Five Minutes with James Oliver
October 26th 09, 1:37
As many of this website readers know, James Oliver is the one of the key person of SLAMXHYPE and also an editor in chief at The New Order Magazine.
There we interviewed him a little bit about his history and life.PARK inc. – We know that you used to be a professional football player in New Zealand. what was the turning point that you came into street fashion/street culture industry?
James Oliver – Don’t think there was a turning point to be honest, was always into skating and the lifestyle as a kid. When I was younger my skater friends thought I was weird for playing soccer and my soccer friends always thought I was weird for being a skater. But no matter what I always had to look good doing what I did. This culture in New Zealand is very different to say Tokyo, NYC or London, its hard to explain but people don’t absorb a sub culture as much as other places I have visited. Lifestyle in general is very chilled so you have to be a little strange to do something unique and excel.
In terms of me getting this involved it happened by chance I guess. Adam obviously is the founder of SLAMXHYPE and being siblings makes for comparable ideas, philosophys and motivations. Then we both came together on the idea of THE NEW ORDER print magazine, but the only reason I think it works as well as it does is because I am here in Tokyo and Adam is still in New Zealand. I am a very passionate person, I guess that is why I lived my dream as a football player but to be doing this now is another dream come true.
PARK – Do you have any specific products that you think this is your classic in your mind?
James – That is tough, I would have to say Margiela knitwear. Expensive but I still wear pieces I got over 10 years ago. Soon I will be saying Freshness Burger!
PARK – As we can see that you guys write a lot of articles everyday. how many post did you post a day?
please let me know about your best record in the past.James – Actually never counted, I know its a lot I think it is something like 20 or 30. But I am just really happy that we have a great team of contributors all around the world to help me. Especially when I have a print magazine to look after now.
PARK – Do you have any special ability to write so fast? always wondering when you writing those articles. it looks like there is an another James Oliver exist..
James – I think there is another James Oliver! Good vs Evil! Seriously it becomes very natural, if you are really into something whether its an artist or a piece of clothing then you can become quite detailed with words more easily.
PARK – Is there any new project that you are looking forward to see or announce in the near future?
James – We have just come off the Michael Lau project and what we are working on at Adams gallery in New Zealand, which is a never ending project and got some interesting names lined up. But I would just have to say keep an eye on the homepage, but issue 3 of THE NEW ORDER will be massive and issue 4 will be even bigger,,, especially here in Japan.
PARK – MOS burger or FRESHNESS burger?
James – Question 2,,, Mos Burger sucks! If you are ever in New Zealand try Burger Fuel. CN Cheese!
