  • Ocular Echoism: The Autonomy of Ellis Gallagher

Ellis Gallagher is set to open his very first solo show next Thursday, July 23rd. The exciting exhibition, entitled Ocular Echoism: The Autonomy of Ellis Gallagher, is presented by the De L’Autonomy Mission and will take place at The Gallery at Collective Hardware in New York City.

    ellis_gallagher_ocular_echoism

    Says the press release:

“In his highly anticipated debut solo exhibition, Ellis Gallagher continues his creative quest in de-objectifying the common street icon and manifests it into the surreal. His sidewalk chalk drawings of the city’s overlooked objects – mailboxes, garbage cans, street signs, bicycles etc. – have become a trademark in street art culture worldwide. OCULAR ECHOISM: THE AUTONOMY OF ELLIS GALLAGHER is collectively the artist’s most ambitious body of work to date and includes limited edition screenprints, original photography, skate decks, fire tags and an indoor New York City street scene installation, garbage included.”

Ellis’ installations look fantastic in person so make sure to head to 169 Bowery (Between Broome Street and Delancey Street) next Thursday if you can.

  • Zevs Arrested in Hong Kong

Zevs is set to open his first solo show at Art Statements Gallery in Hong Kong on July 16th, however it is uncertain whether or not he will be able to attend. Reports have emerged that the Parisian graffiti artist has been arrested after bombing the Armani store with his signature liquidated Chanel motif.

While it will be unfortunate if Zevs misses the opening, the gallery has certainly seized the PR opportunity, featuring an image similar to the one above on their home page.

  • Kokeshi Show | Japanese American National Museum

The Kokeshi Show at the Japanese American National Museum opens today, July 11. The exhibition features kokeshi dolls designed by over 100 internationally recognized artists.

    amy_sol_kokeshi

For those interested in the history of kokeshi:

“Kokeshi originated in the north of Japan in a region called Tohoku, and often were the toys of the children of farmers or souvenirs for visitors to nearby hot springs. Handmade out of wood, they traditionally were characterized by a slim trunk for a body and a larger round head. It is believed Japanese woodworkers made kokeshi as a source of extra income. Faces were often a few simple lines of paint while the bodies were decorated with colorful floral patterns. Like daruma, kokeshi dolls had no arms and legs. As a Japanese folk toy, kokeshi are believed by some to be charms that can help ward off dangers, especially fire. The wood of the mizuki tree is often used for kokeshi and mizuki literally translates as “water tree.”

In the post-World War II era, a new style of kokeshi emerged alongside the traditional: thesosaku (creative). Kokeshi with different shaped heads and bodies, an assortment of colors and even the introduction of hair were designed as part of the sosaku movement. In the sosaku tradition, the only limits were governed by the imagination of each kokeshi designer.”

The show runs through October 4.

  • Frerk and Marc C. Woehr Interview

SLAMXHYPE recently caught up with German street artists Frerk and Marc C. Woehr. We first came across the pair at Art Basel Miami, where they were painting a mural alongside Shepard Fairey during the street art event Primary Flight. Learn a bit more about this awesome duo before their first LA show, which opens at Carmichael Gallery tonight.

    frerkmarcflyer

SlamxHype: Can you tell us a bit about where you are from?

Frerk: I´m from Stuttgart – the city of cars, you know, Benz, Porsche etc.

Marc C. Woehr: I come from a small German town, Neckarsulm, which was just totally dead, you know? I spent a lot of time with my buddies just hanging out on the street. When hip hop made it from the US over to us I got inspired. I started to skate and draw graffiti.

SlamxHype: What did you want to be when you were a child?

    Frerk: Truck driver.

Marc C. Woehr: It has always been my greatest dream to be an artist who can actually make a living from his art.

SlamxHype: How did you get your first breakthrough?

Marc C. Woehr: I had my first breakthrough in 1996 in Heilbronn. It was the largest (back then) underground parking lot to have been painted with spray cans in Baden Württemberg.

Frerk: Then Marc and I were invited to create a painting for the Creative Boat Party during Art Basel last year. The next big step was drawing at Primary Flight/Art Basel Miami with Obey, Blek Le Rat, etc.

SlamxHype: Where do you find inspiration and influence on a daily basis?

Frerk: News. Looking at people and daily life. Walking through the streets. Intensely thinking. For me it’s important to absorb everything – mostly the small and quiet things in life.

Frerk and Marc C. Woehr Collaboration Mixed on Wood

Marc C. Woehr: My little family, my friends and my surroundings give me the strength and the ideas I need. My wife is my greatest critic and my little boy is my biggest fan.

Slamxhype: Anyone you desire to work with/for?

Marc C. Woehr: A big wall together with Shepard and Frerk.

SlamxHype: What is the best gallery in Stuttgart?

Frerk: Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. With Andy Warhol, Otto Dix, Picasso and many more.

SlamxHype: What is your favorite place to visit?

Marc C. Woehr: A little clearing approx. 5 min. from our house. You can see the whole city from up there.

Marc C. Woehr "Stand Alone" Mixed on Wood

SlamxHype: What artists are changing the way we think at the moment?

Frerk: For me it’s Banksy. Yann Arthus-Bertrand. I really like the socio-critical stuff.

Marc C. Woehr: Difficult question – I think we won’t really know who really moved and shook us until time goes by.

SlamxHype: Where do you see the art scene in 10 years time?

Frerk: Hard to say. 10 years ago I was 18. If somebody had told me that ten years later I would be having an exhibition in the US, I would probably have had a fit of laughter. So it‘s such a long time and anything could happen.

    Marc C. Woehr: Handcuffs.

  • Vhils | Scratching The Surface Exhibition at Lazarides Rathbone

Vhils, aka Alexandre Farto, has just opened a spectacular show at Lazarides Gallery Rathhbone. The young Portuguese artist has taken his unique portraiture to another level with this new body of work, as evidenced by Ian from Wallkandy’s photos.

Here’s a little excerpt from the press release.

“By re-contextualising the urban setting, Vhils explores and questions the many dimensions of cities and their inhabitants in a series of playful works. Focusing on the people that inhabit the artist’s multicultural environment Vhils draws attention to the layers that underlie it. A set of portraits of unknown faces use unconventional techniques and materials; acid and bleach eat into surfaces to expose the layers beneath, the act of destruction becoming an act of creation, posters that exemplify a consumer society are subtly converted into objects poignantly celebrating humankind.”

Scratching the Surface will remain on display through August 1.

  • Word To Mother | Fifty24SF

UK artist Word To Mother is set to open his first US solo, Young Mind, Old Soul, at San Francisco’s Fifty24SF Gallery this evening, July 2. The show will feature a selection of works on mixed media and found wood, as well as a limited edition print. This is an exciting opportunity to see the rising star’s work in person so if you are in SF tonight, make sure to stop by to check it out, plus meet WTM who has flown all the way over the Atlantic for the event.

    picture-118

The tone of WTM’s new body of work is slightly more subdued than what we saw at his sell-out show at Stolenspace back in March, emphasizing the meditative nature and themes of nostalgia and simplicity that prevail in the pieces.

In response to the show’s title, the artist responds, “For me, the idea of having a Young Mind and an Old Soul is about retaining the freedom of youth, the creative and unrestricted energy to continue to question things and to educate yourself, whilst living with a respect and understanding of the past.”
