One of our favourites, Wacko Maria recently released a range of light casual pieces from their Autumn/Winter range. Well known for their unique brand philosophy, and the recurring theme around music, this latest range takes on a similar approach and features some bold and to-the-point one liners like “I AM VERY GOOD”, and “THERE IS ALWAYS SUNSHINE IN MY HEART”. Certainly a very positive statement in a market that is somewhat dominated more by skulls and crossbones. Take a look inside. (more…) -

DALEK & DELTA Exhibition at Elms Lester
August 19th 09, 4:06
Next week sees the opening of DALEK & DELTA, with two highly respected International artists: James Marshall and Boris Tellegen at the Elms Lester Gallery Painting Room. James Marshall, aka DALEK, who currently lives in Carolina, and Amsterdam based Boris Tellegen, aka DELTA, are both masters of their handling of colour and texture.
DALEK, who spent a year as an assistant to Takashi Murakami, has developed and honed a technique of meticulously applying flat blocks of colour, whilst playing with shapes and exaggerated optical perspectives.
“Two changes in technique have recently allowed DALEK to ratchet the spatial complexity up a notch. In linear terms, there’s an increased overlapping between forms whilst, in colour terms, subverting the light-to-dark or conversely dark-to-light build-up of tonal depth by interjecting chop-change colour values at will across the picture plane to break up conventional recession “ Ben Jones – art historian

Conversely, DELTA is constantly experimenting with his his complex ‘architectural’ paintings, collages and 3D sculptural wall pieces, discovering, through his use of colour and references to urban decay, how to play with perspectives through the build up of textures and shadows.
“There’s an openness in DELTA’s practice to organic breakdown which might at first seem antithetical to the precision of his work’s apparently precise graphic underpinning. Thinking back to one of his street pieces, with the moss proliferating and gradually covering the relief, helps point up in a rare natural example a key conceptual theme for DELTA throughout: the organic system and its threat to subsume the man-made.” Ben Jones – art historian

Both artists will be present at the Private View on Thursday 27th August between 6 – 9pm
The exhibition continues until 26th September

BLU | Smoking Politicians
August 16th 09, 20:58
BLU the Italian street artist specializing in large scale murals and urban design recently put up a great piece during the FAME festival in Italy.

“if you’re new to FAME festival, you probably dont know that Grottaglie is 10 minutes far from Taranto. if you’ve been in Taranto, you probably remember that the city has a massive ugly factory called ILVA (one of the biggest steel factory in europe).
this factory is destroying the territory and killing a lot of workers ’cause of its big lack of security measures and high environmental pollution. the direct consequence is that Taranto has one of the highest rate of death by cancer in italy.

As a plus, the smartest politicians from Grottaglie’s town council allowed, back in ‘96, the construction of a very filthy special wastes dump right outside the city. they did not inform the people, they did not ask anybody’s opinion, they just did it. i wish i could wonder WHY they did it.
this said, I usually like to think that every piece of art can have different meaning, depending on who is looking at it and from wich perspective he is looking from. this time, i prefer to think that we’re all looking at a mere mirror of the actual situation we’re living in.
especially for our mean local politicians, none of them excluded. i hope that they can recognise themselves in these huge faces and feel disgusted for what they’ve done to their people.” – FAME
