Charming Baker “Stupid Has A New Hero” in New York City
May 10th 10, 15:34

It cannot be denied that Charming Baker has tremendous talent. His ability to pair technical skill with a keenly honed sense of humor has resulted in a highly original and engaging style that is gaining a passionate following around the world. As his New York City solo exhibition, which features 16 new oil paintings and 4 limited edition premium fine art prints, draws near, the elegantly off-beat Englishman reveals the story behind one of the pieces, “A Portrait of Michelle With Several Minor Adjustments”.

“Lot of people did portraits of Barack Obama,” he explains. “I wanted to paint Michelle. But I couldn’t get it right. Then I had the idea that I could just cut the face out of the painting, move things round a bit and stick it back together in. So that’s what I did.” Preview several more works from the show below and if you are in New York this Thursday, May 13th, make sure to stop in for the opening reception from 6pm.

“Stupid Has A New Hero – New Paintings by Charming Baker” takes place at the NY Studio Gallery, 154 Stanton St NY 1002. runs from May 14-30. Find out more about Charming Baker at www.charmingbaker.com

Nina Pandolfo at Carmichael Gallery
March 17th 10, 16:45

Nina Pandolfo, one of Brazil’s most exciting emerging contemporary artists, presents Life’s Flavor, her debut US solo exhibition, at Carmichael Gallery this Saturday, March 20. Artwork on display will include mixed media sculpture, works on canvas featuring metal, crystal and light and a piece constructed entirely from Swarovski crystals, complemented by several large, site-specific installations. This is the first exhibition at Carmichael Gallery’s new location on Washington Blvd, Culver City. The exhibition will run through April 18 2010.
Check out some photos of Nina prepping for the show in the gallery and read more about her below.

Born in Tupã, São Paulo in 1977, Nina’s artwork depicts an expansive, colorful landscape populated with sassy wide-eyed girls, their playthings, and their animal friends. These captivating characters and the activities in which they engage are visual embodiments of adult introspection, childhood dreams and fears, and simple, unabashed escapism, themes Nina frequently confronts and explores in her work. From both her canvas and sculptural works emerge a vision of another, more spectacular, world, albeit one with a distinctly Brazilian sensibility.

Nina’s perspective is enhanced by opulently employed symbolism, allowing for multiple readings of each piece. Whilst she is not directed inspired by the contemporary Asian school, certain stylistic features of her work and the technical expertise with which she executes them position her alongside the best practitioners of the Kaikai Kiki school.

Nina is also recognized as Brazil’s leading female exponent of graffiti and street art. She first began to paint on the streets at age twelve and since then has become one of a select group of artists who have eased the transition of this art form into galleries and museums. Nina’s local and international success serves as an inspiration to the generations of young female painters and graffiti artists who follow in her footsteps. She continues to live and work in São Paulo.

Interview | Andreas von Chrzanowski
February 12th 10, 23:59

Andreas von Chrzanowski is one of the most innovative young artists making waves in contemporary German (and international) art. Not only are his pieces totally unique in subject matter and his technique one of the most extraordinary to be found (spray paint used in a manner so precise it’s scary), he prefaces each work by setting up an intense photo shoot. SlamxHype talks to him about these shoots and the next place you can see his work – Signal Gallery in London from February 18.
Your debut London solo is about to open. How are you feeling? You’ve worked in the UK before, but this is the first time the spotlight is only on you.
I’m not sure, but I think I’ll be ok…

Tell me about the new body of work you have created.
My new works are made on different surfaces. Most of them are canvas but there are also fragile wooden panels and cardboard works with stapler covered with duck tape, too. I mixed all three surfaces together to emphasize the character in detail.
Subject matter?
This show features many animals (most of them not living), plus children and an aged man.
Can you talk a bit about the photo shoots you set up and the experiences you had this time around?
For this show, I made the photo shoots all by myself. It was really fun – sometimes easy, but at other times it was hard to arrange and organize things. The most complex photo shoot I did was for the piece with the old man. It was a step beyond for me. It was also not easy to get the armor, the rocking horse and the old man, but my friendship with a guy who works in a film studio helped me a lot.
For me, the most important thing about doing these photo shoots before properly beginning to painting is that they remind me both of past times when I was young and also refresh my perspective on my current life. Nearly everyone in (and around) my pictures is a part of my present or past life.

What’s the story behind the show title, Never odd or eveN, and the concept of your new body of work?
The title is a palindrome, which means you can read it from left to right and from right to left and you get the same two views from different sides (i.e. read the title backwards and it says the same thing). This is the effect you get if you look into a mirror.
The core of this show is my interpretation of Lewis Carroll’s fantastic story Alice Through The Looking Glass. I chose this theme because I like how such traditional characters are reflected in such different ways.
The show title is like the pieces: not easy to explain, never odd or even.
You paint incredible murals in addition to your fine art. Do you plan to paint any in London before or during the show?
Oh yes, I will paint five small walls in London during my preparation of the show. During this time I will live in a warehouse together with a huge artist community, which sounds like an adventure for me. I’m ready for it.

Victor Castillo’s Strange Fruit at Merry Karnowsky Gallery
February 10th 10, 21:45

Chilean-born but Barcelona-based artist Victor Castillo is internationally recognized for the semi-cartoon, semi-surreal visions he paints of the world, infusing each piece he creates with a dark biting wit that is all his own. The acute social commentator is currently showing at Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles alongside fellow Barcelona transplant Miss Van. Their exhibits opened February 6 and remain on view through March 6, so all based in the Los Angeles area are encouraged to check them out. For now, however, here is the beautiful titular piece from Castillo’s exhibit, painted in just one week in the artist’s Los Angeles studio.

Andreas von Chrzanowski | Never odd or eveN | Signal Gallery
January 26th 10, 21:56

German artist Andreas von Chrzanowski stands a head above his peers, both in the mature scope of his subject matter and with a style that merges precise photo realism with an ironic understanding of otherworldly magic. His next solo exhibition, Never odd or eveN, is his first in London and will open at Signal Gallery in association with Campbarbossa on February 18 2010. The exhibit will run through March 6 2010.

Also known as case when painting as a member of respected German graffiti crew Ma’Claim, von Chrzanowski’s work is inimitable. Not one to let his fans and collectors get too comfortable, the artist continues to enthrall by creating one amazing work of art after another, each crafted entirely with spray paint. There is arguably no artist who can wield spray paint with such exquisite precision, and certainly none who does so to such powerful effect.
Andreas von Chrzanowski is going important places so make sure to keep an eye on what is certain to be a stellar London solo debut. Visit his website here.

Aakash Nihalani | On & Off (Often On) | Carmichael Gallery
January 14th 10, 2:20

Aakash Nihalani, one of the world’s most engaging up and coming visual and installation artists, opens his first US west coast solo exhibition at Carmichael Gallery on Thursday, January 21, 2010. Entitled On & Off (Often On), this exciting exhibit, which includes a new series of sculptural works enhanced by one of Nihalani’s trademark site-specific tape installations, signals a significant step in the important young artist’s career. On & Off (Often On) runs through February 18, 2010.

The images above and throughout this article represent highlights from Nihalani’s public and gallery projects in 2009, including Paraphrase at Arario Gallery, New York, BLK River Festival in Vienna, SCOPE Miami and his recent New Delhi series. Additional images can be viewed here. Those used in this article are courtesy Aakash Nihalani, Carmichael Gallery, Jim Kiernan, Noah Kalina and David Ulrich.

Celebrated for his ephemeral modifications of the urban landscape, Nihalani wields an abstract narrative of isometric shapes and flamboyant hues grounded in quiet irony and idiosyncratic precision. The fluidity of the young Brooklyn-based tape specialist’s simple, colorful style, which employs familiar shapes to produce unexpected visuals, initiates an inviting, living dialogue that traverses the chaos of city streets, the white walls of the gallery and the constancy of home.

Nihalani has built a global fan base by selectively placing his artwork on sidewalks and public spaces around New York City, Brooklyn, Vienna, New Delhi and Los Angeles. His squares, rectangles and cubes, which are constructed from strips of instantly identifiable fluorescent tape, give three-dimensional qualities and a new, often humorous, perspective to the windows, doorways, cement pavement, floor tiles, chain-link fences, bricks, building contours and subway spaces within which they are embedded. Nihalani completes all public art pieces on site with little to no advanced planning.

Nihalani’s style readily adapts to the interior gallery space and into individual works of art, thereby escaping its customarily fleeting existence while continuing to fuse his aesthetic and conceptual objectives.

Nihalani has fashioned a visual language all his own. The neon in his work highlights details that might otherwise go unnoticed, while his minimalist patterns form self-contained pockets which encourage examination both within the isolated space and of the world at large. His work often engages the public by creating three-dimensional environments that can be physically entered, transforming passersby or gallery visitors into participants and offering them a momentary escape from daily life.

Nihalani had a prolific year in 2009 and participated in many high-profile exhibits and projects, including:
SCOPE Miami, Carmichael Gallery – Miami FL, USA
Street Installations – Mumbai and New Delhi, India
BLK River Festival, Apocalyptic Colors – Vienna, Austria
Art Inside The Park, Atelier CMS – Jefferson City MO, USA
Tape and Mirrors, Eastern District Gallery – Brooklyn NY, USA
