His works radiate color and life so much that his subjects almost seem real and his technique is flawless. Kent’s work has been exhibited in The Duke Museum of Art and Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. Be sure to take a look at Kent Williams other work here. This Solo Show is quite impressive in person so If you are in Los Angeles go and take a look at it before it’s taken down.

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Cat Power, Spiritualized live at Hollywood Bowl
September 19th 08, 16:10
A couple of nights ago we went to Hollywood Bowl to see Nick Cave perform, opened by Cat Power and Spiritualized. It was a fantastic show! Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds were absolute mad raw power performers. He now plays guitar in addition to piano. He played a lot of good old songs, such as my all time favorite “Stagger Lee” and some new ones from “Dig, Lazarus, Dig” record. Nick was running around the stage like a maniac, throwing music sheets at the crowd ( sheets were later retrieved by the roadies) The band was very tight and sounded excellent. Chan Marshall, a.k.a. Cat Power was a treat. She sang mostly cover songs of her last record and even went into the crowd. Her voice is just magic. Spiritualized was boring and uninspired, not much else to say about his performance. Below are some iPhone photos ( i forgot my camera) and Youtube videos.

“The Argentine” Lagerfeld and Film Comment
September 17th 08, 1:05
I had a wonderful conversation with my good friend Ian Astbury about art, music, life and film earlier today before he left to London to perform with UNKLE live at “Matter” on September 19th. As a special treat Ian will be performing “When Things Explode” from “War Stories” for the first time ever… Part of what we talked about was what inspires us. So here Ian’s list inspirations at the moment:
“The Argentine” ,”Guerrilla” aka “Che” film by Steven Soderbergh and Benicio Del Toro as “Che” See the trailer bellow:
Carl Lagerfeld “Confidential” See the Trailer bellow. Now on DVD.
“Film Comment” Magazine September issue featuring the extensive look at “Che” on the news stands now or read the feature online here.
Oh and I’ve got a hunch that 2009 will be the year of Che…

The Fall
September 15th 08, 13:28
“The Fall” is the second film by acclaimed director Tarsem Singh whom you might remember from the visualy cinematic masterpiece “The Cell” (minus horrendous casting choice for the lead – Jennifer Lopez but an excellent choice of Vincent D’Onofrio. Remember Damien Hirst’s Dissected Horse? one of the best scenes in The Cell See it here ) “The Fall” took 4 years to make, it was filmed in 18 different countries on 26 locations, had no CG effect all you see is real to the fault. ”The Fall” is an incredible visual experience and the story does not disappoint. I’d compare The Fall’s tone and fell to Pasolini’s theatricals and surrealism. Check out some clips from “The Fall” bellow and be sure to pick it up on Bluray and DVD now.

Sigur Ros: censored by the US and fined by the Russians
September 13th 08, 17:55
On the day the Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev, said to the West, “We are not afraid of anything, including the prospect of a new cold war”, the Icelandic four-piece Sigur Ros took to the stage in St Petersburg. In an austerely beautiful palace of culture, where once the nomenklatura would have greeted the latest grain figures with synchronised clapping, the band’s openly gay, Gormenghastian lead singer, Jonsi Birgisson, stops sawing at his guitar with a cello bow and invites members of the audience to rise from their seats and dance. The suggestion does not go down at all well with the hostile, preperestroika-style security guards. One in particular seems especially irked. When a heartshaped red balloon slips its owner’s grasp and floats serenely up towards the top of the proscenium arch, the crowd watch it with smiles on their faces. He, on the other hand, follows its trajectory with tiny, angry eyes, and shortly afterwards coordinates a show of muscle that forces people back into their seats… read the rest of the article via Times online here and if you haven’t heard Sigur Ros do yourself and buy their records.

Edward Colver at “Reserve”
September 4th 08, 14:09
Last week we stopped by “Reserve” store on Fairfax for the opening of Edward Colver’s small solo show. It was very refreshing to see his photographs ( digital prints in this case) in person and to meet Edward. Even thou there was no new work shown, the photos from the late 70’s early 80’s LA’s hardcore scene are pretty amazing and hold up quite well today. So much history!
