ellesse unveils LCF winning designs and new deadline for the Create Tennis Art competition
ellesse is now unveiling the results of a competition organised in collaboration with the London College of Fashion. The brand commissioned students from BA (Hons) Fashion Contour and BA (Hons) Active Sportswear to design a garment that reflects the brand’s heritage in tennis – and the results are rather impressive! The winner of the first prize is Eva Lai who is studying BA (Hons) Fashion Contour. Her design is a re-working of one of the brand’s most iconic products, the tennis dress. The contour of the bodice echoes the curves of a tennis ball while the white lines of the tennis court sculpt the body. Layers of pleats reveal the rich heritage of the brand from 1959 to the present day whilst capturing the energy of the sport and movement of tennis players.

Second prize winner was Diana Auria Harris who also studies on BA (Hons) Fashion Contour. Diana’s design, a structural dress with an exaggerated silhouette was inspired by the ellesse logo.

Third prize was won by Alex Green whose design was influenced by futurism and the work of Hussein Chalayan.

The winning designs will feature on http://www.ellesse.com/50thAnniversary/ and will be showed during the ellesse 50th anniversary party in Rome in July 2009. Eva will attend the event in Rome as part of her prize and also receive £1,500 and a fully paid 3 month design-based work placement.
You too could be part of the ellesse 50th anniversary celebrations, win €4,500 and be sent to the ellesse 50th anniversary event where your work will be on display. An opportunity you shouldn’t miss…
All you have to do is create a piece of art or design to commemorate the ellesse 50th anniversary inspired by the brand’s Italian heritage and sporting roots in tennis. The categories for the competition range from fashion and textiles, right through to fine art, sculpture, street art, graphics and digital. Deadline is May 10th and all the details and application form can be found on http://www.ellesse.com/50thAnniversary/

CREATE TENNIS ART…
April 24th 09, 0:39
More…
As you know form previous posts ellesse is celebrating its 50th anniversary with the design competition CREATE TENNIS ART and with uber cool illustrator and typographer Si Scott as part of the jury. The iconic Italian sportswear brand is now unveiling 2 new collaborations, with textile print superstar Kate Gibb and Greek animation genius Babis Alexiadis. Two great inspirations to enter the competition!
Kate is an internationally renowned silk screen artist having worked for the likes of Dries Van Noten, Stussy, Adidas, Virgin Records and EMI Recordings. You might recognise her signature style from her ongoing collaboration with ‘The Chemical Brothers’ which started with the cover of the album “Surrender” (remember “hey boy, hey girl….”?).

Kate was influenced by vintage images of tennis players for the silk screen print she created for ellesse. Applying layer upon layer of colour to these original images, she developed a unique print that captures the innovative qualities of the ellesse brand and the sense of tradition in her work as a silk screen artist.
Babis’ work focuses mostly on short animations and video art productions; it is recognised for being predominantly hand-drawn with a limited digital input. Babis has created pieces for the likes of BBC Big Screen West Midlands, the Midlands Arts Centre and Friction Arts and directed two music videos. In 2008, he won the first prize in the “Your Point of View” competition run by fashion brand BSB. He has also won the public choice award in the Micropolis international film festival in Athens, Greece.
The piece he created for the ellesse 50th anniversary consists of a quirky animation featuring hand-stitched characters which took over 100 hundred hours to create. Babis used a new technique and adopted a unique palette of water colours to illustrate the brand’s colourful history.
The deadline to enter the competition is May 10th and all you have to do is create a piece of art or design to commemorate the ellesse 50th anniversary inspired by the brand’s Italian heritage and sporting roots in tennis.
You could win €4,500 and be sent to the ellesse 50th anniversary event this summer in Rome where your work will be on display. An opportunity you shouldn’t miss… The categories for the competition range from fashion and textiles, right through to fine art, sculpture, street art, graphics and digital.

FEIYUE
April 17th 09, 6:46
So there I was walking through Portobello & then turned off & went into the Garbstore just to have a look…I am going to buy something from there soon…there is just too much to chose from.
Anyhow…this day I am taking a look at the shoes, & I come across this label FEIYUE (pronounced fay-you-ay). While many people are wearing canvas shoes, these were a little different & they were in Garbstore, which says something as Mr Paley on plays with the best.
So I look, & think hey would like to know more…well as it turns out I found out.
Feiyue originated in China in the 1920’s & in 2006 was rediscovered by a bunch of French sneaker enthusiasts & reintroduced to the world.
Since that time they have had some colabs with the French Luxury House CELINE

Also with French Artists Steph Cop

As well as Hong Kong Based artist NSBQ

I have to say my personal flavour are the High Top Leather styles…there is something quite stylish & yet subtle about them.

& Then there is the classic Lo which I can see many liking…& as the girl in Garbstore said, ‘…are very comforatble…’

Well if they tickle your fancy, you can grab a pair at Garbstore, & Oi Poloi…but for a full listing & more info, go to www.feiyue-shoes.com

50 YEARS OF ELLESSE & ‘CREATE TENNIS ART’ COMPETITION
April 9th 09, 6:05

The Italian sportswear label ellesse is 50 years old this year & they contacted me to do a little blogging, but more than that to be a judge on the panel deciding the winner of their 50th anniversary competition ‘Create Tennis Art’…I said yes…so here come the Judge…sorry, could not resist that one.
ellesse is unjustly overlooked on the blogs, but they played a big part in the style of sportswear in the ‘80s & ‘90s…& recently saw a colab with Eley Kishimoto that took to the catwalks in 2005. I have a soft spot for ellesse because it takes me back to my ‘Casual’ days when I was a teenager & ellesse was the exclusive label to have if you wanted to be cool in school, party & on the football terrace. Those were the days.

There are pockets of that style coming back & who knows, perhaps ebay will suddenly be inundated with vintage ellesse…I would not mind one of the old Ferrari Fi uniforms that they used to do, or perhaps the NY Cosmos kit…we forget how big ellesse really are & how much they covered the sports of the rich & famous back in the day.
In Tennis alone they had Chris Evert & a young new comer called Boris Becker…man I even remember sporting a pair of ellesse tennis shorts thinking that it was a cool look for the summer…hey then it probably was.

Anyway, I digress…I know you readers love a bit of history & I have enjoyed running down memory lane, but this is about now, the future & bringing ellesse back to the forefront…get a little more of that Italian swagger back into the game of sportswear…bring some demand so my kids can tell the same stories of their quest for ellesse of now…
so 50 years of ellesse….here is the brief of the competition :
ellesse celebrates 50 years of sport and fashion with a design competition

A WORD OR 2 ON TRENDS
March 27th 09, 3:29

1stly can I apologise for my lack of posts here…my life has taken precedent & things are getting back to some sort of normal way forward…I will one day do an open hearted post on what I have been going through in the last few months…I digress.
Well I am back & hope to be writing a hell of a lot more stuff for all of you to see, read, laugh, take the piss out of & comment on…
I am starting with a story of a response I got for a friend of mine to an article I submitted for the guest column in Drapers, the Fashion Trade magazine here in the UK…I used to write for it, but shit just got in the way…& like here I am clawing my way back.
My article was on ‘Trends & the Bottom Line’, how trends effected the profits of compnaies & how much trend anaylisis can be utilised in todays climate to make more money for a clothing/fashion company, wether it be wholesaler or retailer.
As I have started to do I sent it to a friend of mine Sarah Feeney who owns 15Minutes Pr in London…a nice company, going some where big…plug, plug, plug…hey that is what i do right.
Anyway, she came back with some excellent responses that have lead me to investigate & write more on the topics hse high lighted…
Here are her responses, & take note the lady was on a train…she usually hits you off with one line bombs…but time was n her hands…
‘Yeah, I think its wicked. Cottage industry, bespoke. More love, one on one, its a trend in itself that the trend spotters should also have spotted. Who are the industry trend spotters? Who predicts where the industry will go…. The future manufactures to work with, the right accounts and shops, the new marketing messages?
Not just colours fabrics and ‘waist coats will be big next season’
Shouldn’t this be included within the service? Perhaps not…
As your audience is half buyers, perhaps relate it back to how it fits in with the brands they sell in their shops? How their product offering could be improved by a bespoke trend service. The real bottom line, will it help them shift more clothes in the hard economic times or not?’Good I think…made me think a little bit more about Trends etc…
Oh & if you want to read what I wrote…get Drapers
Be Well.
