Ruben Rude’s Americana at Gallery 1988
June 22nd 09, 23:20
Reuben Rude was born in San Francisco, as the sun was setting on the Free Love era. His bohemian parents then moved “back to the land” to the woods of Northern California, where he spent the better part of his childhood without a television. This lack of technology forced him to spend almost every waking hour drawing and painting. When he moved back to the city to attend art school, he got into all the usual trouble with graffiti writers, skateboarders and art students. He now lives in San Francisco with his wife and eight-year-old daughter, and yes, a television. However, he still spends most of his waking hours drawing and painting. Sometimes he even gets paid for it.

Benjamin Marra Interview
June 7th 09, 22:22
This is this first installment of a new series of artists interviews I’m conducting, so let’s not waste anytime here, let me introduce BenjaminMarra
Benjamin Marra is the creator of the acclaimed underground comic series Night Business. He’s the Publisher of American Tradition Comics which just put out Marra’s sophomore comic effort, Gangsta Rap Posse. Marra is also an accomplished illustrator for such clients as Rolling Stone, Playboy, Nylon, Vice and The New York Times. He’s received awards and recognition from The Society of Publication Designers, American Illustration and The Society of Illustrators. In 2006 he was named as one of the Art Directors Club’s “Young Guns
www.benjaminmarra.com
http://benjaminmarra.blogspot.com/
Ok, here we go-
SLAMXHYPE – Where are you from and what can you tell us about your hometown?
Benjamin Marra – I was born in Canada but was reared on the mean, suburban streets of bucolic Nyack, NY. Life was tough. The abundance of cavernous antique stores, trying to ignore the well-meaning, moral teachers at school, the harrowing trips to the mall and all those events at the local library. This was an unsung version of the school of hard knocks.
SXH – As a kid, what did you want to be growing up?
BM – A highly superstitious, religiously devout, underground cage fighter.
SXH – Who or what do you look at for inspiration?
BM – Conan the Barbarian, Dungeons & Dragons, Heavy Metal album art, Heavy Metal music, Giallo movies, Gangsta Rap, 80s movies, 80s Penthouse, Miami Vice, Charles Bronson, Philip K. Dick, Marc Laming, Paul Gulacy, Ethan Van Sciver, my insane, jetsetting, premium-drug-dependant, culture-shattering life and worldview and Myself.
SXH – Where’s your studio?
BM – In my mind.
SXH – Describe a typical work day:
BM – Wake up among several beautiful, partially-clothed women in a strange room and slip out the front door. Drag race anyone willing in my matte-black Dodge Challenger back to my apartment. Don my Armani-Exchange robe (I only wear AX). Walk to the McDonald’s down the block and shovel an egg McMuffin and hashbrown into my mouth, wash them down with coffee, black. Sit on my couch back at my apartment and meditate on how awesome shit is. Catch up on episodes of The Hills online. Order a Ducati Monster online with money I haven’t made yet. Trade stocks and check my investments. Smoke cigarettes like mad to calm my nerves about the market volitility. Through my cigarettes out the window onto the hobos’ heads going through the trash and quit smoking forever. Reread my entire Verotik collection. Scour the internet for Ernie Chan inked original pages of either The Incredible Hulk or Conan the Barbarian. Sit on the edge of my bed with my head down and worry that I’ll never be able to ink like Ernie Chan or Ethan Van Sciver. Accept my shortcomings as an artist, look at my drafting table and decide I need to buy some more art supplies. Get in the Challenger. Vroom. Drive up to the country and look at houses I fantasize buying one day. Nothing too big. Something comfortable by the water. Decide that I want to live on a giant compound, like an abandoned canning factory, and become a recluse like Howard Hughes and live only in one room. Hire a staff of Mormans to assist me. Build a giant complex around the one room I will live in the rest of my life drawing comics, not bothered by anyone. Actually … none of this is true. My typical work day is too boring to recount.
SXH – What materials do you usual work in?
BM – My imagination, 3H pencils, non-photo blue pencil, Copic MultiLiner pens, Strathmore Cold Press Bristol board, Mac G5.
SXH – What is your all time favorite painting?
BM – Giotto’s frescoes in the Cappella Scrovegni or “The Ambassadors” by Hans Holbein the Unger.
SXH – What do you do when you’re not making art?
BM – I read books about small business and personal finance. Or Epic Fantasy books with maps of imaginary lands in the front. Or I think about making art.
SXH – Is there any Artist or Illustrator you would like to collaborate with?
BM – Nathan Fox, Ethan Van Sciver, Marc Laming.
SXH – What are you working on now and what’s in the future for you?
BM – The next issue of Night Business … among other projects of which I hesitate to speak about.
SXH – Important non related question here: Sabbath or Zepplin?
BM – Sabbath. Holy Hell if there is even a goddamn question.
SXH – Coffee or tea?
BM – Coffee. Black.
SXH – Music, talk radio, books on tape or golden silence
BM – Television … or books on tape … or sports talk radio …

Genuine Fakes by Thweet Creative
June 7th 09, 21:02

The NBA Finals are among us now, and with the Lakers up 2 games, you better pick a side. Or just be a front runner and go with the winning team. Either way Thweet Creative has given us two designs to choose from just in time for the finals.
For the Laker Haters-The Los Angeles Lakers are a team that people love to hate. From coast to coast and around the world, the team from L.A. inspires a hatred not seen in any other sport. From the die hard fan to the casual observer, there are number of people out there that call their favorite team, “Whoever is playing the Lakers.” Show your disdain for the pretty boys in purple and gold. You WILL be turning heads and getting double takes from Boston to Orlando to Cleveland when you sport this shirt….then you will get a high 5. This high quality shirt will immediately become part of your “rotation.” Made of 100% pure organic cotton, this shirt feels as good as it looks.

For the Magic Haters-The City of Angels, long a city that believed in their own Magic, will now rise up against the Orlando Magic and their version of Superman in the middle. Show your support for the Lakers in a clever way. This ironic, eye catching original design will illicit some stares and some heated conversation in Laker Land….then it will get you a “Oh, snap….where did you get that!” This high quality shirt will immediately become part of your “rotation.” Made of 100% pure organic cotton, this shirt feels as good as it looks.

Matt Dangler at Gallery 1988 San Francisco
June 4th 09, 19:18
Matt Dangler opened his show ” Searching for Satori” at Gallery 1988 San Francisco this past weekend. I really enjoy the way he models and renders with paint, his work kind of reminds of Hieronymus Bosch. All theses strange little characters doing weird things, at least they’re not demons dragging poor souls to hell. Dangler’s work is much lighter than that. But maybe we need to see more Last Judgement paintings for he new era, start scaring some folks. Here’s a couple examples-

Thomas Broersma “When Bikers Meet Humans”
May 22nd 09, 9:09
Thomas Broersma is a quiet guy, he doesn’t say too much. But his art speaks for itself, it kind of screams and takes swings at you. Maybe “Screaming” is a good way of describing his work. Recently, He illustrated a book written by JJ Solari titled “When Bikers Meet Humans“ The Illustrations are great, just black and white, very graphic and somewhat obscene. I think of Frank Zappa’s song Titties n’ Beer when I think of a book deticated to short stoies on Bikers. here’s some examples-

Klutch returns to DDR Projects
May 21st 09, 10:24
“Knots, Clots, Kooks and Mooks” is the title of Klutch’s new show at DDR Projects in Long Beach
Press release from DDR Projects-
“Somehow both genuinely old school and aesthetically innovative, Klutch’s work continues to evolve not only along with, but also outside of the pervasive iconography of the current artistic movement. It is a visual signature that is recognizable in all of it’s varied incantations, regardless of medium. Though the movements that birthed his career have long succumbed to the mortalities of popular culture and reincarnated, raised by a new generation, Klutch has ridden the waxed curbed on the edge of transient style and never fallen into the time specificity of any particular scene. And like the strange phoenix of the punk movement, he doesn’t seem to burn out or fade way”
Klutch, best known as the cranky old punk responsible for the Vinyl Killers project, has been creating visual mischief for over two decades. From his work with the early 1980’s hardcore punk scene and the legendary Skull Skates, to painting backgrounds for Nike advertisements, his work has appeared around the world on t-shirts, skateboards, city walls, magazines, and of course art galleries. In 2005 the suite he created at San Francisco’s Hotel Des Arts was featured in Time magazine’s annual “Best Of” issue.
Klutch lives and mostly works in Portland and is an avid fan of the mossy green surroundings known as the rain forests of the Pacific Northwest.
You can see more of Klutch’s work here

UP x Alex Pardee Walrus Rider: Official Release & Signing
May 11th 09, 20:17
To celebrate it’s 10th Anniversary, Upper Playground has teamed up with several artists to create vinyl figures commemorating the event. The first in the series, Alex Pardee has created the Walrus Rider, a two-faced creature, whose legs were stolen, seeking vengeance and searching for his legs atop his walrus associate. The figure is approximately 11″ tall and has bendy arms and a removable tusk, which fits into the rider’s hand.
Alex Pardee wrote a poem about tales and travails of the Walrus Rider:
Born with legs of a golden tint,
He’d walk, he’d run, he’d jump and sprint,
There’s nothing much he COULDN’T do,
With legs of gold and wooden shoes,
The girls all loved his limbs and knees,
For no one else had legs like these,
But jealousy arose with some,
Cause’ HE was having all the fun!
So late one night upon his slumber,
Darkness drenched with rain and thunder.
There he slept and dreamt of blondes,
But when he woke HIS LEGS WERE GONE!
Who would do this tragic thing?
What good is a bee if a bee cannot sting?
And what good is HE without legs at all?
Now he cannot move and he’s not that tall!
So he hopped on the back of his bestest friend,
And together they ride as he seeks his REVENGE!The Walrus Rider is available in two colors: Teal and black. The teal/magenta figure is being produced in an edition of 500 pieces. A second colorway of black/green is an Upper Playground exclusive and is being produced in an edition of 113 pieces. The Upper Playground exclusive colorway is releasing on Saturday, May 30th and Alex Pardee will be at Upper Playground’s flagship San Francisco store for a signing from 12 to 2 PM. Alex Pardee is also taking a trip down to Los Angeles to do a signing at Munky King on Saturday, June 13th.

Strange Grooming Habits at Copro Nason
May 9th 09, 10:36
Travis Louie’s paintings come from the tiny little drawings and many writings in his journals. He’s created his own imaginary world that is grounded in Victorian and Edwardian times. It is inhabited by human oddities, mythical beings, and otherworldly characters who appear to have had their formal portraits taken to mark their existence and place in society.
More of these characters can be seen at the opening of “Strange Grooming Habits” Opening tonight May 9th at Copro Nason Gallery in Santa Monica
