Jeff Mcmillan RSS Feed

Jeff McMillan was born in October of 1977 in San Jose, CA where he spent a good portion of his life, and it was during the first few years of Jeff’s existence that he started trying his hand at art at the young age of 3. McMillan’s influences lie heavily in 80’s pop culture. The artist proclaims that the decade boasted the best television programming, cartoons, toys, and movies. It was a decade of imagination and creativity during a time when the world was changing so drastically on all levels. As he continued to make use of the right side of his brain, it eventually became time for McMillan to begin the final stages of schooling. He attended the Academy of Art in San Francisco from 1999 to 2001 until he made the big move to Southern California, where he continued his schooling at the prestigious Art Center College of Design, in Pasadena, CA from 2001 to 2004. He studied illustration at both schools until he graduated from the Art Center with honors. He now lives and works in Long Beach with his wonderful wife, Liv and a disobedient Siamese cat.

  • Dave The Chimp at ATM Gallery

ATM is proud to present “PRINTS for the New Power Generation”, Dave the Chimp’s first solo show in his new hometown of Berlin.

Dave the Chimp is, in the words of +1 magazine, “ A Veritable Renaissance Man”. Well, if that means a painter, a cartoonist, a director of pop videos and TV commercials, a graffiti artist, a dancer with a band, a designer of both skateboard graphics and skateboard shoes, and an avid self-publisher, then we think it’s probably a pretty good thing to say about the Chimp. We could also tell you that he has exhibited his paintings and been featured in books alongside all the major players in the street art and skateboard art scene today (Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Dalek, Blu, The London Police, Mark Gonzales, Andy Jenkins, etc) and has had successful solo shows in Britain, Italy, Germany and Luxembourg. He has been the CI designer for a skateboard company, and the Artist in Residence at a London advertising agency, and the first book of his street work will be published by Publikat this summer. Dave the Chimps` work has a depths of thinking rarely visible in the Street Art scene, and with an ability to communicate so much with so few marks, his art is some of the most interesting seen in both galleries and on the streets today.

For most Berliner´s Dave the Chimp is already well known for his famous mural in Kreuzberg and his fantastic artwork at “Künstlerhaus Bethanien” and he was a significant part of the legendary “Backjumps Live Issues”.

“PRINTS for the New Power Generation”, as the name suggests, will be a collection strictly of screen, lino, and stencil prints. The Chimp will be exhibiting a selection of prints from various shows and street projects from the last few years, as well as some brand new, limited edition prints created exclusively for this exhibition in runs of 25 and under.

You can see more of Dave The Chimp’s work  and get a great interview from the guys over at Art Bastard here

  • The Citrus Report “Citrus Hates Peas” Issue 16

From a look at this Mountains painting by Sacramento, California based artist Skinner, you might think he’s a little disturbed. And while that may be true, they always say there’s a fine line between insanity and genius, so we’re hoping Skinner’s closer to the latter. Good thing he’s featured in the latest release from The Citrus Report.

The Citrus’ 16th Report is titled Citrus Hates Peas. We actually kinda like peas (especially with SoyYaki teriyaki sauce all up on that…yum) but heck, everyone’s entitled to their own opinions.

Who else is featured in TCR this time around? Iron Chef America”s” Chris Cosentino, and Funny or Die star, Charlie the Abusive Teddy Bear. Also, columnist Ricky Powell has a few words on the state of everything. Peep it now at thecitrusreport.com

  • Martha Rich at La Luz De Jesus

Martha Rich’s third show at La Luz de Jesus GalleryNice School” explores her experiences growing up in suburban Philadelphia where young women were expected to be nice, polite and helpful – being liked by all was the ultimate goal. At first glance the paintings appear benign, nice and comforting. Below the surface, the layers reveal a darker side to being nice, trying to answer the question whether being too nice can be a not so nice thing.

Where did you go to Nice School? This show is an exploration of niceness. What a nice girl. That’s nice. If you are nice, people will like you. Do you like nice people? Is nice better than mean? Does nice finish last? Is mean winning? Jerk. Mean gets the attention. Does nice equal doormat? Wimp. Being nice all the time is annoying. Is nice contagious? You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. Who wants to catch flies? Nice. Be nice and come see the show.

  • Tessar Lo at LeBasse Projects

I recently saw Tessar Lo in Downtown L.A a week or so before his show at LeBasse Projects.  I met Tessar not too long ago, I think it was a opening at Corey Helford.  I’ve been a fan of his work for a while now, so I was excited to see a brand new body of work from him.  Tessar is a cool dude and a very talented artist. I’d like to work with him one of these days. Maybe a collab down the line, hmm?

I borrowed this press release from LeBasse Projects-

LeBasse Projects hosted  Future Perfect, Tessar Lo’s first solo exhibition
Lo developed his first solo show around the idea that the future is completely unforeseeable. Only in our dreams
can the future be a utopia, and while anything is ultimately possible, the reality is we do not know where we will find
    ourselves.
Lo’s paintings often depict these ideas and emotions he cannot easily express in words. While on the surface Lo’s
work often has the feel of an intimate storybook, upon closer inspection we see a deep sense of vulnerability and
loneliness. The paintings for his solo exhibition continue to develop these feelings as he states his desire to be an
island – alone, not needing to rely or respond to anyone but himself. The series of paintings are also larger in scale
than anything Lo has worked on before, partly directed from his fear of being a merely decorative artist and partly
from his increased confidence in his craft.
The unique emotion and techniques that make up Lo’s work have turned him into one of the most buzz-worthy
emerging artists working today. With shows booked into 2010 from London to Los Angeles and appearances at Art
Basel Miami and in NY on the horizon expect Lo’s first solo exhibition to be a significant step in what will undoubtedly
    by a significant career.
    About Tessar Lo
Tessar Lo is a graduate of Toronto’s Sheridan Institute with a BAA in Illustration. Post graduation Lo moved to Los
Angeles to begin work as a full time artist. With several successful gallery shows and several commercial illustration
jobs under his belt, Lo is now focused on developing his career as a full time artist.

  • B. Monroe by Brendan Monroe

Brendan Monroe has a new book available through Park Life and his website, I’ve known Brendan for a while now, we met at Art Center back in 2001. He’s a talented guy and a good friend.  Since graduating from the Art Center in Pasdadena, Brendan Monroe has been painting, drawing, and sculpting a mythical world that is inhabited by blobbish, oozy, paint-chip, trash-laden life-forms interspersed with human figures. Loosely based on the notion that studying smaller enviroments can help us understand the greater world around us.  Although he has self-published a wonderful run of miniature artist-books, this is the first inclusive monograph of Monroe’s work including over 70 paintings, 15 sculptures, and installation shots.

This volume represents the artist’s progression as well as his most current body of work and it includes an interview with the artist conducted by Dr. Simon Park. Shana Nys Dambrot created an index of terms related to viewing and experiencing Brendan Monroe’s work.
