  • Larry Clark ‘Kiss the Past Hello’ Exhibition Musee D’Art Moderne

Having just opened at the Musee D’Art Moderne in Paris is KIDS and Bully director Larry Clark’s retrospective photography exhibition entitled ‘Kiss the Past Hello’. Having already caused a huge commotion, the museum has prohibited under-18-year olds from viewing the show. The reaction from Purple-Diary writer Pierre-Alexandre Mateos is as follows..

“This current censorship by the Mairie de Paris has been brought on by the idea that teenagers must be protected from Larry Clark’s explicit sexual representations. This is a misguided view, as art can not be compared with pornography, it is not the same intention, process, and result. This censorship is not in the interests of teenagers. The best way to protect them is not to ban them from shows like this, but to show them the dangers — notably of drugs — that Larry Clark so much focuses on. Under the pretext of protecting the curators and the museum directors, the Mairie de Paris is compliant with the regression speech in France about art as a space of free expression and representation. It implicates the progressive judiciaries on the art sphere. Clark’s work studies and portrays the conflictual relationships teenagers go through. He represents kids without puritanism and judgement, so much so that teenagers around the world relate to his vivid and real take on life. This censorship builds a new boundary between the real and its representations, and between the adult and teenager ethos.”

Larry Clark’s ‘Kiss The Past Hello’ exhibition is on show until January 2nd 2011.

‘Whitewall*’s Fall 2010 issue, out the second week in October, boasts a 14-page feature on Hedi Slimane, the man who reshaped our view of youth culture, rock and roll, and contemporary style. He forever changed men’s fashion, and since 2007 he has elevated the caliber of the photo blog with his online “photo diary.” His body of work is stunning, which should be no surprise given his impeccable taste. In his interview with *Whitewall*, Slimane says his focus is not youth, but “the open field which comes with youth: the restlessness, the exaggeration of feelings, the lack of expectation.” It seems the passion he brings to both photography and art derived from that open field.’
