The Face is regarded as the “80s fashion bible”, unofficially of course as the magazine was the epitome of culture vulture for two decades. The publication was the perhaps the most defining read for people who enjoyed pop culture having featured all the names from Boy George to the Spice Girls, from Oasis to Kate Moss, while everyone remembers the epic Macaulay Culkin cover. During editor Richard Benson reign throughout the 90’s The Face become a piece of furniture appearing on most peoples coffee tables, yet in 2004 the magazine folded due to a stale format and too many competitors. One bright spark was that Pop, the fashion sibling continues to be a favourite pick up in Britain and around the world. The reason for this post is that there has been retrospective collection of images of many of the famed covers that have graced news agents has appeared on Flickr and well wroth checking out, providing a real sense of nostalgia some of these covers are just unforgettable. Perhaps one day these covers will grace a gallery floor, who knows?

  • Henrik Vibskov Spring/Summer 2009 Collection

Perhaps Denmark’s finest designer at the moment Henrik Vibskov has constructed his Spring/Summer 2009 collection for next year with great distinction. “In keeping up with the Scandinavian tradition, silhouettes were clean with avant-garde twists.” I really like the use mix of black, white and natural while nothing ground breaking the effect is well constructed while other shades added are definitely noteworthy.

  • Damien Hirst ‘Beautiful Inside My Head Forever’ Auction

Most definitely not the first time we have mention Damien Hirst “Beautiful Inside My Head Forever”, although as this fascinating event beckons at Sotheby’s London the 15th and 16th of September I wanted to look a bit deeper into the auction of one of the world’s highest paid living artist’s. There will be 223 lots up for auction, with more than £65 million expected to be raised from the sale. They are new works by the artist, mostly from 2007 and 2008. There are works from many period’s of Hirt’s career as an artist making this in a way a ‘retrospective’ auction, although the pieces were constructed in the last two years.

Damien Hirst says “After the success of the Pharmacy auction, I always felt I would like to do another auction. It’s a very democratic way to sell art and it feels like a natural evolution for contemporary art. Although there is risk involved, I embrace the challenge of selling my work in this way. I never want to stop working with my galleries. This is different. The world’s changing, ultimately I need to see where this road leads.”

Four of the works to be sold will benefit four charities chosen by Damien Hirst. The Demelza, Hospice Care for Children, Survival International, Strummerville and Kids Company will each have a Hirst work sold for their cause, with each of the works estimated to reach £400,000-600,000. The very successful RED auction that Hirst and Bono (U2) organized earlier this year has made a philanthropist out of the wealthy YBA.

Thanks to the Art News Blog here are some of the Damien Hirst lots that will go up for auction next month. The catalogue for the Beautiful Inside My Head Forever auction is now up online at Sotheby’s.

  • Wood Wood Fall/Winter 2008 Collection

Wood Wood continue to evolve on there aesthetic, continuing to sit somewhere between streetwear and fashion although I might add this new collection definitely sways more towards the latter. Combining some great shades like pale blues and greens with some interesting cuts especially with there pants from more tapered and wider leg fits to the more tradition slimmer fit. Personally a big fan of the green denim seen above while the plaid shirts are on right on track. Doing big things in Denmark, having just mentioned them below while talking about Scandinavian labels, Wood Wood offer another collection to look forward to.

  • Darkening by Randall J. Lane

Darkening is a new zine from Randall J. Lane featuring some drawings, doodles, and photographs. The following is taken from Ghava Press, and the zine can be purchased through them.

“Darkening is an attempt at a return to immediacy. After many years obsessing about and carefully laying out pages for book projects as well as over thinking client driven work, Randall Lane felt an urge to create something with as little second guessing and editing as possible. To use a beloved old school independent publishing platform, the zine, as the outlet for some random photographs and doodles.”

Illustrator extraordinaire, Parra, has linked up with Enjoi Skateboards to release a series of 5 skateboard decks featuring the artist’s distinct style and flavor. Parra’s work is extremely recognizable for his use of color, his charatcters, and his quirky and humorous quotes that adorn his work. The man has been known to lend a helping hand here and there for past collaborative ventures, so it is really cool to see him get together with Enjoi to get these decks going.

  • Won Hundred Spring/Summer 2009

Won Hundred have quickly become a favourite of mine, their latest collection entitled ‘Love, Hate and Everything in Between’ for Spring/Summer 09, sees the Copenhagen based brand take inspiration from David Lynch and Jean Michel Basquiat and their “casual approach to the finer things in life”. The collection looks extremely well tailored and made of hard wearing materials, and in keeping with the slim wearable lines of Won Hundred.
