NYC travels
January 26th 09, 14:29
Was wandering around the West Village on Friday with my girlfriend, and ran into the Aristotle of Street Photography, Ricky Powell, whom I have had the honor to write a feature on in the magazine back in 2007. We caught up for a bit over some coffee, and he let me pose with him for a minute. Ricky has a column at TheCitrusReport.com that I always enjoy, and check when the Beasties’ 20th anniversary Paul’s Boutique drops, ’cause there has got to be some fine shots from the era a la Ricky. Nice seeing you, sir.
Just got from NYC where Scion was putting on their Scion Easy 10 2008 film screening. Juxtapoz, Giant Robot, Vice, RE:Up, Theme, and some other mags were involved in getting young filmmakers together to make the film of their choice, and the screening was this past Thursday at the Tribeca Cinemas. It was a hectic scene; good to, because that means a lot people came out to see some up-and-coming talent. Alex Tarrant, Jux’ filmmaker of choice, made a great film with artists David Choong Lee and Brian Barneclo as the stars. Good stuff. Joey Garfield, one of Jux’ contributing editors, made a film as well. Nice meeting Eric from Giant Robot, too, been a huge fan of all his work over the years Thank you to Malbon Farms for getting Alex and I settled.

WK Interact on Juxtapoz’s January 2009 issue
December 23rd 08, 11:37
The new January Juxtapoz should be out now, or at least I saw it at my neighborhood Borders the other day, so I guess that means I can green light and post this. WK Interact is on the cover, with a good interview by Joey Garfield. And Ian Francis is featured (if you don’t know him, look him up now, the guy is unstoppable.

That is Sam Flores on our new December cover
December 5th 08, 16:07
That is pretty. We have been doing some really good covers recently, but this one shows that if you make something specific for a cover, it looks mighty good. Sam, good one. Corey Arnold and I had a chat in this issue as well, which equates to goodness as well. Alaskan fishing is dangerous, by the way.
Also, just got back from London for Herbert Baglione’s opening at Lazarides Gallery. Thank you to all the fine folks at Lazarides… I remember something about going to Amy Winehouse’s pub, but a certain phone service that is connected w/apples was not cooperating. Photos to come.

TV on the Radio play a good live show
November 11th 08, 10:14
On Sunday night (maybe the worst night to ever schedule a concert, work that out people), I took an evening to enjoy TV on the Radio’s San Francisco tour stop @ the Warfield. I don’t want to become a critic or anything, but its worth the $25 admission to hear “Wolf Like Me” and “Staring at the Sun” live. I’m not even a heavily into TV on the Radio, I don’t worship them like many in the crowd, but I’m a fan, and their new album, “Dear Science,” made me a believer. My call: buy it that album, and go to YouTube to find some live clips from TVOTR….. but that Sunday thing, not a good thing.

…Went to Paul Insect’s show @ FIFTY24SF Gallery
November 7th 08, 15:50
Paul Insect had a solo show at FIFTY24SF last night in San Francisco. I got to meet Paul last year when he was the cover story for an issue of Jux, and been a huge fan of his work since. I missed him on this trip though, but I caught the show.

Street art creeps into ARTnews
October 30th 08, 18:43
Its always interesting when street art gets covered in magazines like ARTnews, that probably don’t drop names like Swoon, Barry McGee, Os Gemeos, or ESPO that often. So, I found this article pretty interesting that was printed in the November issue of ARTnews (oddly, we do contemporary African art in Juxtapoz, and they do a piece on Swoon). I think Mr Deitch of Deitch Projects always has some good things to say . . .

Went to Robert Williams show in Oakland the other night
October 21st 08, 18:24
Robert Williams, the founder of Juxtapoz, is part of a show called “LA Paint” at the Oakland Museum right now, and I went out to the opening a few weeks ago, and back to hear Robert’s lecture the next week.
Both Robert’s work and the Date Farmers (probably one of my favorite tandems) was on display. The Date Farmers really owned their section.

The last Sparks x Jux x Upper Playground Event this Saturday in Phoenix
October 1st 08, 22:25
The last Sparks x UP x Juxtapoz “Ignite What’s Next” Tour stop will be in Phoenix at the Marquee Theater this Saturday. Part of me wishes I could go, although the last time I had a few Sparks, well, it was hectic. But Killer Mike at the event in Atlanta? Forget about it, that must have been a real show.
