Tessar Lo at LeBasse Projects
April 23rd 09, 12:16
I recently saw Tessar Lo in Downtown L.A a week or so before his show at LeBasse Projects. I met Tessar not too long ago, I think it was a opening at Corey Helford. I’ve been a fan of his work for a while now, so I was excited to see a brand new body of work from him. Tessar is a cool dude and a very talented artist. I’d like to work with him one of these days. Maybe a collab down the line, hmm?
I borrowed this press release from LeBasse Projects-
LeBasse Projects hosted Future Perfect, Tessar Lo’s first solo exhibition
Lo developed his first solo show around the idea that the future is completely unforeseeable. Only in our dreams
can the future be a utopia, and while anything is ultimately possible, the reality is we do not know where we will find
ourselves.
Lo’s paintings often depict these ideas and emotions he cannot easily express in words. While on the surface Lo’s
work often has the feel of an intimate storybook, upon closer inspection we see a deep sense of vulnerability and
loneliness. The paintings for his solo exhibition continue to develop these feelings as he states his desire to be an
island – alone, not needing to rely or respond to anyone but himself. The series of paintings are also larger in scale
than anything Lo has worked on before, partly directed from his fear of being a merely decorative artist and partly
from his increased confidence in his craft.
The unique emotion and techniques that make up Lo’s work have turned him into one of the most buzz-worthy
emerging artists working today. With shows booked into 2010 from London to Los Angeles and appearances at Art
Basel Miami and in NY on the horizon expect Lo’s first solo exhibition to be a significant step in what will undoubtedly
by a significant career.
About Tessar Lo
Tessar Lo is a graduate of Toronto’s Sheridan Institute with a BAA in Illustration. Post graduation Lo moved to Los
Angeles to begin work as a full time artist. With several successful gallery shows and several commercial illustration
jobs under his belt, Lo is now focused on developing his career as a full time artist.you can see more of Tessar’s work on his website

B. Monroe by Brendan Monroe
April 23rd 09, 0:56
Brendan Monroe has a new book available through Park Life and his website, I’ve known Brendan for a while now, we met at Art Center back in 2001. He’s a talented guy and a good friend. Since graduating from the Art Center in Pasdadena, Brendan Monroe has been painting, drawing, and sculpting a mythical world that is inhabited by blobbish, oozy, paint-chip, trash-laden life-forms interspersed with human figures. Loosely based on the notion that studying smaller enviroments can help us understand the greater world around us. Although he has self-published a wonderful run of miniature artist-books, this is the first inclusive monograph of Monroe’s work including over 70 paintings, 15 sculptures, and installation shots.
This volume represents the artist’s progression as well as his most current body of work and it includes an interview with the artist conducted by Dr. Simon Park. Shana Nys Dambrot created an index of terms related to viewing and experiencing Brendan Monroe’s work.
Book Specs:
7.25″ x 9.5″, 176 pages, Soft Cover, French Fold Dust Jacket
Released March 2009, Limited to 2000 copies

“Sins of Atticus Finch” by Dave MacDowell
March 14th 09, 10:47
I took the night off and decided to be social, I went to Dave MacDowell’s opening last night at Thinkspace.
“The Sins of Atticus Finch”
It was great meeting Dave, we have emailed, facebooked, and have had phone conversations, we had a chance to meet each other and talk in person. He’s a good dude.
His work is awesome and to me it looks like he must paint lightening speed to get all that stuff into one piece. The paintings look fresh and they look like it was all done in one sitting.
There’s all kinds of pop culture references in them, some obvious and some discreet.
Here’s what i saw-

Another Awesome Thing, Kaiju!
February 11th 09, 11:54
I wanted to mention that I’m starting a Kaiju collection with the help of my friend James B. Levy seen below with his awesome Kaiju Collection that was on display at Art Basel this past December. It was pretty impressive to see in person. Before I was in the “Kaiju Monster Invasion” show, i had no idea how in depth and how many monsters there were in the Kaiju Index, and I can can understand how this can be addicting.
James picked out several key figures to give me a great head start on my kaiju collection, very much appreciated! And I’m happy and honored to say that he is the new owner of the “Off Shore Sea Quarrel” piece seen below-
