February 10th 09, 15:21
Founded in 2001, Clae helped to pioneer the fusion of sneakers and smarter footwear. Proving that ’smart casual’ can sometimes be a very good thing, their hybrids of athletic and traditional styles found favour with a generation who had outgrown the skate shoes of their youth but weren’t ready to hang up their sneakers just yet. Here’s an exclusive look at the new Spring 2009 collection which stays true to the brand’s philosophy of creating dapper modern classics with unusual details. This season sees a couple of new models introduced to the line-up, while several staple favourites have been revamped with new colours and fabric applications including patent leather and wool. January 31st 09, 15:54
Last weekend’s Bright tradeshow in Frankfurt played host to several exhibitions featuring everything from live painting to fixed gear bike demos. The artwork on display included murals applied directly to the walls of the disused police station that houses the tradeshow, as well as paintings and prints from the likes of Geoff McFetridge, Dalek and Cody Hudson amongst some great work from lesser-known names. Meanwhile Fixed Gear London and Suburbs Crew from Paris joined forces with Azita for a display of track bikes and a demo centring around a specially-built bank & wallride area. The undisputed highlight of the exhibition was a deluxe all-black bicycle featuring a velvet-coated frame and handlebars covered with ostrich skin. (more…)

Oi Polloi Moccasins
January 16th 09, 14:05
Manchester menswear connoisseurs Oi Polloi are following up their Etnies Plus collaboration with their own take on the moccasin. The low-cut shoes are hand-made in the USA using high quality Swiss hides tanned in a small, family-owned English tannery. The unique production process results in leather with tightly-joined fibres that are still pliable and breathable – in layman’s terms, this means that they feel as good as they look. The shoes will be available in very limited quantities from Oi Polloi in February.

Previous collections have used leather as their primary material, but this clashed with the designer’s vegetarian lifestyle so she set out to find an animal-friendly alternative for the A/W ‘08 range. FreshCotton Artist Collection
August 30th 08, 3:07

The Dutch online store FreshCotton was started by one of the founders of Ben-G, the internationally renowned Amsterdam skate shop linked with the artist Parra (and located beneath his studio). For seven years they’ve been supplying Europe with products from both the big players in the industry and smaller artist-led labels while also dropping occasional artist collaborations of their own. This season they’ve stepped up their game and released the first full FreshCotton collection with designs from a team of well-known artists from around the globe printed on their own cut ‘n’ sew tees. The global range of the artwork used means that the designs bypass local trends, resulting in a collection with a more interesting, independent and whimsical take on street fashion. Featured artists include the Dutch genius Cosmic Crack, graphic designers Robert Hanson from the UK and Freshco from the Netherlands and cult American comic artist Andy Rementer amongst others. Further artist series collections will drop four times a year and the first range is available now at FreshCotton and other retailers.

Mark Ward’s ‘Hand Rendered Hype’ artwork
August 29th 08, 8:26

There’s only one week left to see graphic artist Mark Ward’s ‘Hand Rendered Hype’ solo show at Slam City Skates, so if you’re in London then we recommend you get down there before the 4th September to check it out. The exhibition is themed around Mark’s early fascination with the American influences of skateboarding, music, TV and videos, and his gradual realiation that the images of a sun-drenched American lifestyle he was being sold as a teenager didn’t reflect the reality of his South London environment. The artwork that the Central St Martins graduate created for this shows demonstrates his love of the glossy American ideal while at the same time revealing the more sober underlying truth. The show should strike a chord for most viewers since anyone growing up outside the US in the last few decades can probably relate to its theme, whether their influences were skateboarding, basketball, music, film or fashion.
