos taken by Annie Leibovitz for the cover of Vanity Fair prior to all the chaos that ensued after November 27th.. I wonder what he’s thinking now?

As always Leibovitz show’s just how good she is, but Tiger merely reinterates his new found Bad Boy image. Leibovitz concept behind the shoot; “Tiger is an intensely competitive athlete—and quite serious about his sport. I wanted to reveal that in these photos. And to show his incredible focus and dedication.”

The media’s portrayal of this shoot we are about to see..

Perhaps its best Tiger just sticks with this image now, rebrands himself as a hard assed bad boy athelete with a penchant for keeping numerous women on the course at once. Here’s to 2010 – go get em Tiger!

I always have really good intentions with these storyboards, but even at Fashion School, I had the attention span of a 7 year old in need of Ritalin, leaving me just getting sick of searching, cutting, pasting.. at the same time, I really enjoy them(for about 3 minutes), and really enjoy looking back at them in time to come. Given I managed to read 3 books in 3 days over Christmas, it sort of signalled to me that perhaps I was getting more patient as I get older, so why not try it again… with all things, start small, start easy and try to keep it up.. I’m going to try to do these each week, keep them on file on this blog, and hopefully see some improvements.

  • A New Comeback

It’s been a while since I’ve had a blog, I went through a phase where I was blogging on so many sites, I thought it was best to just end it all… It’s been long enough now for me to become inspired enough again to get this thing going.

So why did I decide to give myself my blog back?… firstly, you may have noticed I’ve become much more involved in slamxhype.com again as of late, sometimes it just takes a bit of a break to get your heart back into something, and with that has come already and will continue to come further change, secondly, while slamxhype.com is a lot of work, most of you who know me or “of me”, know I’m involved in a lot of other projects too, some of them are even fun ;-)

Plus of course The New Order Magazine as always brings lots of exciting projects and meetings, and more importantly to me anyway, conjuring up new thoughts best for blogging.

I promise not to turn this blog into one of those ‘look what someone sent me’ journals, because thats just boring, anything I get sent, chances are its on the front page of this site already, unless its something personal and then well.. its something personal. That said, this had to be shown, simply as its one of the coolest things I’ve even been gifted. A big thanks to Rick Owens for your generosity and support as always, one of my favourite people!
