Harvest by haroshi Exhibition: Skate & Destroy

Currently on exhibit at plsmis in Tokyo is an exhibition titled Skate and Destroy by haroshi (Harvest). Making sculptures out of broken and old skate decks. The show will be on show for a week in plsmis gallery till the 27th of February.
“Skate decks eventually see its life shortened by snapping, cracking and/or wearing out. Purchasing new decks is a never ending cycle and this was evident by the tower of old decks that were reaching to the ceiling of my room. We can’t throw away these decks because they hold sentimental meanings to us. I looked at these unusable decks every day and thought there must be something I can make with these.
I decided to make some accessories with the old decks and this was the birth of Harvest. The works of Harvest are through the perspectives of a skater and as an artist. As a skater, I want to take responsibility of reusing skateboards when they were no longer useable. Also, as an artist I want to explore the possibilities of what can be done with skateboards.
We see the care and effort that a skater can have for his/her deck and we also acknowledge the origins of a skateboard. We believe that if the small things we do can connect to sustainability then we’re doing something right. We’d be satisfied in our effort when people look at products and start thinking of ways to recycle.”

Banksy Rat Painting on Property Sold, but to be removed by Developer

During the 2004 biennial in Liverpool, Banksy put up a large scale mural painting of his infamous rat on the exterior wall of a run down pub in Liverpool. In December 2008, when the pub owner decided to put the property up for sale, it was valuated by real estate agents to have it’s original estimated sale value doubled (from £495,000 to approximately £1 million) due to the Banksy Rat painting on the exterior wall (view our post on this here). Two years later, this building has finally been sold to a property developer for £114,000. With no interest in art, the property developer now intends to remove the large scale mural.
Telegraph reports:
The mural, a 30-foot tall painting of a rat holding a machine gun, will disappear after the businessman bought the former Liverpool pub it adorns and promised to paint over it.
The Grade 2 listed Georgian property was adorned by artwork from the Bristol-born graffiti giant Banksy, as part of Liverpool’s Biennial art festival in 2004.
But after purchasing the artwork at auction on Thursday for £114,000, property developer Billy Palmer, 44, admitted he has no interest in preserving the painting, despite protests from art lovers.
“I’m not a fan of modern art, I can’t say I know much about it really,” he said after the auction at Liverpool’s Marriott Hotel.
“All I was concerned about was getting this great building for a good price, I’m going to turn it into luxury flats.
“I might leave the Banksy on the wall until last, just to see how it looks, but it will have to go to get the look I want.”
As an official commission, the work is a rarity for Banksy.
He has stopped authenticating his work to prevent dealers from cashing-in on his now global fame.
It’s been interesting to see how the series of events have unfolded over the years regarding this piece. From creating value for the run down pub at one stage to being a neglected piece today. At present the decision to have it removed has been met with mixed views and actions, on one hand; the art goers have a pro-banksy stance on supporting the preservation of the Banksy piece, on the other hand, the property developers simply sees this as a great opportunity to restore a Georgian building to it’s former glory. It’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything about this building, It’ll be interesting to see how this will play out over the next months. Make sure you stay tuned here.

Whitney Biennial 2010 Preview Video

Here is a preview look at the 2010 Whitney Biennial that is scheduled to commence next week on the 25th of February. Currently in it’s 75th year, the Whitney Biennial has been one of the leading biennials celebrating American contemporary art since 1932. The 2010 show will be curated by Francesco Bonami (Curator of 2003 Venice Biennale) and Gary Carrion-Murayari. Featuring a very impressive line-up of contemporary artists (listed below), the biennial will be on show from February 25th – May 30, 2010. Mark this down on your calendar, as this is an event you definitely don’t want to miss. Rag & Bone Fall/Winter 2010 Collection

We continue with our New York Fashion week coverage with Rag & Bone’s 2010 Fall/Winter collection. Since their establishment in 2002, the New York label headed by David Neville and Marcus Wainwright has been going from strength to strength every season, this latest collection seems to be of no exception to their well thought-out designs over the year. Consisting of heavily layered looks predominately in earth-toned colors; the collection sees a fine balance of street-sensible, modern menswear styling paired with obvious mountaineer explorer references such as the hiking boot, amongst a number of other great items like the tweed patterned coats, bubble knits, blazers and a variety of jackets. An great collection with many very wearable pieces which I imagine will be great on it’s own.

Sutton Lane Gallery: ‘What Where’ Exhibition

Currently on show at Sutton Lane Gallery is an exhibition titled “What Where” featuring new works by Tauba Auerbach, Alex Hubbard, Nathan Hylden and Zak Prekop.
The exhibition explores the continuing investigation of painting, narrowing its focus on multiple disciplinary practices concerning the traditional medium and the vicissitudes of such an undertaking. The title What Where, taken from Samuel Beckett’s final dramatic work, highlights the paintings’ indeterminacy or lack of easy categorization as well as the viewer’s inability to see the exhibition as a whole at any given time. The artists brought together here – though not all exclusively painters – share a methodical, process-based approach that emphasizes ascetic optical poetics, openness to mediated dealings with the format as well as minute attention to the material constructs of painting.
The exhibition deals not so much with the concept of abstraction but rather investigates painting as a functional model in relation to the subjective practices of its creators who utilize this accessible, conventional mode to exploit myriad possibilities within the confining parameters they have set for themselves. The artists gathered here are not specifically concerned with artistic movements or institutional critique; rather they individually seek to manipulate the established boundaries of painting in order to push it in a continual progression forward.

Neighborhood 2010 .1ST EX Series “The Magnificent Seven” Lookbook

Here is a look at Neighborhood’s latest Spring/Summer 2010 Collection presented in the form of a lookbook catalogue. The collection titled “The Magnificent Seven”, draws inspiration from the 60s American cowboy film of the same name and English rock band The Clash. The mix of punk rock attitude and Americana aesthetic is immediately apparent, from vintage workwear to rodeo inspired looks. The collection sees contribution from a number of collaborative partners, including Champion, Loake, Hamilton Watch Company, Porter, and NGAP. Phillips de Pury: Contemporary Art Evening and Day Auction Preview

Phillips de Pury & Company Auction house is scheduled to commence their Contemporary Art Evening and Day over the next few days, with an evening auction tonight on the 12th, and a day auction on the 13th. With all the major auction houses hosting Contemporary Art auctions this month, a lot of great pieces have been put on sale. We saw last week the record setting Sotheby’s sale, and the evening auction at Christie’s last night fetching prices above the estimated figure on many occasions. It’ll be interesting to see the outcome for the Phillips de Pury auction.

Christie’s: Post-War and Contemporary Art Auction Preview

Christie’s Auction House is scheduled to commence it’s Post War and Contemporary Art Auction this week, with an evening auction on the 11th, and a day auction on the 12th. Coming right off the back of rival powerhouse Sothebys’ record setting sale last week , it’ll be interesting to see what the outcome will be for this upcoming action. Totalling at 249 lots on sale for the entire event (52 lots on the evening sale, 197 lots on the day sale), the auction includes a wide spanning array of artworks from contemporary street art to abstract postmodernist sculptures and everything in between. Including some of our contemporary favorites the likes of Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, Richard Prince, Barry McGee, Damien Hirst, Feng Zheng Jie, Ai Weiwei, Banksy, and Yoshitomo Nara amongst many others.
