  • Cassette Playa Autumn/Winter 2010 Augmented Reality Presentation

While Cassette Playa has been one of the most influential brands in mens fashion, starting what could be as close to a movement as we’ve seen in recent years, it was important Carri Munden stay one step ahead of the pretenders, and in her own signature futuristic fashion she has with a unique live Augmented Reality performance at London Fashion Week.

Cassette Playa uses a hyperactive, mixed-up variety of images, ideas and reference points, but has created a coherent identity over the past few years by presenting them in a way that remains readable. Their multi-layered prints, reminiscent of cut and pasted web graphics, and the use of ancient symbols in their designs, are references to visual languages new and old and demonstrate the importance of communication in their work. The presentation of their AW10/11 capsule collection at London Fashion Week in a “live Augmented Reality performance” further explored the possibilities for fashion as communication by introducing wearable AR.

The project was realised with help from the Digital Fashion Studio at the London College of Fashion, which developed the software behind the presentation. Rather than a standard 2D barcode, their program recognised the rune-like symbols placed on the clothing, triggering 3D animations as each of the models posed in front of a video camera. The audience then saw a mixed reality on-screen as a series of CG additions – evoking the show’s themes of violence, knowledge and emotion – appeared in realtime, adorning the models’ avatars with helmets, new faces, and flashes of shape and colour.

Cassette Playa will continue to explore their intention to “make real life more like a computer game”, and there are plans for some form of release of their app. Until then, we’ll just have to keep holding up magazine pages to our webcams, and waiting for Tron Legacy.

  • Alexander McQueen Final McQ Collection

The late, great Alexander McQueen leaves behind his final McQ Collection. The McQueen diffusion line takes a classic approach to an 80’s Punk/Skins aesthetic and presents one of its best collections yet. While theres been much discussion in the later part of this week around Gucci Group’s announcement that the brand will continue to operate after the untimely passing of its founder, I personally have doubts over whether or not Alexander McQueen is the kind of brand that can be carried on post the McQueen era, we know atleast at this stage, the brand will continue to release great collections till the founders pre-designed collections run out.

  • Nike HTM2 Run Boot TZ

The much awaited release of the newest series of HTM2 products is upon us, the Nike HTM2 Run Boot TZ is as impressive as worth the wait.

    HTM2_low-HF_1

    HTM2_low_HF_2

Sometimes crossing the train platform can be as challenging as hiking Mt. Hood. Drawing on this insight, design super-group Hiroshi Fujiwara, Tinker Hatfield, Mark Parker and Mark Smith set out to revolutionize the traditional ankle boot for both style and performance. The process led them deep into Nike’s chest of running innovations and onto the track for some serious testing. After a year-and-a-half of rigorous testing, the result is the Nike HTM2 Run Boot.

    HTM2_low_HF_3

    nike_htm2_group

Addressing the need for stability, flexibility and weatherproofing, the HTM2 incorporates Nike Free natural-motion technology combined with a lightweight, water-repellant, four-way-flexible upper. Details like the elastic gusset and pull straps nod to traditional Chelsea boot styling while notching up the functionality of the HTM2—slip it on, and it stays in place.

    nike_htm2_hi_detail

Form has been given no less consideration than function. The HTM2 Run Boot High’s slim top and low-profile grey colorway with volt/anthracite highlights allow for effortless pairing. The HTM2 Run Boot Low comes in four colorways: in black-on-black, neutral grey/white, black/white, dark obsidian/vivid pink and white. The design also enhances the easy-on, easy-off concept further. Both features a protective rubberized toe cap for durability and a spray-stenciled swoosh.

    nike_htm2_low_angle

The HTM2 builds on the collaboration between Fujiwara, Hatfield and Parker that began in 2002 with the HTM Woven Boot. The second “M” of the HTM2 moniker stands for Jordan Brand Creative Director Mark Smith, who was invited to join the inner circle and bring to the table his expertise in crafting finely-detailed, premium footwear. Smith is known for his pioneering use of laser technology on Nike shoes, which has gained his designs a loyal following among sneaker aficionados.

Hiroshi Fujiwara is the founder of Fragment Design and is a global sportswear icon. Tinker Hatfield is recognized as one of the most innovative designers in the history of footwear. Mark Parker’s visionary leadership, while a member of Nike’s design team, earned him his current position as Nike CEO.

Put these four men in a room and something special is bound to happen. It’s this devotion to experimentation and the belief that there is always a way to improve on the past that caught the attention of Nike’s Innovation Kitchen during the Run Boot’s development. They are a hard bunch to please. The fit, comfort and performance provided by the HTM2 Run Boot put it in a class of its own.

Born on the track, bred for the street. The Nike HTM2 Run Boot is available exclusively in Japan and at 21 Mercer on Feb. 20th and March 1st.

  • W)Taps Spring/Summer 2010 ‘96-69′ Collection

W)Taps release a look at their 2010 Spring/Summer Collection entitled ‘96-69′. Boldly I’m going to say this is my favourite collection from Tet thus far, as the brand has evolved over the past few years, while its philosophy has stayed the same, its aesthetic has moved more away from its military roots and towards a blend of Punk and 50’s Jazz. Check it out for yourself.

  • New Balance x BEAMS CM1500 Sneakers

The relationship between New Balance and japanese retailer BEAMS continues each season, with this CM1500 being its newest creation for Spring/Summer. The sneaker is pretty much the perfect mix, a classic suede upper with one of our favourite models the 1500. While trends dictate a movement toward classic footwear, the likes of Brogues and Oxfords seeing more and more light of day, we always need a good pair of sneakers and why not take on the same classical philosophy.

  • “Size DOES Matters” at Flag Art Foundation | Curated by Shaquille O’Neal

    shaq-cavs

Shaquille O’Neil is a legend of massive proportions, and has accomplished everything in the sport of basketball, but this week see’s the 7′1″ tall athlete make his debut as a curator of contemporary art, with his show “Size DOES Matters” at NYC’s Flag Art Foundation. Shaq isn’t the only massive drawcard for the show, its a who who of contemporart art, including works from Jeff Koons, Andreas Gursky, Richard Phillips, Cindy Sherman, Kehinde Wiley… amongst numerous others in a very impressive line up.

The FLAG Art Foundation is pleased to present “Size DOES Matter”, curated by basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal. This exciting exhibition, on view from February 19, 2010 – May 27, 2010, includes works from international artists exploring the myriad ways that scale affects the perception of contemporary art.

Weighing 320 pounds and standing 7′1″ atop his size 22 shoes, Shaq is one of the most dominant players ever to play in the NBA. Throughout his career, O’Neal has capitalized on his size and strength to overpower opponents for points and rebounds earning him nicknames such as Diesel and Superman. Now Shaq takes the opportunity to reflect on his size with an exhibition boasting works from microscopic to giant pieces that have the ability to dwarf and exaggerate everyone — even Shaq himself.

Artists have readily utilized the element of size. Large and small objects require different approaches, elicit unique responses from their viewer, and reflect the varying purposes in which works of art were meant to serve. This dynamic exhibition will include a variety of mediums that play with scale as a key component in the composition of the artwork. Every work in the show was selected by Shaq himself or is being newly made at his request.

    February 19, 2010 – May 27, 2010 – The Flag Art Foundation
