• NSW x Stussy 30th anniversary

  By now I think most people have seen the news on the upcoming NSW and Stussy colab project. This is definitely one that I’ve worked closely on and just to avoid any confusion or disappointment the Blue color “Mysto” all courts are a special version that will only be sent to members of the Stussy “Tribe” as well as some Nike friends and family.  In reference to the original Tribe jackets that were sent to close friends, we decided to pay homage to that spirit with this blue canvas version.

• LDN…Going back to my roots

  I just returned to Tokyo from having spent a week in London. Normally I pop over there from Tokyo on business but this time it was a holiday of sorts. Having lived there for 37 years of my life there’s always a ton of friends to see and at least this time I had the chance to see quite a few..as ever there’s always something happening in this city.

  I was born pretty close to Mile End which technically makes me a “cockney”…

  I met up several times with Andrew Bunney. We worked together for several years and he always has his eyes open, constantly showing and turning me onto different things every time I see him.. http://blog.honeyee.com/andrew/

  he took me to Idea Books which is a pop up store on St Martins Lane in Covent Garden, stocking some very interesting Pop culture books and magazines that are out of print and second hand. They also have a concession in Dover Street Market.

  We spent Sunday evening at Ronnie Scotts in Soho, a London Jazz institution where I also used to DJ with Michael Kopelman of Gimme 5 about 15 years ago also on Sunday nights. The place has changed quite a bit and isn’t the rough and ready place I remember but now there’s a bit of comfort and a good soundsystem in the upstairs bar.   On the theme of music, I popped over to Michael Kopelman’s house to hang out and listen to some tunes. He’s recently upgraded his already amazing soundsystem. All I can say is it sounds as good as the equipment looks.

  the timing was perfect to be in London for another good old friend’s project that he’s been working on for some time now. The man in question is James Lavelle and he curated the excellent “Daydreaming” exhibition at the Haunch of Venison gallery in Picadilly. The show featured a hoset of artists from various mediums responding to musical tracks provided by Lavelle’s Unkle. I take my hat off to James for an really amazing show and the sheer number of people who passed through this last weekend were a testament to the fact that this was a great success.

  Lets get the old band back together…..

  Tim Goldsworthy, original Mo wax and Unkle, ex DFA, back from a 10 year stint in NYC,  now working with Massive Attack and living in Bristol. James “Unkle” Lavelle, and Pablo current Unkle producer plus myself.  The core of the old Mo Wax crew…..it was just great to see these guys again after all the years that have passed.

  Finally, Andrew Bunney took me to see Derek who runs Lewis leathers and I had a jacket made. I’ve known Derek from around Soho for years as we always used to eat at the top Pizza spot in town Malletti which was our favorite lunch destination. • LA for the weekend

  Headed down to LA for the weekend after being in Portland for a couple of days of Nike WHQ action.

  it was a prefect chance to be hang out or randomly meet friends old and new. The lovely Joy Yoon, fellow Slam Hype blogger  amongst many other talents, looked after me again and we had a mutual friend, the Hair stylist Johnnie Sapong in town working on a project. I’ve known Johnnie for years back in London so it was great to Link up.

  a good night to roll around as there was the Boogie photographic opening at the Carmichael gallery. Saw Eric Hze in the house as well as Estevan Oriol then we headed over to the Dennis Hopper retrospective that was Jeffrey Deitch’s first big show as director of MOCA. Well worth the trip and a good night to be in town.

• The Voice of the Ghetto StayHigh 149

  I just received a great new book documenting the life of legendary graffiti writer and pioneer Stay High 149. This book chronicles the life of the writer who many cite as having used the first “logo” in graffiti writing, a craftily modified version of the classic stick man which was the signature of the 60’s TV show “The Saint” played by Roger Moore.

  The book was put together by Sky Farrell and Chris Pape working directly with the artist to bring the entirety of his unique story to life for the first time.

  I had the fortune to meet Sky last year (who is an artist herself) and it’s clear that this is the work of one artist inspired by another, albeit coming from very different backgrounds and styles of work.

  a must read for all lovers of graf and NYC street  culture.

  In recent years I’ve tired of Hip Hop for the most part. I guess it’s a young man’s genre and what with the commercialism and mainstream nature of most of the output, one of the most consistent artists has been Jay Z. I like his take on things and being closer in age he still has something to say to me, as well as seeming to capture the imagination of the youth. I think this short film is well put together and show’s why he’s still relevant when so many fall by the wayside.

  I’d been waiting for leica to release the X1 digital compact camera for quite some time and finally I was able to pick it up from their Ginza store last Saturday.

  Looking very much like a smaller version of the M8 and being described by some as a D-Lux 4 (which I had until it was stolen) on steroids. There have been various reviews some good some bad, mainly the bad ones were complaining about the price, but I can say that so far I’m pretty blown away by the crispness of the shots, the ease of use and the quality of images taken in low light. I was bitten by the Leica bug a couple of years ago with the D-Lux 3 and the X1 has only dragged me further down that path.

  This first shot is insanely sharp when you enlarge the image. after seeing this I knew the camera was serious.

  Tokyo music pioneer Kan Takagi http://blog.honeyee.com/ktakagi/ came out to meet with us for dinner as our old friend James Lavelle was in Tokyo to promote his upcoming new record.

  It was great to see James. We met when he was just 18 years old and was working at Honest Jons records in London. I lived down the street and had lost a flatmate so needed a new one. James moved in and was just starting Mo Wax records. Pretty soon after I started working for him at the label along with Tim Goldsworthy. It was a great period and we had some amazing experiences during that time as the label grew. lots of traveling, learning how to run a label on the fly,  staging art exhibitions…….etc. We’ve now known each other for nearly 20 years and had lost touch for the past 3 or 4, so it was fantastic to catch up and see James back with new material, lots of exciting projects and personally seeming really happy. Check out the new Unkle album coming soon.
