Behind photographs began as the personal quest of photographer Tim Mantoani to document and preserve noted photographers together with their images. “We have come to a point in history where we are losing both photographic recording mediums and iconic photographers,” Mantoani comments. “While many people are familiar with iconic photographs, the general public has no idea of who created them. This book became a means to do that, the photographer and their photograph in one image.”

London based Martine Rose presents her latest collection from the self-titled line this Spring/Summer 2012 season. The brand’s seventh collection draws inspiration from the 70’s skate scene, revisiting the legendary Dogtown and Z Boys documentary as well as looking at cultural icons from the era like the iconic Zephr team and Kurt Cobain. The fact that Cobain could be seen in dresses and skirts led to Rose’s fabric and silhouette experimentation in the new menswear collection, resulting in fashion forward pieces that still carry a masculine touch. Be sure to check out the full collection and this special short film by Hidden Agency about an imaginary skater who embodies the rebellion, vulnerability, and creativity that was central to Rose’s inspiration and collection.

Similar to the Gucci book by Rizzoli, luxery leather manufacturer, Louis Vuitton is geared to release a book by Rizzoli as well. Focusing on customers’ in-store experience, the book will showcase the most memorable Louis Vuitton retail spaces with the provisions of never before seen sketches, blueprints, and mock-ups. With the growing popularity of online stores and virtual shopping, people are starting to lose the appreciation of the physical storefront, and LV is assisting in helping today’s consumer regain it. The 304-page book is to be publish this Fall, and features insights from some of Louis Vuitton’s architectures such as Peter Marino, Christian de Portzamparc, and Jun Aoki. With standard versions costing around $85, there will also be a limited edition version with three photographs on the cover, matched with three monogrammed fabric slipcases in gold, silver and copper, retailing for $130. All versions of the book will be released October 1st at Louis Vuitton retail locations and specialty book stores.

Ever since Richard Donner’s Superman hit the big screen in 1978, Hollywood has been trying to find the perfect formula for a comic book based money making franchise. As they scoured comics books for workable characters and plots, Hollywood found itself stumbling more than soaring to the top of the box office. Why? Because once a movie became a hit, they lost focus. No longer was retaining the spirit of the characters a key factor anymore, it all came down to the bottom line: money.

Batman, under the direction of Tim Burton, started off as a great success. But as soon as Warner Bros. looked to make it more “mainstream” under the guidance of Joel Schumacher, it became a joke and ranked as one of the worst superhero films of all time (Batman &Robin). Daredevil starring Ben Affleck wasn’t super painful to watch, but the Elektra spin off with Jennifer Garner was ulcer inducing. The Hulk starring Eric Bana and directed by Ang Lee, and The Incredible Hulk starring Edward Norton and directed by Louis Leterrier (who also made Transporter 1 & 2 and shitty Clash of the Titans re-do) were disasters. Ghostrider couldn’t be salvaged even with the help of Nicholas Cage’s impressive hairpiece. Thomas Jane’s eyebrows made me lose my focus in The Punisher. X-Men was serious miscast (Wolverine is 5′3″). The Wolverine spin-off added insult to injury, WTF. And The Fantastic Four only made think of antonyms for the word “fantastic.”

Newer versions were better. Like Batman, Spiderman and Iron Man started off strong. Spiderman’s allure was aided in large part by Willem Dafoe’s performance as the Green Goblin, because Tobey Maguire has no real allure. And Iron Man 1 was a good story with comic relief, while Iron Man 2 turned into a cheese fest and just another Hollywood vehicle for more spin-offs like the Avengers movie.

The reboots of both Superman and Batman saw a resurgence of interest in comic book influenced films due to Christopher Nolan and the bar he set in regards to character growth and development. Let’s see what kind of heat he’ll bring in 2012 with The Dark Knight Rises.

2o11 has seen Thor (better in 2D, thank you Kenneth Branagh)and X-Men First Class (January Jones should have been a mute mutant) take charge of the box offices with Captain America and the Green Lantern still to come. And with the latter opening in theaters this weekend, one can only hope that Ryan Reynolds’ Hal Jordan is worthy of the Green Lantern’s power…

And if he isn’t, don’t worry because the book “Constructing Green Lantern: From Page to Screen” by Ozzy Inguanzo (Universe) definitely is. Everything from story line to set design, to figuring out the right hairdo for Mark Strong aka Sinestro and constructing Peter Sarsgaard’s big fat head, is all nerdily broken down and all laid out for you to enjoy by Inguanzo, the movie’s researcher and film’s resident expert on comic books and conceptual artwork produced from the film.

And for those looking to impress other comic book geeks this weekend, the book has a breakdown of all the movie’s “other” Green Lanterns. But if you get punched in the face for saying “No you idiot, everyone knows that’s Galius Zed, not Naut Kei Loi.” it’s your own damn fault.

Get ready to recite the oath this Friday:

“…and I shall shed my light over dark evil. For the dark things cannot stand the light, The light of the Green Lantern!” – Alan Scott (original)

“In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil’s might beware my power, Green Lantern’s LIGHT!”. “- Hal Jordan (revised, with a more sing song approach)

*Thanks Brisa and Rizzoli/Universe for the great book!

The Human Centipede 2 which is the sequel to Tom Six’s first unexpected success has been “banned” by the The British Board of Film Classification, being refused even an 18+ certificate. The BBFC saying “This new work…tells the story of a man who becomes sexually obsessed with a DVD recording of the first film and who imagines putting the ‘centipede’ idea into practice. Unlike the first film, the sequel presents graphic images of sexual violence, forced defecation, and mutilation, and the viewer is invited to witness events from the perspective of the protagonist. The OPA prohibits the publication of works that have a tendency to deprave or corrupt a significant proportion of those likely to see them.” The makers of the film will have 6 weeks to appeal the decision.

Beats, Rhymes and Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest” is a documentary film directed by Michael Rapaport about one of the most influential and groundbreaking musical groups in hip-hop history. Having released five gold and platinum selling albums within eight years, A Tribe Called Quest has been one of the most commercially successful and artistically significant musical groups in recent history, and regarded as iconic pioneers of hip hop. The band’s sudden break-up in 1998 shocked the industry and saddened the scores of fans, whose appetite for the group’s innovative musical stylings never seems to diminish.

In addition to chronicling the past, present and uncertain future of the band, the film includes interviews from the Beastie Boys, Kanye West, Pharrell, Mos Def, Santigold, Monie Love, Pete Rock, Large Professor, De La Soul, The Jungle Brothers and Common, all of whom attribute some combination of love, respect, and inspiration drawn from the legacy of A Tribe Called Quest.

The film will be shown in over 20 major US cities, premiering in both New York and Los Angeles July 8th. You can find the full list of dates and locations by checking here.

Want to know Alex Turnbull, International DJ, Martial Artist, former British skateboarding champ and International Stussy Tribe member has been up to??

Read below:

There are few living artists as underappreciated today as Dundee born, William Turnbull. For close to six decades now, he has been creating an artistic body of work, lauded by many of the most artistic minds of the second half of the 20th century — figures such as Eduardo Paolozzi, Mark Rothko, Richard Hamilton, Alberto Giacometti, and Barnett Newman not to mention retrospectives and shows at the Tate, Whitechapel Art Gallery, Serpentine Gallery, Waddington Galleries, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and the Tate Britain’s Duveen Galleries.

As a pioneer of British modernism, Turnbull has aided it’s artistic development over the last 60 years. With a strict adherence to his principles, Turnbull’s work was unique during a period of rampant commercialism in the arts.

Beyond Time, a documentary directed by Alex Turnbull, provides a poignant look at the very private life of the artist as well as an in depth look at one of the least documented periods in art, Post War. For four years, Alex Turnbull and his partner Pete Stern meticulously gathered information, interviewing artists, critics, and curators about Turnbull’s life and work. The end result being a film rich with revealing and fascinating stories about Turnbull and his role in modern art.

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Alex Turnbull (DJ, Former British Skateboarding Champ, Martial Artist, Producer) to talk about this father and his first feature film, which premieres this Saturday at LACMA.

Joy Yoon: Before we get started on your father and the film, could you tell me a bit more about yourself?

Alex Turnbull: Early on I was a British skateboarding champ during the early wave of British skateboarders. But from 1980, I was a punk. My friends and I were the first skate punks, and I was in a band called 23 Skidoo. My background is mainly music. We were quite an avant-garde influential music group. We pioneered a lot of the use of cassette looping before sampling with old Sony Walkmans, very influenced by William Burroughs. This was prior to the whole commercialism to music. Commercialism was a dirty word for us.

At first we used conventional instruments and were press darlings, but we did everything to confound that. Shaved our heads, wouldn’t play our albums at the gigs, confounding everyone’s expectations of what the music/ audience relationship was. Every now and then people come back to us, but experimental now is nothing what it was like back then. We used imagery and projections on ourselves, no gaps between songs, we didn’t really care of people liked it or not. It was more about challenging people’s expectations. Now where we’re its only about satisfying the audience.

The video below was filmed back in 1986 on a round trip through the USA and Canada that started in NYC. It provides us with a glimpse into the classic New York subway some 25 years ago which is still so releant to many of us. Filmed on a ARRIflex 16mm camera and originally edited to the song “9am at a New York subway” by band “London Beat” back in 1986 but because of copyright when uploading to youtube recently the director has presented a silent 10 minute film.
