Giuliano Fujiwara Fall/Winter 2010 Collection
January 19th 10, 3:08
Giuliano Fujiwara showcases the 2010 Fall/Winter collection this week at Milan fashion week. Characterized by a distinctive mix of Japanese Minimalist aesthetics and an overtly Italian masculinity. Led by Head designer and Creative Director, Masataka Matsumara, the 2010 f/w collection showcases the label’s edgy, yet wearable take on samurai sportswear. Focusing on fluid pants and heavy layering, Matsumara puts together impressive array of layered styles that includes a series of knits and an exceptional range of outerwear from cropped blazers, to lengthened leather jackets, enlivened with oversized beads reminiscent of Buddhist prayer beads, and the occasional crimson and earth-tone colors that juxtaposes with a deep grunge black. The footwear department consists of mainly high-cut silhouette sneakers with a futuristic look. A great collection overall which I’m sure will further strengthen the label’s position in menswear and aid in restoring giuliano Fujiwara as a label to it’s former glory of the 80’s and early 90’s.
Take a look at the collection below.

Todd James | “Make My Burden Lighter” Preview
January 15th 10, 20:51

Todd James (a.k.a REAS) is having the opening reception for his show at Gering and Lopez Gallery in New York tonight. The exhibition entitled “Make My Burden Lighter.” draws inspiration from some of the current world crises, and attempts to depict them through a visual medium.
“This show “Make my Burden Lighter” is about some of the themes in my recent work global conflicts and economic disasters that have been tied into it and trying to find the finish line to them and maybe finding some humor on the way through it all. As Skeme’s mom said in Style Wars, “You have to laugh to keep from crying.” These are really everyone’s burdens, I’m just discussing them visually in my voice.”
The exhibition will be on display through February 20th. Make sure you check it out if you are in the area.

Take a look at a short interview with Todd James about the exhibition over at Complex.

Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child | Documentary Film
January 5th 10, 0:42

In his short career, Jean-Michel Basquiat was a phenomenon. He became notorious for his graffiti art under the moniker SAMO in the late 1970s on the Lower East Side scene, sold his first painting to Deborah Harry for $200, and became best friends with Andy Warhol. Appreciated by both the art cognoscenti and the public, Basquiat was launched into international stardom. However, soon his cult status began to override the art that had made him famous in the first place.

Now director Tamra Davis pays homage to her friend in a definitive documentary, titled “Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child”, the film was a labor of love for Director Tamra Davis, (who met the artist in 1983) and with the screenwriter Becky Johnston (who interviewed him on camera in 1988 two years before his death at age 27, from a heroin overdose).
Thus far, two notable films have been made to document Basquiat’s life. Basquiat himself played a character role in “Downtown ‘81,” and Julian Schnabel’s “Basquiat,” with Jeffrey Wright in the title role, both these films however were partly fiction, and it became clear to Davis that there was little of the actual Basquiat on film.

Tamra Davis’ 88 minute documentary delves into Basquiat as an iconoclast. His dense, bebop-influenced neo-expressionist work emerged while minimalist, conceptual art was the fad; as a successful black artist, he was constantly confronted by racism and misconceptions. Much can be gleaned from insider interviews and archival footage, but it is Basquiat’s own words and work that powerfully convey the mystique and allure of both the artist and the man.
Scheduled for it’s World Premier at the Sundance Film Festival starting January 21st, 2010.
Visit at Sundance Film Festival’s’ official website here for more information on screening times. Or take a look at T Magazine’s report here on the film’s preview screening which took place earlier in December in Miami.
Video below shows a 1986 interview with Basquiat featuring Andy Warhol (From the final episode of State of the Art, a series of documentaries about the visual arts in the 1980s.)

Space Invader in London | Video
January 3rd 10, 2:10

Space Invader gives us a look at how his mosaic tile artworks are created and put on the streets. His tile artworks have been spotted on the streets of metropolis cities all around the world- all of which are a part of his on-going global invasion endeavor that began over a decade ago in the early 90’s.
The video was taken in November 09 while he was in London for LAzaride’s Grifters exhibition (Which is still on exhibit till the 16th of January), Invader talks us through his process, from cement to numbering to marking the location on his iPhone. The piece shown is titled LDN 116 (the 116th piece in London). A great look into the creation process of these artworks, and a bit of commentary on the side giving insight into the thoughts and ideas of the Parisian artist. Take a look below.

The Ghost Village Project
December 30th 09, 1:12
Here is a look at an interesting Graffiti project that was created over 3 days on the west coast of Scotland. Titled The Ghost Village Project, it brought together 6 artists – Timid, Remi/Rough, System, Stormie Mills, Juice 126, and Derm, given free reign to paint in an abandoned 1970s village.
Working together on huge collaborative walls and individually in hidden nooks and crannies all over the site the artists realised long held dreams and were inspired by the bleakness and remoteness of the site. Drawing on the history of the village the artists’ stated intent on completion of the project was to populate the ghostvillage with the art and characters that it deserved. Take a look at the video documenting the project below.
