I often get asked what made Beijing a better cultural place than Shanghai. These two cities have always been rivalry to each other, a bit like New York and LA. I’m Cantonese so I consider myself hold a fair opinion, other than the vibrant contemporary art scene, Beijing has the most exciting underground music scene in China. That doesn’t mean no one else in other cities are making underground music, it just not yet a “scene”.

My favorite Chinese rock band has gain international and mainstream fame for the last two year. New Pants with lead singer Peng Lei, signed by the biggest China indie label Modern Sky in 1997.
