  • Cy Choi 2010 Fall/Winter Collection

The Cy Choi 2010 Fall/Winter Collection is Koren designer Chul Young Choi’s second collection. The Korean born designer is now based in Milan, where he designed and manufactured his latest collection entitled and inspired by the philosophy of INTERJECT.

Human’s brain inclines to be comfortable towards the familiar things. On the other hand when it is
confronted with unfamiliar things, it concentrates on them. INTERJECT, suddenly breaking in on the familiar routine, makes us feel strange and focus on it.

This extraordinary experience doesn’t mean that the interjected objects are new and unfamiliar. According to Russian formal literature theorist named Shklovsky, V, ‘Defamiliarization’ is the artistic technique of forcing the audience to see common things in an unfamiliar or strange way, in order toIenhance perception of the familiar.
INTERJECT transforms our familiar routine and makes it fresh and novel, so that we can rethink of the standardized things and give them a untried meaning and finally sublimed them in art. Art is not reemergence of ordinary life.
it reflects and retransforms our daily life with a harmonized composition. Also it stimulates our sense that has been customed with and makes our everyday life soaring up into the air. INTERJECT in our daily routine meets our gaze and creates new meaning.

  • Lost Rockers | A new documentary film from the makers of American Hardcore

    lostrockers

LOST ROCKERS is the new film from Paul Rachman and Steven Blush, makers of the AMERICAN HARDCORE punk rock documentary that premiered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and was theatrically released by Sony Pictures Classics.

LOST ROCKERS reveals great musicians overlooked by pop culture. It offers insight into what it takes to “make it,” and why so many of equal talent to famous stars fall through the cracks. The film tells the life stories of these forgotten artists — of different eras, genres, creeds and orientations — from their doomed paths to fame to their ultimate redemption. You’ll experience amazing music you can’t believe you never heard.

LOST ROCKERS has only just begun. We’ve shot our first four interviews (Gloria Jones, Jake Holmes, David Peel and Dr. israel) with many more to come, including famous rock stars commenting on their lesser-known contemporaries. Completing our research and moving into the post-production phase will require travel across the US, UK and Europe. Your contributions will help put us on this path.

Hankjobenhavn Sunglasses have quickly become a favourite of mine since launching in 2008. The Danish eyewear company, who’s clothing collection is just as impressive, follow principles of mixing traditional construction and craftsmanship with originality and classical design. Taking inspiration from the 50’s, their newest collection is available at London’s Garbstore.

  • Church’s Factory Visit Video

    churchs-video

This Church’s Factory Visit Video showcases just why we’re continuously preaching the values of fine English made footwear. Church’s have been making shoes in Northamption, England by hand since 1873, in all that time none of their original quality values have been lost.

Church’s was founded in 1873 by Thomas Church and his three sons Alfred, William and Thomas Jr., who could count on family experience in the production of handmade men’s shoes dating back to 1675. Church’s is based in Northampton, not far from London, in a county which has been the centre of a flourishing leather and footwear industry since the Middle Ages.

In the space of a few years, Church’s was transformed from a craft workshop into a benchmark firm for high-quality footwear, both locally and for the most demanding shoe shops in London and throughout Great Britain. One of the earliest styles, the Adaptable, won a Gold Medal at the 1884 Crystal Palace Exhibition. The Adaptable was unusual for the time: it came in pairs of left and right and “in six widths in every conceivable style and material”. Most of the other companies’ shoes at the time were still sold as straights – identical pairs without lefts or rights. At the dawn of the 20th century, Church’s began exporting outside Europe to new markets such as the United States, Canada and South America. 1921 saw the first Church’s directly operated shop open in London. In the same year, the multi-fitting “Archmoulded” shoes for ladies was introduced, in response to a much-changed society in which both women and fashion were becoming prominent.

A new factory was opened in 1957 and is still today the firm’s worldwide headquarters. The visit of Queen Elizabeth II in 1965, together with the prestigious Queen’s Award for exports, put the official seal of recognition on Church’s over centennial tradition and status as a leading international brand.

    “Good Year Welted” Construction

It still takes up to eight weeks to produce a pair of Church’s shoes: each undergoes over 250 detailed manual operations before it leaves the factory.

All of Church’s men’s welted shoes are manufactured in Northampton: all the production is hand-made and performed inside the factory by specialized craftsmen.

The Goodyear construction, that has given English footwear its worldwide fame, has proved to be both complex and reliable. Instead of being stitched directly together, the sole and the upper are firstly stitched on to a “welt”, a strip of hand-cut leather, which is then in turn stitched on to the bottom of the shoes in the early stages of manufacture. This construction means that the sole can be easily detached from the bottom of the shoe in case of a repair and be resoled for a second life. Church’s in fact continues to provide the traditional full refurbishment service using the same top quality materials and the same care as in the original manufacturing process. This service considerably extends the life of each Church’s pair of shoes: with proper care Church’s shoes will last a lifetime

  • 5 Minutes with… Nat Thomson

Nat Thomson is hip and happening web marketing and comms player, a writer and a DJ. He’s worked with companies from Phenomenon to Calvin Klein to Mountain Dew and has written for everyone from The Fader to Wax Poetics. You can download DJ mixes and read his style and music notes at Asilentflute.com or twitter.com/asilentflute if you have no attention span whatsoever.

    NAT

    Name: Nat Thomson

    Location: New York City

What are you reading? Bill Bruford’s autobiography, the Spring Summer Issue of Purple Fashion, Movie People by Fred Baker, Dry Hustle by Sarah Kernochan and lots of 4chan.

What are you listening to? A couple awesome John McLaughlin albums, Koudlam, Wham!, and the new Sade. On the drum n bass tip, Instra:Mental, D-Bridge, Original Sin, Taxman and Random Movement.

Favourite artist? Oh man, Jesus… today I’ll say Hipgnosis or Thomas Hart Benton. But, you know, new artists all the time. Babak Radboy is dope, check him out.

Favourite movie? That’s easier. Blade Runner or maybe Kikujiro. Oh, Croupier is good too.

I am influenced by…. Enlightening conversation, good books, the insane amount of image and video online and the lyrics of Gil Scott Heron and Michael Franks.

Do you parents understand what your job is? Yeah, they’re pretty chill bros.

I spent last night… Doing yoga, then watching Heavy Metal and Private Lessons, both from 1981. Two fine films. Heavy Metal features cartoon boobs and Private Lessons is about a 15 year old getting laid by his housekeeper. That was when the movie market was geared towards dope smokers and horny teens, but in a more straightforward manner than today.

What do you eat for breakfast? Toast, cheese and tomato, or a salad. Something light, with an espresso sometimes.

Favourite thing to do in your city? Two things. One, people watching. Most of the best dressed people in the world either live here or visit regularly. Sorry Tokyo, you’re played. Also there are tons and tons of total weirdos to gawk at. And did I mention the babes? Number two, running. The best way to see the city. If you can turn out a good six-miler, you can cover a lot of ground. Also, eating pizza.

What’s something people might not know about you? I don’t know man, if you go online you can pretty much find out all you want to know. I’m way into houseplants, how about that? Houseplants are the new sneakers.

What are you working on this week? Some pretty interseting stuff with Newsweek, lining up regular columns on a couple sites and writing some restaurant reviews for the SoHo Grand hotels here in NYC. I might vacuum too, things could get pretty wild.
