Juxtapoz x Grotesk June 2009 Cover
May 15th 09, 12:50

This sort of just speaks for itself. Grotesk specially did this cover work for Jux’ June 2009 issue. One of my favorites we have ever done. Used a little of his lettering, a perfect, timeless cover image from one of the best artists around, a good friday.
Joey Garfield did a nice job in Portland with fine artist Chris Johanson, and the MQ portrait that Sam Bassett took was on point. Video game, 3D, and fine artist Coro gave us a little San Francisco in June, Skinner did some bizarre portrait with his neighbor (in a very entertaining way), and CR Stecyk did a nice portrait of Steve Olson. Thank you to Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant and Chronicle Books for helping out as well. And Jamel Shabazz as well.
I’ve always been a really big fan of Grotesk, but now working closely with him proves he is the real deal. Perfect cover.

Usugrow’s SHINGANIST @ FIFTY24SF Gallery
May 11th 09, 10:41
Made a little stop off at FIFTY24SF Gallery on Thursday night to see Usugrow’s curated show, “Shinganist.” Really good work. The show features the work of USUGROW, MOZYSKEY, TOSHIKAZU NOZAKA, BENE, and JUN KANEKO.
That’s the nice lettering on the outside…. that is my lady, me, and my good buddy Jeff, who now resides in the Lower Haight.
Usugrow… signing a lady’s arm.
Mike Giant getting his notebook signed by Mr Usugrow. Nice to see Mike back in SF. And, of course, Robin Williams was at the show, and because I forgot my real camera, I couldn’t get the old iPhone in full gear to shoot the man as he walked by me. He looked good, slick in all black.

Juxtapoz #100
May 6th 09, 10:51

Juxtapoz is officially 100 issues old, give or take an Erotica issue or three back in the day. But yes, 100 issues old, and we even have a poster included in each issue that has a map of all 100 covers.
Raymond Pettibon on the cover was a clincher, and we wanted to do something a little special/different, so we went with an early ’80’s look, with a great line, “I never want to die” on the front. On the subscriber-only cover, we went with a 2008 piece of Pettibon’s, to give it the simultaneous retrospective/future-looking vibe. Deep thinking. Happy with the results.
Spike Jonze is in, too. Took some time out of his schedule and all the “Where the Wild Things Are” activities to be in. Andy Mueller and Porous Walker made it easy on us.
Camille Rose Garcia, Glen E Friedman, Kevin Ancell, and Coop, all big thanks. Stecyk, good pose.
Sam Bassett, our NYC photo editor, took some amazing shots on his California tour. Sam, nothing like a beach in Half Moon Bay to enjoy the Northern California coast, right? And, Estevan Oriol, our LA photo editor, gave Coop the proper treatment.
At the end of day, all the pieces came together, and it looks good. No sweat.
Stay tuned for a Brooklyn surprise in #101.

Thank you Porous Walker for making me part of your show
May 5th 09, 9:34

Porous Walker, for his show at Receiver Gallery in San Francisco, made an ode to me. In the form of a pie. I don’t know what to think. I just say thank you.

Matt Groening and Parra
April 7th 09, 16:05

I got to meet Matt Groening on Saturday night… he is on the left here with one of the Jux’ founders, Greg Escalante. I made a quick trip to LA this past weekend to work a couple of stories out and to meet up with the great Dutchman, Parra, for his show at HVW8. I also stopped by Copro Nason Gallery to see Greg, and Matt was there, too. Matt Groening is definitely a hero of mine, and he has some really good stuff to say about the magazine, so my weekend was spent on a high note.
Parra’s show was great, too. Glad he let me stop by and catch up just as he was working out the final preparations for his solo show, “Is That a Gun Dear Friend?” at Heavyweight.

This last image was my favorite piece Parra did at his show. Perfectly Californian. Thanks to Tyler from HVW8 and Parra for taking time to hang out. Come to SF Parra!

I can’t believe my parents let me watch/attend this
March 27th 09, 9:34
I’m competing with another blogger at a different location, because after an exhausting search on YouTube, I found this clip. I can’t believe my parents let me watch this awesome, awesome crap. I think “The Wrestler” got me thinking about where Brutus the Barber Beefcake, The Warrior, The Bushwackers, Macho Man, The Big Boss Man, Zeus, Million Dollar Man, Mr Perfect, The Mouth From the South Jimmy Heart, The Hitman, etc, etc, are now. A-Rod was using their dealer now for a few years wasn’t he, that’s for sure.
It must have been 1990, my dad took me to the Cow Palace in SF, pre-Sharks (if you live in the Bay, you know the Cow Palace, and you know the venue is not being used for much anymore but motorcycle conventions and over-the-top appliance clearance sales that last an entire weekend. Its not a hot-bed. And in 1990, it wasn’t happening either. But there, in my 9-year old mind, it was heaven. I was going to a weeknight WWF event. Have you ever been to one of those things? Basically, “The Wrestler” got it down 100% (Aronofsky must be commended for it). Grown men, throwing beer and profanities at refs prior to the fights (and they are fake refs, really low-level, D-League actors, poor guys), all the pomp, actors in costume and fully on the ‘roids throwing themselves around. There might have been a steel cage match, I can’t remember, and it was really low level WWF guys, too, not Hulk, Warrior, Andre the Giant (before having a posse). I think I got Bushwackers, maybe not, who cares.
When Monday Night Raw came around, and the primarily Saturday afternoon programming ended, the budgets got larger and we were left with Hulk going bad-guy, The Undertaker, The Rock, Stone Cold, basically a bunch of less talented actors who could not hold Macho’s jock. I sort of miss those days. Low-budget, bizarre, middle class entertainment. I loved it. Not sure my mom was too happy that pops was taking me to a wrestling event, but it was some of my most odd memories as a child. So, this memory kept me up about an hour last night, trying to piece together epic WWF battles……
And Jesse Ventura, the former Minnesota governor who has been used recently in anti-Obama conspiracy film, does the color commentary. Draw your conclusion. America….

April Juxtapoz out now, Jeff Soto on the cover
March 26th 09, 11:11

We just wrapped up issue #100, but just this week, issue #99 with Jeff Soto on the cover is hitting newsstands. Things move so fast month to month that it feels like we worked on this one a year ago, but Soto’s work was jumping off the rack at my neighborhood Barnes n’ Noble, which brings it all back. Chloe Early, Augor, Word to Mother, Stelios Faitakis, and Balkrishna Arts (Bollywood poster artist, hand-painted style, the man is insanely talented) all are in this one.
I don’t want to hype myself too much (even though I have a blog where I talk about the things I do, so I guess I get to get high on my own supply regardless), but my interview with Stelios Faitakis turned out quite good in my opinion. Stelios, or Bizare One in his graffiti days, is an Athens, Greece based fine artist, who has been making Byzantine meets graffiti meets apocalypse meets WTO riots meets Russian Icon meets Renaissance style art recently, and he really let me get some good stuff out of him. The gold is the key. And he doesn’t like hip-hop in ‘09.
Go buy it if you got $5.
And if you haven’t seen this, you should. Spike Jonze is in our next issue, and from the looks of this trailer, a good 2009 for Spike is on the works:

Camille Rose Garcia visits Jux . . .
March 6th 09, 17:29
Last week, Camille Rose Garcia came down from the way up north portion of California, to visit us here at Juxatpoz. A photo shoot ensued in Moss Beach. If you don’t know Camille, for being at the top of her art game and being a friend to the magazine for years, she couldn’t have been nicer, more prepared, and willing to take some time to get her portrait done right. This was part of the scenery. We are putting the final touches on our 100th issue. 15 years of Juxtapoz. Not bad in this era, me thinks. Camille is one of the artists who will be part of the editorial action. There are some other names as well . . . Spike Jonze, Raymond Pettibon, Glen Friedman, among some others.

Chaz Bojorquez is a stand-up guy, and some things you should read
March 3rd 09, 12:03
In working with a bunch of different artists each month to get Jux together, Chaz Bojorquez is one stand-up guy. His work is on the cover of our March 2009 issue, and Saber really came through with a great interview of the LA-legend. Also, D*Face, Risk, Dan Witz, and Mr Jago are in the issue, all great in their own right. And our contributing editor, Joey Garfield, came through big with a very great DZINE feature and photo. That interview is one of my personal favorites over the past two and a half years. In fact, read all of Joey’s features that he does for us (Swoon, David Ellis, Cody Hudson, Gonz, WK Interact, now DZINE, some more upcoming), always gets a good interview out of people.
I’m also going to take this opportunity to say that if you have not bought/stolen/downloaded/file-shared Caribou’s “Andorra,” from 2007, you are missing out. Its a little old now I know, but I revisited it recently, and its on repeat.
Also will take this opportunity to tell people to read two books of fantastic non-fiction goodness. One, “The Great Upheaval: America and the Birth of the Modern World 1788-1800,” written by Jay Winik. Best $10 I ever spent . . . George Washington, Louis XVI, Catherine the Great, Napoleon, Thomas Jefferson, French Revolution, American Revolution, Ottomans . . . an amazing book. The world as we know it began in these 12 years. AND, Doris Kearns Goodwin’s “Team of Rivals” on Lincoln and his Cabinet . . . just started it. Love it. Must read for every involved American. And the Rahm Emanuel profile in the New Yorker this past week, great stuff. So much good reading out there at the moment. Shit may be hitting the fan, so might as well read your way though it.

Deerhunter + Noise Pop = A Good Tuesday Night
March 2nd 09, 15:24
Got invited by the good people of San Francisco’s Noise Pop Festival to attend Deerhunter’s opening night set at Mezzanine. First off, Microcastle, Deerhunter’s 2008 album, was one of my favorites of the year, because I like a bit of classic pop mixed with feedback and delay. I recommend a listen. Actually, pick up Cryptograms while at it. That is great album as well…. anyway…. I’m into it, and so are most kids with black rim glasses. I’m not original, but I don’t care.
The best part, besides sitting in the back and still being close to the action, is that Wolfgang’s Vault filmed the set, so you can watch too. If you listen closely, you can hear me yell, “Whoo!” Thank you to Jordan and Kip.
