  • Bumblebee | New LA Street Art

    3843897996_715cc92c07_b

Bumblebee, one of Los Angeles’ most creative and prolific street artists, has been hard at work recently on his trademark outdoor installations. By placing enhanced news boxes in undisclosed locations around the city, Bumblebee adds a new dimension to the art of storytelling. The scene in the box above is “Page 1″. It’s nice to see street art which speaks so strongly to the kid in us all; it doesn’t happen very often.

Read some more about Bumblebee here, then check out “The Story of How Things Came To Bee” for yourself on his flickr.

  • Conor Harrington Mural Uncovered

    conor-harrington-mural-1

Conor Harrington is back in New York City. Well, his mural is, anyway. The New Order Issue 01’s featured artist painted an attention-grabbing mural during his visit to the city for Lazarides’ Outsiders show last Fall.

We were very disappointed when it was announced that the piece had been covered by this illegal advertisement.

    connorharringtonbuffed-731734

Fortunately, our friend Jordan from Public Ad Campaign, provided us with this fantastic update this morning:

“From the look of things, it would seem PublicAdCampaign and Dick Chicken liberated the Conor Harrington mural that had been covered by NPA City Outdoor so callously just weeks before. The mural had for a long time adorned the corner of west 13th street and Washington until recently. It was brought to my attention by Luna Park and Allan Molho that NPA had thrown up a wildposting panel directly on top of the piece. Unable to come to grips with this injustice, I find this newly uncovered mural even more exciting than before.”

  • Boxi Video | Los Angeles

Check out this fantastic video of Berlin-based artist BOXI as he prepared for his LA show, Grey Area, back in April.

Those massive canvases in the background are 106 x 75 in (270 x 190 cm), just in case you were wondering. BOXI certainly likes his canvases big, as evidenced by this photo below. This one wouldn’t even fit through the gallery door!

  • Cherri Wood | A Mirror Distorted

The talented nineteen year old also described her process for creating her new body of work.

“Normally I do not plan out what the concepts of my work are in great detail as that doesn’t come to me naturally. Instead I try to just record feelings that I or anyone experiences. The pieces that I will be showing explore feelings of worry, doubt, and helplessness. With an exception of one, the pieces are in black and white and I decided to work in graphite and ink with some applications of text transfers. Film and music is what I am currently very influenced by as well as dreams.”

  • Guy Denning | Celebrity Will Eat Itself

guy-denning letting go of the entourage

Guy Denning, one of England’s finest urban painters, is set to unveil a new series of oils on canvas at Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art on Thursday, August 6, 2009. While the Bristol-born artist has had major shows throughout the UK and exhibited his work in group shows in California in the past, this is his debut US solo show.

Celebrity Will Eat Itself explores the notion of the eternally solipsistic über-celebrity in all its splendor, hedonism, and pain. With intense brushstrokes and a dynamic use of texture, Denning unravels the darkness inherent in the socially dysfunctional idols of our time and the potentially damaging effects of Hollywood idolatry on both the idols and the idol-worshippers.

Says Denning, “I think this obsession is damaging not only to cultural growth but also to general social well-being and development.”

Denning has long entranced fans with the striking style and ethereal beauty of his androgynous portraiture. Sexual and temporal politics, objectification and isolation are illuminated through a carefully honed juxtaposition of shape and shade. His paintings blend an elegant classical form with an unflinching reflection upon issues that dog contemporary Western society.

Denning’s work resides in public and private collections across the globe, including the UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Canada, USA, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and Greece.

  • FAME Festival | Mark Jenkins and Vhils

We continue to get excited about what’s happening at FAME Festival in Grottaglie. Here are a few pics to illustrate what Mark Jenkins and Vhils, two of our favorite street artists, have been doing. While the local police have already removed Mark’s piece, fair director Angelo Milano reassures us that they will find a way to sneak another one up.

Mark was also recently featured in TIME Magazine’s list of top 10 guerilla artists; while overall this list wasn’t a particularly enlightening or intelligent round up of the scene, the writer definitely wasn’t off when it came to Mark.

Vhils got to work as soon as he set foot in Grottaglie. Here he is outside the airport.

And here is one of his finished street pieces, created by scratching the plaster off the wall. Pretty cool, huh.
