  • Uniform Experiment 2008 Autumn/Winter Collection

A few days ago we gave you a small preview on things to come from Uniform Experiment, now the entire fall/winter 2009 collection is officially online. Formed through a collaboration between two of the most influential people in the street fashion industry, Hirofumi Kiyonaga of Soph.net and Hiroshi Fujiwara. The labels philosophy is to provide a range for the now-grown ups who still have ‘streetwear’ blood running through their veins. While the previous collection was largely composed of monochromatic white-collar styled pieces. This new collection nicely reflect the philosophy including mature and classically tailored pieces mixed with some young and bold colors. The result is an impressive collection that will likely appeal to a wide range of fashion goers. We’ll definitely expect alot more great things from this label in the future. Check out the images below. Or check out their full collection on the website here.

  • Insiders, Outsiders & The Middle Exhibition Preview

Insiders, Outsiders & The Middle is an some insane installation at the massive 4,500 square foot Giant Robot space. At Giant Robot, the definition of art ranges from straight contemporary painting to sculpted figures, which were considered action figures just a few years ago. This exhibition celebrates not the disparate mediums, but the divergent mindsets of artists–as well as the gray areas and we have captured some great images as a preview and I must admit to be impressed with the size and quality, work like the piece entitled Rubix Cubism stand out.

Insiders are artists who work so hard in front of their computers that they don’t leave their chairs long enough to hang their pieces on walls. More often, their art is found onscreen, in print, and on T-shirts. Adrian Johnson is an example from the U.K., with a retro drawing style inspired by children’s books. The other Insiders are from Japan. Noriko Ashino runs the A Piece of Design firm, and specializes in a variety of disciplines including character design and graphics. Sometimes known as ZariganiWorks, the duo of Taro Mukasa and Yoshitane Sakamoto are responsible for the infamous Suicide Bomb Button, have created the Kore Janai Robo (which has gone from handmade wood figurines to vinyl characters with a TV show), and freelance design toys, characters, and products.

Outsiders include Space Invader, a street artist from Paris who makes his mark on walls around the world and calls each tiled piece an "invasion." He painstakingly documents each one before it gets ripped down—either by city workers or collectors—and publishes his work in books and maps. Kami is revered as a graffiti legend in Tokyo and has successfully transitioned from the streets to art galleries. His pieces often resemble flowing water.

And then there’s The Middle. The original work of Kyoto-based Shinya Yamamoto has been found in many exhibitions as well as the drum set of Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley. Part Basquiat and part left-brain madness, his style is free flowing and dreamy. Nao Harada, proprietor of the Wrecks clothing line, sketches, draws, and paints with no regard to the meaning of art. He rides around on his BMX leaving stickers and tags around Tokyo. The lone American in the group, Ed Trask, is from Virginia. He tours constantly as the drummer for the veteran punk band Avail. Through painting, he recalls and reinterprets the slices of Americana that he sees on the road. Although there is no obvious correlation between the artists, they form a powerful cross-section of creative forces that are physically active with their art. They belie the image of the stationary artist and pose the question of how they will co-exist in a restrained gallery setting.

The opening is today August 2 at the Scion Installation L.A. Gallery, 3521 Helms Ave. (at National), Culver City, CA and the show will run until August 23. Dedicated to fostering independent artistic expression, the Scion Installation L.A. Gallery is a space that allows artists to explore their creative visions, visit www.scion.com/space and make an effort to check this out.

  • Short Documentary Film On Persian Hip Hop artist Reveal

Here is an interesting piece about the Iranian hip hop artist Mehrak Golestan, aka Reveal, who is actually the son of the late famous photo-journalist Kaveh Golestan. In this piece, he shares with us his story of moving to London from Tehran while his father worked for the Times during the Iran-Iraq War. His music became all about revealing the truth and was heavy impacted by his father’s depiction of media censorship in Iran. With the current ban on rap music in Iran, there is much controversy on the intention of the music. For Mehrak, Persian rap isn’t about politics; it’s about the identity of being Persian in a post-revolution Iran.

This short documentary film is most definitely some well worth viewing with this fascinating story from Current.

  • Stanley Kubrick’s ‘Boxes’ Documentary

Boxes is a documentary looking at the legacy of stanley Kubrick through thousands of boxes filled with thousands of photos, letters, notes, newspaper clippings, meticulously sorted and documentated to tell a story of a film genius.

"Twelve years ago author and documentary filmmaker Jon Ronson received a call from a man named Tony. Tony was interested in obtaining a copy of Ronson did a documentary about the Holocaust for his employer, whose name he did not wish to reveal. After some cajoling Ronson finally extracted the gentleman’s name. Turns out it was Stanley Kubrick.

That was the last Ronson heard until a few years after the legendary director’s death when Tony called and asked if he would like to come poke around Kubrick’s mansion. What Ronson found there was a cinemaphile’s wet dream: thousands of boxes containing thousands of meticulously organized photos, memos and letters, years of Kubrick’s career minutely categorized and filed. Ronson would spend five years sifting through them before they were carted off to their new home at the University of the Arts London.

What emerges is a portrait of a man who, to the outside observer, seems as if he was imprisoned by his obsessive need to manage all aspects of his work, a man who approached film with a watchmaker’s precision. Here are hundreds of pictures of doorways in London for his film Eyes Wide Shut, photos of the actors in A Clockwork Orange wearing dozens of different hats, towering stacks of newspaper ads which he measured to make sure he was not being cheated out of a few millimeters, and footage of him, shot by his daughter, on the set of Full Metal Jacket directing the cast on the cadence of their genital fondling."
