  • Gilbert & George “The Urethra Postcard Pictures” Exhibition

For their latest exhibition contemporary UK art duo, Gilbert and George, depart from their recognised graphic, photo-montage style to create art with a series of  postcards in “The Urethra Postcard Pictures” at London’s White Cube gallery.

The massive collection of 564 works features postcards arranged in a grid (a continual rectangle of cards, with a single card in the middle) which represents a sexual symbol used by an obscure Victorian occultist, C. W. Leadbetter, to identify himself.   Using the artists’ personal collection of shop bought picture postcards as well as found flyers and cards promoting prostitutes and sexual services on the streets of London.  I have always been somewhat dubious by the message behind Gilbert and George’s work, finding they often put courting controversy over any real message , and supposedly this is something to do with a celebration of British culture and a confrontational exercise in celebrating libertarianism.  From the sound of this collection it probably won’t be any different, however, like most of their work, it will at least be humorous.

Find out for yourself when the exhibition opens this Friday at the Mason’s Yard White Cube Gallery in London.

  • Andy Warhol “Motion Pictures” Screen Tests Website

To celebrate the current Andy Warhol “Motion Pictures” exhibition at MOMA in New York, the world famous museum has created a fun website that allows fans to produce their own Warhol style screen test.

The “Motion Pictures” exhibition focuses on Warhol’s cinematic portraits and non-narrative, silent, and black-and-white films from the mid-1960s. In particular his Screen Tests which revel in his lifelong fascination with the cult of celebrity.  The Screen Tests website builds on the success of social media sites like ChatRoulette to allow anyone to create their own screen test film on the great artist’s iconic style.

Since the rise of social media art critics and commentators have mused just how much Warhol would have loved the technology and the opportunity it provides ever member of society to have their “15 minutes of fame”.  It would be fascinating to see how he would have exploited the popular technology for his artistic ends, but this site offers something of a fitting tribute.

Visit the site here to create your own screentest and take a look at those submitted by others.

On January 20, MoMA’s PopRally will be hosting an event with artist Conrad Ventur, including a viewing of the exhibition and the opportunity for visitors to record their own screen tests.  Let us know if you are planning to attend below.

  • Opening Ceremony Desert Boot

Opening Ceremony’s impact on the contemporary fashion landscape has been quite phenomenal.  As both a retail space and apparel brand they have been at the forefront of marrying high fashion and functional contemporary clothing with streetwear.  We are big fans here at slamxhype, however whilst their high fashion price tags or flamboyant design flourishes may not be to everyone’s taste their footwear seems to strike a chord with everyone.  Perhaps their most popular and enduring shoes are their take on the ubiquitous desert boot.  A semi-formal upper with a chunky rugged sole, these modern classics embody the spirit and look of the brand better than anything else they do.

The Spring/Summer 2011 versions are available now in a range of supple deerskin leather and buttery soft suede.  Rock with a skinny, cropped leg, flecked wool suit for the ultimate Opening Ceremony look.

  • umbro x Aitor Throup Archive Research Project

English sportswear brand Umbro launch Archive  Research Project (A.R.P.), a continuation of their relationship with one of the UK’s most exciting young designers, Aitor Throup.

Following on from their Tailored By Umbro project which saw Throup redesign the iconic England football (soccer to our US friends) strip, A.R.P. sees him tackle Umbro’s wider 87 year heritage with the sport and filter it through his own uniquely modern take on functional design.

The collection will launch in August this year and will feature six unique items.  The first, which can be seen here, is the Ramsey jacket.  Named after the legendary manager of England’s 1966 World Cup winning squad, Sir Alf Ramsey, it features an ergonomic design, taped seams and special created fastening system.

Although Umbro doesnt always get the column inches of their competitors their heritage and performance can’t be denied.  They have also taken some brave steps in working with some of the UK’s best up-and-coming designers.  Their collaboration with Kim Jones helped him build his reputation as a uniquely modern and English talent.  It established his mainstream reputation and helped him earn the enviable position of Creative Director at Dunhill, helping reinvigorate the brand and give it a more streetwise, contemporary edge.  Hopefully this relationship will be as fruitful for Mr Throup.

  • Dickies Oakwood Selvedge Chino

Legendary US workwear brand Dickies continue to mine their archives to produce contemporary fashion wear that stays true to their heritage with the Oakwood Selvedge Chino.

Based on the cut of their 874 work pant, the signature Dickies product (created in 1922, mass produced during WWII and much loved by LA’s Latino gangs and skateboarders worldwide) has been given a premium makeover.  Produced from 100% selvedge cotton, woven on shuttle looms and dyed in Japan, it still features all those much loved features of the 874 – the high waist, perma-crease and machi (crotch inserts), which give the wearer much greater freedom of movement – but with a more luxury twist.

Dickies is a truly iconic brand which has been integral to street culture since it’s inception, so it’s great to see them able to capitalise on the recent trend for high-end, workwear inspired clothing in a way which offers something different without compromising on their hardwearing functionality.    It’s probably best they leave the cashmere and Harris Tweed versions for others to make for now.

As an aside, here is a great video created by Dickies to show just how hard wearing the original 874 workpant is.

  • Paul Smith Jeans Fall/Winter 2010 Collection

Here is the lookbook for the new Fall/Winter collection from Paul Smith Jeans.

It’s always been a mystery to me why Paul Smith doesn’t get more blog love.  Sure some of his ranges can be a bit staid and boring, but for me that is the beauty of this multi faceted label, it offers something for nearly ever man.  No matter if you are an countryside dandy, a pin-striped banker or an urban hipster your bound to find something that suits.

Paul Smith Jeans is probably the most likely to appeal to slamxhype readers though.  It now incorporates the Red Ear denim range and sees the UK label move away from a more mainstream look to a more fashion-led and colourful take on the seemingly never ending heritage and outdoor trend which sits closer to the mainline than the previous incarnations of the diffusion line.  I’m a big fan of this label, it’s fun and always the right side of both style and trend, but most importantly is both masculine and easy to wear.  I already own several of the key pieces. If your passing a Paul Smith store I recommend you pop in and take a look at the hippy inspired embroidered denim shirt and green and purple tartan check, you wont be disappointed.

  • Band Of Outsiders Spring/Summer 2011 Collection

New York Fashion Weeks has seen some of our favourite labels roll out some of their best collection’s yet, and the latest comes from slamxhype favourite Band Of Outsiders with their Spring/Summer 2011 range.

This new collection continues Scott Sternberg’s modern, luxury take on preppy, and relaxed formal evening wear that his brand has become synonymous with.  However, it also sees the brand expand even further into a more casual look with tees, casual blouson and leather jackets, summer parkas and shorts.

I’m a big fan of this label.  It takes inspiration from the currently overused preppy style, without making it feel like 1950s fancy dress to offer  a versatile and easy to wear look, especially if you want something more refined and grown up, but still a little bit special. It offers a more mature take on sports wear, but is still smart enough to wear to the office.  Sadly the price tag and sizing (Band Of Outsiders comes up ridiculously small) make it a prohibitive purchase for many… but that only adds to the uniquness.

  • Wolfgang Tillmans at the Serpentine Gallery

German photographer and former Turner prize winning artist Wolfgang Tillmans has a new exhibition recently opened at the Serpentine Gallery in London.

First coming to fame in the 80s and 90s with his detached, matter of fact documentary style, Tillmans has since refined and widen his purview to become one f the most inspiring and interesting photographers working today.  The Serpentine exhibition features Tillman’s  figurative and abstract work from the last ten years, focusing on his experimentations in photographic techniques and process to reimagine how he sees the world and examine our relationship with modern society.  His playful presentation even extends to how he displays his images in the gallery with photographs placed across tables or seemingly randomly stuck to walls with tape.

The Wolfgang Tillmans exhibition is at the Serpentine Gallery until 19th September 2010.

  • Oi Polloi Ad Campaign

The UK’s Oi Polloi store has just launched their new ad campaign created in conjunction with the guys from the Rig Out magazine and produced by Ogilvy London.

Its not often that a small boutique gets the opportunity to have one of the best ad agencies in the world produce an ad campaign for them, but then Manchester’s Oi Polloi isn’t the usual Boutique. Having set the template for most independent men’s stores across the globe they once again change tack with a campaign that moves away from the hiking/campaign/trekking through the woods aesthetic adopted by most brands to a clever and subtle comment on the Oi Polloi consumer.

From the mind of creatives Andy Bird and Sue Higgs and photographed by Anthony Crook, the ads were shot on location in London and New York the eagle-eyed will be able to spot Oliver Spencer, Angelo Urrutia of Engineered Garments and several other figures from the world of fashion and publishing.

  • Junya Watanabe Spring/Summer 2011 Collection

We saw the new Spring/Summer 2011 collection from Junya Watanabe at Paris this week.  A fresh and summery take on the nautical theme we have seen in collections for quite a few years now.  Its a great look for summer and really wearable by guys of all ages, but I cant help feel a bit disappointed, its a bit too wearable and not that different to the garments we see on the racks from labels such as Albam and Heritage Research, not a bad thing but I do expect a bit more from Junya.  As ever with this label though I’m sure its all about the quirks in the cut, material and details so I will reserve final judgement until I see it up close.

  • Dr Martens Spring/Summer 2011 Collection

These images from the Capsule show in Paris show just how far the successful reinvention of Dr Martens has come.

Refusing the rest solely on heritage designs and the classic 8 hole boots the label continues to seek a fresh and modern approach to footwear by taking a series of popular current styles such as the saddle shoe, suede buck and longwing and adding the iconic air wair sole.  In addition the brand continues to forge ahead with its casual footwear/sneaker hybrid.  Looking forward to seeing these hit stores next year.

  • Witchcraft Spring/Summer 2010 Collection

Witchcraft is a new UK based skate and streetwear label which brings metal back to the scene.

The label is the brain child of UK artist and skater French who’s hand drawn pen and paper metal and occult inspired images never fail to make me reminisce about my school days when i would sit in class and daydream whilst scribbling rock band logos on my school books.   His worked has featured across tv, record labels, clothing and skate decks in the past, but you will probably recognise his work best from his regular collaborations with Dazed and Confused and Vice magazines.

The label also includes work from Paul Parker, Murdoch Stafford and Alan Glass. Check out their rocking preview video and get your cloven hoofs on the shirts and decks at the Witchcraft website.
